2011 NFL Draft E-mails - Random AFC Questions and Comments
From Mike Arr:
Bills draft prediction. They will move down 1 or 2 spots to get more picks, Cam Newton is more of a project than people think + he is a spoiled athlete AND an attitude problem waiting to happen. The Bills have a small but talented group, upon which they need to build. They can ill afford to take a player that is going to sit for 1-3 years. Plus, Fitzy CAN win in this league. Given the opportunity to go to camp as the started + 1 more year in the system can only make him better. Fitzy throws for 30+ TD's next year. Fo Sho !
--> I disagree with everything. First, no team can win consistently with Ryan Fitzpatrick. He's a very good backup in the NFL, but he's nothing more than that.
Second, I don't see why Cam Newton is an "attitude problem waiting to happen." Newton's a great leader. His biggest issue is transitioning to an NFL offense and making multiple reads.
And third, no team's going to trade up to the No. 3 overall pick unless there's a rookie salary scale. No owner wants to pay that much guaranteed money to an unknown commodity.
From Invisibulman:
Go ahead and pencil in Tyler Sash to the Colts in the second round. Bob Sanders was finally released this afternoon. Strong safety just became their #2 need behind left tackle and the Colts do love their Hawkeyes.
--> I like this suggestion. The Colts do have a tendency to draft Iowa players, and strong safety is now a huge need.
From ChiefFan101:
Walt. Last year your #1 pick for the Chiefs was an offensive tackle at #5 and I did agree. So how is it after 8 picks in 2010 for the Chiefs, how's it take 5 picks into the 2011 draft #148 to take an OT?
--> I'm not saying the Chiefs don't need a left tackle. I think they definitely need help there. But Branden Albert is a marginal player, and replacing him with another marginal player (the tackle class is thin after all the first-round guys) doesn't really make much sense to me. If Kansas City loves Anthony Castonzo, Gabe Carimi, etc. enough at No. 21, they should take one of the those players. But I don't think they will.
From Gonzo:
I'm tired of always seeing Mark Ingram in every Mock going to Miami... it's a little boring and I want some diversity... I don't think we'll get him. We're going to trade back, acquire a 2nd-round with a 1st-rounder and get Pouncey in the 1st and get Titus Young in the 2nd. Then Kendall Hunter in 3rd. Casey Matthews in the 4th. Then I don't know anything about players after the 4th round.
--> Sometimes the consensus pick is the one that happens. For instance, everyone mocked Malcolm Jenkins to the Saints two years ago. New Orleans took him at No. 14.
If Mark Ingram is available, the Dolphins will probably select him. If he's off the board, they'll trade down or reach. However, I don't predict trades in my mock drafts, which is why I've frequently mocked Ingram to Miami.
From Abcdefgh:
I like that you have the Steelers taking a DB. ESPN insists that they'll take an OT, but they have a good line, just a lot of injuries. They need help in the defensive backfield so Troy Polamalu doesn't have to take as many guesses.
--> I think there's a good chance the Steelers take a tackle or guard. Willie Colon is a free agent and Max Starks is coming off injury. Derek Sherrod, Ben Ijalana and Mike Pouncey are all viable options at No. 31. But then again, so is a cornerback like Brandon Harris or Aaron Williams.
From Adam:
Why do you give the Steelers an ILB in every mock draft? IN case you don't know, the Steelers found James Farrior's replacement in the 5th round last year. His name is Stevenson Sylvester. Why do you give the Steelers 2 OL with no DL? We need to find a NT of the future. How about Kendrick Ellis in the 4th round? With 2 years of development he will be a stud. I loved your first 2 rounds for the Steelers but it went down hill after that.
--> Fair enough about Stevenson Sylvester, but I don't see the Steelers taking Kenrick Ellis because of his character concerns.

" I'm concerned about Fairley's work ethic and the fact that he's a one-year wonder. I'm not concerned he'll try hard all the time, so I'm not a fan of taking a guy like that and not filling a need. The Lions were fine at DT. "
Walter, the Lions are already mixing in the 34 and standing Suh up on the odd down. Within two years, I expect them to follow the Steelers lead, playing the 2-4-5; then, maybe, the 4-1-6. That'll work much more effectively with NoFair there with him. Plus, who DO they block (in the 43)? Maybe he DOES fail; then again, maybe the Prince ISN'T the bee's knees in the Tampa-2, either. (It's hindsight, but illustrative, that they made the big move to go up and get Peterson, no? Their needs; their grades. They can miss, like anybody, but I'd rather they were shot for chicken thieves than poultry.)

