2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Vander Blue


Position: Shooting Guard

Size: 6-4, 200

School: Marquette, Junior


Strengths:

Athleticism

Awesome in transition

Explosive at the rim

Quick first step

Can finish around the bucket with either hand

Rhythm jumper

Pull-up jumper

Improved outside shooter

Doesn’t shy away from the big moment

On-the-ball defender

Active in passing lanes

Weaknesses:

Outside shot still needs work

Too much of a finesse finisher at the rim

Taking care of the ball off the bounce

Needs to get stronger/more physical

Can be a more aggressive rebounder

Summary: Blue’s breakthrough junior year and terrific performance in the NCAA Tournament put him on the radar, but I think he’s making a mistake by going pro. Blue’s growth from sophomore to junior year was impressive, and I think he would have benefited from developing further during his senior year. Blue will likely be an early-mid second-round pick, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he goes undrafted.

Player Comparison: Jared Cunningham. I’m not reaching too far back for this one. Similar in size, Cunningham is a terrific athlete and awesome in transition. Like Blue, Cunningham is not a great outside shooter, which is part of the reason Cunningham barely made a dent on the Dallas roster in his rookie season. He was somehow a first-round pick but I can’t see that happening for Blue.
