2013 NBA Mock Draft: Round 1
2013 NBA Mock Draft
2014 NBA Mock Draft
-
Portland Trail Blazers: Allen Crabbe, G, California – A- Grade
This is a great jump up for the Blazers; they dealt a pair of second-rounders to move up and grab Crabbe with the first pick of the Round 2. Crabbe was a first-round talent in my view and adds more needed bench scoring for Portland. Even though the Blazers already drafted C.J. McCollum in the first round, they are upgrading their bench play. That was a HUGE priority this offseason.

Oklahoma City Thunder: Alex Abrines, G, Spain – B+ Grade
Hey, I actually got a second-round pick right, which is a rarity for mock drafts. Oklahoma City made a smart move with its third pick of the night by selecting a skilled European combo guard who can be an asset for the future. -
Cleveland Cavaliers: Carrick Felix, G, Arizona State – C+ Grade
With four picks in the 2013 NBA Draft, the Cavaliers needed to add talent on the wing and did so with Karasev and Felix. I think there were a few guys available still who are better than Felix, which is why this gets downgraded. -
Houston Rockets: Isaiah Canaan, G, Murray State – B+ Grade
The target with this pick was guard depth, which Canaan certainly provides. He is more of a scoring point guard but was rumored to be moving into the first round, so he is a nice early second-round grab as a potential backup to Jeremy Lin. -
Washington Bullets: Glen Rice, Jr., G, Georgia Tech – A- Grade
The Wizards traded No. 38 and No. 54 to move up three spots and grab Rice, Jr. It makes sense since Washington needs depth in its backcourt behind John Wall and Bradley Beal. Rice Jr. helped his D-League team win the championship so he is considered NBA-ready and might be a role player from the get-go. -
Sacramento Kings: Ray McCallum, G, Detroit – D+ Grade
I’m not that high on McCallum and with the Kings already having Isaiah Thomas and Jimmer Fredette, the point guard position gets crowded. -
Detroit Pistons: Tony Mitchell, F, North Texas – A Grade
This is a terrific second-round value considering Mitchell has elite athleticism and first-round potential. Detroit needs some depth inside, and while Mitchell might need a year or two before he becomes a role player, this pick could pay off down the road. -
Milwaukee Bucks: Nate Wolters, G, South Dakota State – A Grade
With a ton of free agents in the backcourt, the Bucks need depth at guard. Wolters has limitless range from deep and can probably play either guard spot in the NBA. This is a solid value. -
Portland Trail Blazers: Jeff Withey, C, Kansas – A Grade
Hey … I got another second-round pick correct in my mock. Portland is likely losing J.J. Hickson to free agency, so the team needs some size inside. Withey was one of the best shot blockers in college basketball, and at the very worst, he could be a quality backup big man. -
Portland Trail Blazers: Grant Jerrett, F, Arizona – A Grade
Another second-round pick I nailed in my mock … (I’m impressed, and you should be, too.) Jerrett is bound for the D-League for the next two years or so, but is a stretch four who was a top-10 recruit in the 2012 class. Give him some time and this could be a steal. -
Memphis Grizzlies: Jamaal Franklin, G, San Diego State – A Grade
Awesome pick at No. 41. The Grizzlies could be losing Tony Allen to free agency, so they need depth at the two. Considering he was in play in the late teens, this is a terrific value for someone as versatile as Franklin. -
New Orleans Pelicans: Pierre Jackson, G, Baylor – C- Grade
Other people are higher on Jackson than I am. Plus, New Orleans has Greivis Vasquez and just acquired Jrue Holiday, so I’m not sure how Jackson fits on this team as a third point guard. -
Atlanta Hawks: Ricky Ledo, G, Providence – A Grade
Atlanta is heading in a re-building mode, so rolling the dice on a project, but very talented wing is a nice piece to add the puzzle. Ledo could end up one of the second-round steals of th 2013 NBA Draft. -
