The Ray Guy Award is given to the best punter in college football. Last year’s winner was Utah punter Tom Hackett.
Ray Guy Award Winner:
JK Scott, Alabama
Scott was superb for Alabama in 2014. The freshman averaged a booming 48 yards per punt with a long of 73 yards. It turned out to be the best season ever for a punter in Crimson Tide history. Scott dropped 56 percent of his punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line (31-for-55). He was a First-Team All-SEC selection and finalist for the Ray Guy Award. It will be interesting to see if Scott can stay consistent. If he does, he should bring home the Ray Guy Award in 2015.
Ray Guy Award Runner-Up:
Austin Rehkow, Idaho
The Ray Guy Award hasn’t shied away from going to lesser-known schools, so Rehkow definitely has a shot at bringing home the hardware. He has been a model of consistency across his two seasons. Rehkow averaged 47.8 yards per punt as a freshman and sophomore. He had long punts of 73 and 65 yards, so he has a powerful leg as well. If Rehkow can continue that level of play, he has the potential to be drafted early for a punter, which you could argue is even being drafted at all. Still, the junior deserves All-American honors if he maintains that level of play in 2015.
Ray Guy Award Dark Horse:
Jaime Keehn, LSU
Keehn had an excellent 2014 season for LSU, averaging 44.9 yards per punt. He had a long of 64 yards. In 2013, Keehn averaged 41 yards, and the year prior, he averaged 43.7 yards. Keehn also has good coverage units at his disposal. Another quality year from him looks very likely, and he definitely looks capable of winning the Ray Guy Award.
Honorable Mentions: Miami’s Justin Vogel, Ohio State’s Cameron Johnston, Ole Miss’ Will Gleeson, Texas A&M’s Drew Kaser, TCU’s Ethan Perry, West Virginia Nick O’Toole, Virginia Tech’s A.J. Hughes, Wisconsin’s Drew Meyer and Kentucky’s Landon Foster.
