Jean Fugett’s Week 13 NFL Recap

Jean Fugett’s Week 13 NFL Recap

By Jean Fugett; thanks to Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

WalterFootball.com is proud to partner with former Redskins and Cowboys tight end Jean Fugett, Jr. Esq. Fugett grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and attended Amherst College. He was the last pick of the 13th round in the 1972 NFL Draft. Fugett made the Cowboys as a backup to future Hall of Famer Mike Ditka. Fugett eventually became a starter for Tom Landry’s Cowboys and started in Super Bowl X. He made the Pro Bowl in 1977.

As a free agent, Fugett went from being the lowest-paid starting tight end to the highest-paid with the Washington Redskins. While playing for legendary Redskins coach George Allen, Fugett attended law school at George Washington University at night.

During and after his playing days, Fugett worked with CBS, the Washington Post and other media. He went on to serve as Director and Vice-Chair of the McCall Pattern Company Management Committee, founded a Baltimore law firm and partnered with Fanfone in Europe.

After the death of his brother Reginald F. Lewis in 1993, Fugett took over TLC Beatrice International Foods, the largest black-owned and black-managed business in the world at the time. Fugett has served on committees with the NFL Players Association and on the Leadership Council for the American Diabetes Association Maryland Chapter.

WalterFootball.com would like to thank Redskins general manager Bruce Allen and senior vice president/executive producer of media Larry Michael for connecting us to Fugett. Now, let’s let Jean take over.

Week 14 NFL Picks

Texans at Jaguars (Jaguars +3) The Texans better by 10 not by three.

Chiefs at Redskins (Redskins +3.5) The playoff team wins here. Kansas City and the former Eagles coach.

Vikings at Ravens (Ravens -7) The Ravens will roll at home as the Vikings will have no answers.

Browns at Patriots (no line) This is a tune up for the Brady Bunch. The Patriots will win easily.

Raiders at Jets (Jets -2.5) The Raiders love playing in NY and chasing quarterbacks. Raiders.

Colts at Bengals (Bengals -6) The Colts can score on Bengals – and will. The Colts win.

Lions at Eagles (Eagles -2.5) The Lions will outscore the Eagles in a track meet.

Dolphins at Steelers (Steelers -3) Mike Wallace returns triumphant in Pittsburgh.

Bills at Bucs (+2.5) The Bills beat the Bucs because the Bucs will find a way to lose.

Falcons at Packers (no line) The Falcons will fight, but it’ll be too cold outside for the birds. The Pack is back!

Titans at Broncos (Titans +12) This is a nice tune up game for Peyton Manning. The Broncos will ride high.

Rams at Cardinals (Rams +6) The Cardinals are desperate; do they deal or fold? They deal at home.

Giants at Chargers (Giants +3) The Giants have peaked and can’t cover Danny Woodhead.

Seahawks at 49ers (49ers -3) The 49ers back their smack and win in a beat down at home.

Week 13 NFL Recap

The Mike Tomlin controversy is interesting. I occasionally do a public-affairs talk show in Baltimore called Square Off. Last week, all we talked about how the Ravens’ Jacoby Jones had to avoid the coach as he stepped on the field. Tomlin calls this a blunder – taking full responsibility – and now $100,000 poorer, he continues as a member of the NFL Rules Committee.

Professor Vatz from Towson University was also on the show and talked about how “cheating” or rule breaking is a part of the game. Of course, I quickly commented “if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying!” (www.squareoff.net to see the program)

Did Tomlin do it on purpose people still ask? Was it cheating? My answer is no. He was participating in the game. Anything a team can do that is regulated by the officials is part of the game, so competing is not necessarily cheating – although it can be. Regulation by officials and the league on appeal is part of the game. Charlie can tell you readers about Bucs players talking about Sean Payton’s trash talk during the games and how that is part of the Saints’ gamesmanship. Like Jason Kidd, I expected Tomlin to have to pay a fine.

This is why we need drone officiating with someone up in the booth. Have you noticed how arbitrary it is with the spotting of the ball? Is it the front foot or the back foot? The official error in last week’s Redskins-Giants game had two officials signaling two different things with one signaling first down.

Former Redskin and Cowboy tight end Jean Fugett was a Pro Bowler in 1977 and a starter in Super Bowl X.

AFC

The final wild card team in the AFC could be a 9-7 team. The Ravens have the tie-breaker on the Dolphins after beating them in Miami. Head-to-head is the No. 1 tie-breaker should there be a tie. In the AFC, Oakland is eliminated, but the Chargers, Jets, Steelers and Titans are still alive, but one of them will have to get to 9-7. They all are 5-7 right now. We could come down to tie-breakers determining which 9-7 team goes to the playoffs.

The teams that have division leads are not in elimination games right now. It is almost like they have byes, but for the teams with seven losses, every week is an elimination game from here on out.

The sweep of Kansas City puts Denver in control in the West.

NFC

I have become a Nick Foles fan, which is hard for me after making a former career out of beating the Eagles. I was wondering what they were going to be like under Chip Kelly and that got dramatic. Who would have expected this with how they started against the Redskins with so much promise only to fizzle after Week 1, but now they are back and almost on fire with a quarterback that maybe only WalterFootball.com knew about.

The problem that the Cowboys have is their history and the pressure that comes with it. I was part of that string where Tom Landry took eight straight teams to the playoffs, and we were a very good team that was favored in most games and expected to win to quality for the playoffs and go deep in the playoffs. When you wear the Cowboys uniform and do not go deep into the playoffs, the season is a failure. If you did not play on a Roger Staubach team or on a Troy Aikman team, were you really a Dallas Cowboy? That sentiment is cruel and mean. Dallas had some great players who never played in the Super Bowl, but most of us did, and when we think of the Cowboys, those are the teams we think most about.

There is enormous pressure on Jason Garrett. There is still a lot of pressure on him even though Jerry Jones said he would be back; there is a ton of pressure on Tony Romo, too. It was good to see the Cowboys win on Thanksgiving. Jerry has been tinkering to get it right.

All of that information is biased by the way. Dallas and Philadelphia are tied at 7-5 and are 6-2 in the NFC; however, Dallas has a 4-0 division record to Philadelphia being 3-2. I would say that Dallas is in the driver’s seat.

There is going to be a lot of competition for the wild card. Carolina has three losses and San Francisco has four losses, but Arizona is just behind with five losses. I believe the Cardinals have games against San Francisco. Philadelphia or Dallas could end up not winning the division, but still qualifying.

In the North, there are two teams with six losses behind Detroit.

Carolina has two games against New Orleans, so the Panthers have a chance to surprise. The way Carolina is playing right now, you cannot rule out the possiblity of the Panthers leaping the Saints. Any major injury could change the dynamic, and it is too early to say that New Orleans has the division won.

Good luck this week!