Atlanta Hawks: Mike Muscala, C, Bucknell – C Grade
Muscala is a face-up big guy and someone I’m not very high on. He adds some versatility to the Hawks’ frontcourt, but I don’t see him ever really being a rotation guy. -
Portland Trail Blazers: Marko Todorovic, F, Montenegro – C Grade
For the Blazers fifth pick of the 2013 NBA Draft, going the foreign route makes a ton of sense. This is a draft-and-stash guy who either potentially contributes in a few years or never steps foot in the NBA. -
Utah Jazz: Erick Green, G, Virginia Tech – B Grade
The Nuggets could be losing Andre Iguodala and Corey Brewer to free agency, so the team needs some talent on the wing. My only concern is that Erick Green is more of a combo guard, though he certainly can score the basketball. -
Atlanta Hawks: Raul Neto, G, Brazil – C Grade
A second foreign point guard for the Hawks? I guess …. He’ll stay overseas and maybe come to the association some day. -
Los Angeles Lakers: Ryan Kelly, F, Duke – C Grade
Dwight Howard’s replacement! I kid, I kid. Kelly is a stretch four and the Lakers don’t really have a frontcourt player with his ability to stretch defenses. I just think he’s too thin and not athletic enough to be a rotation player in the NBA. -
Chicago Bulls: Erik Murphy, F, Florida – B Grade
The Bulls lack a true stretch four who can knock down 3-pointers, which Murphy certainly can do. Imagine Derrick Rose driving and kicking to an open Murphy for three … could be a nice fit. -
Miami Heat: James Ennis, F, Long Beach State – C Grade
Miami acquired this pick from Atlanta. Ennis does bring some athleticism to the floor, which the Heat doesn’t have a ton of off the bench with guys like Ray Allen and Mike Miller, so Ennis could stick on the roster. -
Orlando Magic: Romero Osby, F, Oklahoma – D Grade
Osby is an undersized, but physical, energy player who brings some toughness to the floor. Still, he probably doesn’t stick in the league. -
Minnesota Timberwolves: Lorenzo Brown, G, N.C. State –
I like this from a value standpoint since Brown has good size and the ability to create. He can’t shoot the ball worth a lick though and Minnesota needs shooters, not another point guard. This was worth the pick though at this point. -
Boston Celtics: Colton Iverson, C, Colorado State – D Grade
The Celtics need a true big man, but with Fab Melo, Kelly Olynyk, Reggie Evans, Kris Humphries, Jared Sullinger, Brandon Bass all going to be on the roster next season, where does Iverson fit in? -
Philadelphia 76ers: Arselan Kazemi, PF, Oregon – D Grade
Kazemi is undersized, but plays hard and rebounds the ball well. That might allow him to stick in the league, though I doubt it. -
Memphis Grizzlies: Joffrey Lauvergne, F, France – C Grade
The Grizzlies have three second-round picks, so I figured they would select at least one draft-and-stash guy. -
Detroit Pistons: Peyton Siva, G, Louisville – C+ Grade
The Pistons didn’t grab a point guard with one of their first two picks, so this selection makes sense. Siva’s size is a concern, but he is a terrific leader and defender, which might earn him a roster spot. -
Phoenix Suns: Alex Oriakhi, PF, Missouri – D- Grade
Oriakhi’s got the size and strength for the NBA, but failed to be a consistent contributor in college. I don’t see how he fits on a Suns team with the Morris twins and Luis Scola already at power forward. -
San Antonio Spurs: Deshaun Thomas, F, Ohio State – A- Grade
I know the dude doesn’t defend and isn’t a great athlete all, but he can score the basketball from just about anywhere. Thomas is a great get for a Spurs team that knows how to develop role players. -
Minnesota Timberwolves: Bojan Dubljvic, F, Serbia – C Grade
With four picks in the 2013 NBA Draft, a foreign player was inevitable for the Timberwolves. -
Memphis Grizzlies: Janis Timmas, SG, Latvia – C Grade
I mean, sure … I pretty much give any second-round international prospect a “C” because he more than likely won’t ever play in the NBA.
