David Kay’s 2017 NBA Mock Draft

Past Mocks From David Kay
2016 NBA Mock Draft
2015 NBA Mock Draft
Updated: Jan. 19, 2017.

  1. Philadelphia 76ers: Alec Peters, F, Valparaiso.
Alec Peters is one of the best scorers in the 2017 NBA Draft regardless of size, but he can play the three and four, is a strong shooter and rebounds like a true big man. He will be a shooting/scoring four in the NBA and the 76ers only have one, expensive veteran Ersan Ilyasova, who isn’t in the team’s core.

  2. Atlanta Hawks (From Nets): Josh Hart, SG, Villanova.
Josh Hart could win the Naismith Award this season as the best player in the country, but like Grayson Allen, he isn’t considered among the elite prospects in the 2017 NBA Draft. In the second round, Hart is a steal, as he is a 20-point scorer, an elite rebounder for a shooting guard, a play-maker and an ace shooter. The Hawks may be rebuilding, so they will need to collect talent and Hart to me is a lottery prospect.

  3. Phoenix Suns: Jaron Blossomgame, SF, Clemson.
The Suns here should just take the best player who fits, and that is probably Jaron Blossomgame, who is one of the best players in the country. The senior is having an off shooting-season, but he is an excellent athlete, an efficient scorer, a strong rebounder and has big-time block numbers for a small forward. He could be a three-and-D guy in the NBA with added scoring to give his team.

  4. Boston Celtics (From Timberwolves): Justin Jackson, SF, North Carolina.
Justin Jackson is one of the best players in college, but playing on a ridiculously deep North Carolina team means he doesn’t have the numbers he would on almost any team in the nation. He’s a scorer, a shooter and a play-maker who could become a nice piece for the Celtics.

  5. Memphis Grizzlies (From Heat): V.J. Beachem, SF, Notre Dame.
Beachem is a veteran shooter and scorer, and with Vince Carter 40, the Grizzlies could need another shooter off the bench.

  6. Los Angeles Lakers: Nigel Hayes, F, Wisconsin.
Nigel Hayes is a veteran athletic combo forward who is one of the most versatile players in the country and is made to be an NBA role player. The Lakers could really use him, and Luol Deng could teach him so much.

  7. Dallas Mavericks: John Collins, PF, Wake Forest.
Collins is a tall, athletic big man who can score, rebound and block shots. His physical gifts are enticing, plus the Mavericks could use some young talent with size.

  8. Houston Rockets (From Nuggets): Jalen Brunson, PG, Villanova.
Brunson is a strong scorer and an elite shooter who can run an offense, and he would pair with James Harden very well when he comes off the bench.

  9. Utah Jazz (From Knicks): Carlton Bragg, PF, Kansas.
Bragg is a classic athletic big man who rebounds, blocks shots and can’t shoot, but he can be a monster off the bench. This is a value pick for the Jazz, as they have a lot of picks and no needs.

  10. Sacramento Kings: Devonte Graham, G, Kansas.
The Kings are desperate for talent, mostly at guard. Devonte Graham is a shooter and play-making guard who should be a big-time role player in the NBA. He may not be a starter, but if they actually find a starting point guard, he would be a nice second-unit point.

  11. Philadelphia 76ers: Cameron Oliver, PF, Nevada.
Cameron Oliver is a shooting and scoring power forward who distributes and is one of the best shot-blockers in the country. The Magic don’t need more size, but the value is just too solid and they have free agent decisions to make.

  12. Utah Jazz (From Pistons): Dwayne Bacon, G, Florida State.
The Jazz have a lot of veterans at guard, so they could use a young scorer like Dwayne Bacon off their bench. He was once considered an elite prospect, so this is is a bargain.

  13. Minnesota Timberwolves (From Pelicans): Ike Anigbogu, C, UCLA.
Anibobu is one of the biggest and strongest players in the 2017 NBA Draft with athleticism and ridiculous shot-blocking and rebounding skill. The Timberwolves don’t need him, but the value is excellent.

  14. Washington Wizard: Monte Morris, PG, Iowa State.
Monte Morris is the most efficient point guard in the country, an elite play-maker, an efficient shooter and scorer, plus he rebounds well for his size. Washington needs some depth at guard and Morris fits. I guarantee he will have a lengthier career than at least half the lottery picks, although he may not be a starter in the NBA.

  15. Indiana Pacers: Jonathan Motley, PF, Baylor.
A very solid shooting big man and rebounder, the Baylor big should be a very nice role player and fits the Pacers’ shooting and offensive style well. They really need some size on their roster.

