Heading into the 2015 college football season, WalterFootball.com will debut our projections for the nation’s leaders during the fall. The All-American teams always have some surprises, and the next fall’s stars could be the headline players next May for the 2016 NFL Draft. We also will project the winners of the postseason awards that are given out to the best of college football.
The Jet Award is given to the best returner in college football. Last year’s winner was Kansas State’s Tyler Lockett.
Jet Award Winner:
Isaiah McKenzie, Georgia As a freshman in 2014, McKenzie was a weapon as a dangerous returner for the Bulldogs. He averaged 11.5 yards per punt return with two touchdowns. He also averaged 28.1 yards per kick return with one touchdown. With Todd Gurley in the NFL, McKenzie should have more kick-return opportunities. The 5-foot-8, 170-pounder is an explosive weapon who could produce a huge year as a returner.
Jet Award Runner-Up:
Jalin Marshall, Ohio State Over the years, Urban Meyer has taken a lot of pride in fielding teams that play excellent special teams. So, it says something that Marshall became the Buckeyes returner as a freshman. He averaged 11.5 yards per punt return with a touchdown. It will be interesting to see if they add kick-return duties for Marshall this year. Marshall (5-11, 205) has the talent to be a dangerous play-maker on special teams.
Jet Award Dark Horse:
Stacy Coley, Miami Coley flashed some big-play ability in 2013. The freshman averaged 18 yards per reception as he hauled in 33 catches for 591 yards with seven touchdowns. Coley also showed big-play potential on special teams. He averaged 26 yards per kick return and 20 yards per punt return, and scored a touchdown on both types of return. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Coley didn’t produce as well as a sophomore, but he’s capable of a big season as a junior.
Honorable Mentions: Washington’s Dante Pettis, North Texas’ Darvin Kidsy, Oklahoma State’s Tyreek Hill, UCLA’s Ishmael Adams and Boise State’s Shane Williams-Rhodes.
