2011 NFL Draft Mailbag

NFL Draft Mailbag Notes: These are not actually e-mails. They are comments left on the comment board in my 2011 NFL Mock Draft. I've included some of these comments and my responses to them.

2011 NFL Draft E-mails - Crackhead Mail

  • From Ark:

heres the top ten Top ten 2011 1 Carolina - Dareous 2 Denver - Petersen 3 Buffalo

    --> I think I speak for everyone when I say that's one hell of a top 10.

  • From Tbone:

top ten mistakes in your draft 1 chris culiver at 198 how about gone at 94 2 denarius moore at 194 how about gone at 159 3 chimdi chekwa at 162 how about gone at 74 4 shareece wright at 146 how about gone at 94 5 joe lefeged at 142 how about gone at 124 6 niles paul at 131 how about gone at 94 7 kenrick ellis at 126 how about gone at 74 8 dontay moch at 96 how about gone at 74 9 demarco murray at 96 how about gone at 74 10 ras i dowling at 81 how about gone at 60

--> You have four players "gone at 74" - Chimdi Chekwa, Kenrick Ellis, Dontay Moch and DeMarco Murray. Naturally, the Patriots are drafting at No. 74, so Bill Belichick must be using one hell of a camcorder to get all of those guys on his team.

  • From 1788:

Dude your round 6 sucks!!!! Same for your OG rankings. UNLV guard Matt Murphy had an awesome pro day!! Do some research!!!!!!!

--> Well, at least my Rounds 1-5 don't suck.

And who the hell is Matt Murphy? I took your advice and did some research. CBS ranks Murphy as the 630th best player in this class. ESPN doesn't rank him at all. So there you go. I did some research!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • From SheepHearder:

Baaaaaaaa. Keep on following Walt! And by that I mean keep up the good work of your cut-n-paste mocks! Isn't it nice to have a subscription to "IN" on Makes your "job" a whole lot easier, huh?!

--> What the hell is a "sheep hearder?" And for someone who makes fun of ESPN constantly, I'm very disgruntled that someone thinks I "cut-n-paste" from their site.

  • From John:

the charges are going to draft julio jones.there not going for wilkerson.wilkerson will come in the second round.thats my opinion.

--> What? How the hell are the "Charges" going to get Julio Jones? And saying "Wilkerson will come in the second round" sounds kinda dirty.

  • From Nunua:

what are u talking about with the jags?

--> Weh? What are you talking about about talking about with the Jags? Ouch, I just made my head hurt.

  • From TT:

Could you possibly hate on the Titans any more than you do in this mock draft? Each of the first three picks, you mention something about how they don't care about character, if anybody will take this guy the Titans will, they don't care about the major red flags, etc. I just think you're being ignorant in acting like the Titans are the only team that has taken risks on players in the past. At the end of the day, talent trumps character the majority of the time. This strategy backfires sometimes, (see Talib from the Bucs getting arrested this week. Why no Buc hate?) but to act like Tennessee is the only team that is ever willing to take these risks is beyond narrow minded.

--> Umm... here are some write-ups from my Bucs picks:

"One team that will ignore Clayborn's character concerns is Tampa Bay."

"Jabaal Sheard is a late first-round talent, but will probably fall into the middle of Round 2 because of a previous arrest. The Buccaneers, however, have a tendency of looking past these things."

As our good friend 1788 would say, "Do some research!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Walter Footballs mocks are usually pretty good and well reasoned, however you know some team is going to reach for a player or make an unexpected pick. It happens every year. Someone like Locker or Mallet (or even both) could go in the 1st round. When you really need a QB you will reach.

Anyone who thinks Dallas should take anything other than CB (Please God let Prince be available) or OL in the 1st round needs to check themselves in to rehab for a severe crack addiction. The secondary was horrendous and any other year Prince would be the top rated CB in the draft. The DL depth means that in the 2nd and even 3rd round you can get a quality player. Also Rob Ryan's version of the 3-4 isn't built around the ends getting the same kind of pressure that Wade Phillips scheme was. Im hopin for Prince in the 1st and OL in the 2nd. Keep up the good work.

Personally speaking, this mock is pretty fullproof. These people who hate only do so because their favorite player isn't as high as they desire, but if they looked at each teams individual needs and were able to even grasp the vague concept of professional football, they would understand how reliable your mocks are. I always look forward to reading the updates everyweek and believe that you only continue to prove your credibility. I "vist" oh wait, I visit this site every week and hope to see myself on it in two years.

ryan mallett is the best qb in this draft hands down. mallett scored 26 on the wonderlic, where u predicted he would be in single digits. i think mallett will be drafted by one of the top 10 teams. a lot of the so-called experts are saying that mallett is moving back into the top 10. I think mallett will be the 3rd qb taken in the first round. here is the order in which i think the qb will be drafted gabbert, newton, mallett, locker, ponder and the qb from nevada. because of the nfl labor issues, i think there will be 6 qb taken in the first round. the surprise is that most of these qb will be taken by teams that already have veterans qb at the helm of the offense, therefore, some of these qb will be able to sit and learn before being thrown to the wolves, which will benefit those teams in the long run in terms of making the playoffs and winning super bowls.