  16. Charlotte Hornets: Malik Pope, F, San Diego State.
Malik Pope has been a scout’s favorite for three years now, as he has the athleticism and size of a star, but the game of your neighbor. His physical talents, however, are so enticing that some team will draft him, and the Hornets love size, athleticism and defense so he fits.

  17. New York Knicks (From Bulls): Isaac Haas, C, Purdue.
One of the biggest players in the 2017 NBA Draft, Haas is a big scorer as well as a capable rebounder and shot-blocker who has what it takes to be a strong second-unit center in this league. Center isn’t their biggest need, but Round 2 of the 2017 NBA Draft is about taking talent and he is a big-time talent; pun much intended.

  18. Houston Rockets (From Blazers): Edmond Sumner, PG, Xavier.
This is just a value selection for the Rockets, as I already have them drafting Jalen Brunson. Sumner has the size and athletic talent to play the two, so he fits as a scorer and distributor.

  19. Atlanta Hawks: Kostja Mushidi, SG, Belgium.
An athletic scorer who needs to develop a jump shot, Mushidi’s physical gifts and talent at scoring the ball make him a nice gamble in the second round for the Hawks as they need to add more young talent.

  20. Milwaukee Bucks: Malcolm Hill, SF, Illinois.
Malcolm Hill is one of the Big Ten’s best scorers, and the Bucks, who are improving into one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, could use a scoring punch off the bench. They are starting Tony Snell, which means they really need some perimeter talent.

  21. Utah Jazz: Rodions Kurucs, SF, Latvia.
The Jazz have a ton of second-round picks, so getting at multiple international players is likely.

  22. Oklahoma City Thunder: Joel Berry, PG, North Carolina.
The Thunder have a rather mediocre bench, and Joel Berry is going to be a very talented second-unit point guard. He is a strong shooter and scorer, plus runs one of the best offenses in the country while getting a ton of steals. If he was bigger, he would probably be a first-round pick, so he is a solid value selection.

  23. Oklahoma City Thunder: Melo Trimble, G, Maryland.
Melo Trimble may lack starting point guard skills, but he is a very talented shooter and scorer who can be an NBA sixth man. I like him a lot more than some scouts, and as the Thunder need scoring and guard depth on the bench, Trimble is a very nice selection. I don’t care if they just drafted Joel Berry, as both are different as players.

  24. Brooklyn Nets: Alpha Kaba, PF, France.
A big four with defensive skills, athleticism and strong rebounding, Alpha Kaba has been in draft talk for years and is still just 20, so he has time to develop his game. He would be another very nice prospect for a Nets team that has a solid stable of young talent.

  25. Boston Celtics (From Clippers): Mikal Bridges, SF, Villanova.
Mikal Bridges is an athletic three-and-D youngster who is having a nice sophomore season for the defending champions. I have at least four Villanova players in this mock, and I would love to see what Bridges could do in a bigger role as a junior. Regardless, the Celtics have no needs and Bridges would be another very nice prospect.

  26. Toronto Raptors: Chris Boucher, PF, Oregon.
A team with no needs, Toronto would be smart to pick a versatile big man. Boucher is one of the 2017 NBA Draft’s best shot-blockers, is athletic and can hit threes, making him a valuable asset, but his slim body is a big problem and he will get bullied.

  27. New York Knicks (From Houston): Tyler Dorsey, G, Oregon.
Tyler Dorsey is no point guard, but he is a strong and efficient scorer who is also a big-time shooter who defends. The Knicks need depth at guard, so Dorsey would be a nice selection.

  28. Boston Celtics (From Cavaliers): Justin Patton, C, Creighton.
Some have Patton in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft, and maybe I will in a bit, but he is very skinny for a center, and although he is productive, I’d like to see more. The Celtics could use more size, however, so he fits.

  29. Utah Jazz (from Warriors): Zach Collins, C, Gonzaga.
Collins is a 7-footer with big-time scoring ability and is a strong three-point shooter. The Jazz don’t need him, but they wouldn’t say no to talent like him Round 2 of the 2017 NBA Draft. He will likely make the first round at some point in my mock drafts going forward.

  30. San Antonio Spurs: Kris Jenkins, G/F, Villanova.
Jenkins is a three-point specialist – one of the best in the 2017 NBA Draft – and the Spurs love shooters and winners, making him a nice fit for Gregg Popovich.