You are telling me Russell Okung had a better year than Trent Williams? That was absurd you got to be kidding. Do you have any statistical breakdown for this assumption? Russell Okung was brittle most of the year and finally started getting healthy at the end of the year, he is not a knee bender, and he is stiff in his stance. Trent Williams had a pretty good year even on a horrible, dysfunctional o-line. He faced Dware, Tcole, Jtuck, and Osi 2x per, then Cmathews, Mario Williams, Julius Peppers, Jared Allen, and Dwight Freeney. Faired pretty well against them. So before you throw that absurd statement about Okung having a better year than The Silverback please get your fact straight, if you want to be taken seriously as a journalists/blogger.

So, now that Ryan Mallett has actually scored a 26 on the Wonderlic, when you were predicting single digits, will you admit that maybe you were wrong? Also, what do you think about Carolina inviting Mallett for a private workout? They don't have a second round pick in the draft, so are they possibly...oh no...considering him number one!? Oh, wouldn't that piss you off! LMAO!

Now, I know you will say something like Carolina expects him to drop to the 3rd round, but you know that's BS. You and all the other media fools and so called experts missed on this one. The bigger man will admit it. What about you?

and by the way, if you ever want to be taken seriously in journalism, I would stop actually answering fan mail with "LOL".

I can't believe you actually do that. I can't imagine Chris Low from ESPN putting "lulz, jk, rofl" and other crap like that in his blogs.

Oh and I forgot to mention that his team interviews have all gotten rave reviews. He has been respectful and not "defensive" like Newton was accused of being and impressed many coaches with drawing up and dissecting plays on the chalk board. So he's had great interviews with those that it matters to have great interviews with. Also he has never failed a drug test. Ever. He has never ever failed a drug test in his life. But he's an addict right? He had great understanding and control of a pro style offense and can tear apart plays with his knowledge of pro playbooks and scored a 26 on the wonderlic, but he's an idiot, right? I remember a while ago you talked about how incredibly slow his release is. Well it has never been slow, but you compared it to Byron Leftwich. At the combine and pro day, he had one of the faster releases I have seen out of a college quarterback in a while. Sounds like you're running out of garbage to slam him with. Do you think you might consider actually objectively evaluating him now?

So he talks like he's black. Sounds like that is the piece of mud you're left with to smear him for until draft day. I can't wait to hear about how the way he talks is going to keep him out of the first round.

I expect a response to this. Don't be a coward and avoid this message. Don't be a worthless piece of second rate media garbage who, bless your heart, will never have a respected opinion in the world of sports past posting things that are controversial and piss people off. I can't wait for your answer

Okay so it just came out that Mallett scored a 26 on his Wonderlic test.

So I have to ask, have you ever actually done any research on Mallett? I mean I'm serious. In the past I have heard you question his leadership ability. Well Petrino and others came out and said that's ridiculous that that is even being thought about because he was the unquestioned leader of the hogs the last 2 years. You were positive that he would put up a single digit wonderlic score. Well a 26 is more than respectable and I'm going to guess close to double what Cam Newton scored. Drug allegations? Latest news is he has not only passed the drug test at the combine, but he passed numerous other ones while at Arkansas.

The media made his interview at the combine out to be a complete embarrassment to himself. I watched it live and I must say I have no idea how that could have been taken like that. He respectfully answered the same question 4 different times with the same answer of "I'll talk to those who need to know about this" and declined to talk about it. He never got heated or angry and never fired back. Then his agent said that the last question was going to be asked, and when Mallett had answered it, he said bye and and his agent escorted him to the field to do the combine work outs. I don't know how he "bombed" that interview or did anything wrong at all besides not give the answers that the medias whores like yourself were hoping for.

So let's be honest, do you hate Ryan Mallett? I'm not so sure you're not who started the media war against him in the first place and your criticism hasn't just been negative about him. The wording has been straight up mean and inflamatory. So I ask you, why do you hate Ryan Mallett? Literally all of your huge slams on him have been proven wrong over and over. I'm sure you won't change your mind about him, but I just have to ask, what's your problem with him?

    I eagerly await your response

Are you guys mental? I don't understand how anyone can say Okung is better T. Williams. T. Will may have given up more sacks and penalties but his competition was FAAAAAAAAR superior to who Okung had to face (when he could stay healthy). Here are the players both had to face, you tell me which one was worse -- 1) Ahmad Brooks, James Hall x 2, Julius Peppers, Joey Porter, Will Smith, Tamba Hali, Charles Johnson, John Abraham, & Stylez White OR 2) Demarcus Ware x 2, Mario Williams, Clay Matthews, Dwight Freeney, Julius Peppers, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Trent Cole, Jason Babin, Jared Allen, Osi Umenyiora x 2, Stylez White, & Austen Lane. So which one was worse? If you said #2 (which you should this is not even remotely close) then you are giving T Will the nod.

So you can LOL all you want Frank but you're the idiot here. I know "Walter" doesn't have the balls to put this in his next hatemail, but I still think those of who who read the comments should know the truth.

Looking at the numbers between Williams and Okung is one thing, but comparing them to who they faced in competition is another. Williams may have allowed more sacks and had more false starts, but he also faced DeMarcus Ware (x2), Mario Williams, Dwight Freeney, Julius Peppers, Jared Allen, and Osi Umenyiora (x2). Given the competition, Williams' rookie season was FAR better than Okung's. Okung's competition was hardly worth mentioning and he missed 6 games!

I personally agree with most of your reservations regarding Ryan Mallet. Having said that, I cannot see him falling behind Colin at Nevada. Im thinking either 12 to the Vikings or 25 to Seattle.