"From Baba Hanz: Your p3nis can do much more!"
I worked with a guy who bought that hook, line, and sinker. Thirty-four years old, beautiful wife, three kids at that impressionable age. A year later, he's living (more or less) alone, chains through his nipples and belly button, rings in his ears, tongue, nugget, and chicken skin, and body-tight mesh shirt. Thank you, Baba, but mine already does quite enough. Move along, you freak.

Clearly, Walt has a problem with white OLinemen. If Danny Watkins was Samoan, Chinese or black player, he would celebrating the 26-year old as a great story and praising Andy Reid for his gutsy pick.
It cetainly isn't an "F" pick. If Reid gets 5 years out of the low-mileage Watkins it's a win. He's probably the top guard prospect.

Is it just me or is Gruden becoming more insufferable with each passing minute? Throw Scheffter in there as well.

Being a Vol fan I don't really have a dog in this fight, but to find it hard to understand what issues Mallett has hanging over him. Reading what his Arkansas team-mates and coaches say about him makes him sound like the best team-mate possible. Coach Petrino is quoted as saying as much. Now Cam Newton is another issue I'm puzzled by. I see a theft, a cheat and a hooker who was pimped by the preacher dad. Now I need to hush before you remind me of out problems in Knoxville.

Ryan Mallett has got to be the pick of the litter.
There are a few teams that know this and are keeping very quiet. This guy is like no others of recent times that can do what he does with a football. Give him some protection, scramble a little and he possess the abilty to make any and all throws in the NFL+. Any team in need of a "to be future brilliant NFL quarterback" should make Ryan their first choice. I hope Miami takes him in the first round at 15th I see another Marino in the making.

I don't see us getting gabbert due to it reminds too much of Alex Smith. Both are very similar in style of play when coming out of the collegiate level. Difference Alex was more polish and had a better season and stats, while gabbert is bigger, w/a better arm. but both one read and throw, gabbert takes more chances with his throws from what i have seen to where he put his WRs in harms way more than he should. Next he don't show up on a consistent basis for big games only one this past season was OU. But was man-handled by Neb and OU was a better squad than Neb. It what skip bayless and ryan clark stated earlier this week about gabbert on espn fist take, there's nothing that amazing he do to be a top 10 pick, giving he never really did anything bad. But to be a top ten pick gotta have that 'IT' factor and many analysts state this is the weakest draft to where if none of these QBs are in a good environment are back up QBs at best. All need to get retooled to the game and also a learning curve is more steep for any QB coming out especially a spread offense. You put jim brother john took flacco, well that made sense since he came from a prostyle offense, had the strongest arm coming out of the draft, and on top of that was going to a team that had everything in place just needed a competent QB to do the job. When getting a rookie QB in the top half of the first round everything need to be in place to be successful for him. I don't think gabbert is all that great to me, and see us getting prince if peterson and von miller is gone.

What do you think are the chances of the Raiders trading back into the 1st round? If so, who do you think they'll reach for.

I don't think he will even get to #5, but if Von Miller slips to them, you say it is an automatic selection for the cards. I say do not forget about Badger stud O'Brian Schofield who was selected last year. Defensive MVP of the Senior Bowl Practices until he tore up his knee. I look for him to make an impact next year, and if Miller and Peterson are available, PP is the choice in my eyes due to the presence of OB.

"When he was throwing the ball, Ryan Mallett was one of the most impressive quarterbacks at the Combine. When he was speaking, Mallett turned people off and convinced teams to completely remove him from their draft boards.
Mallett has major red flags. Consider the drug allegations that he refused to deny. Consider the infamous Scantron-gate. Consider his sense of entitlement that makes many think of Matt Leinart, Ryan Leaf and Jimmy Clausen." I'm an Arkansas alum. You're DEAD ON with Mallett.

I love it when idiots argue with an idiot over whose the biggest idiot quarterback in the draft.
First off mocks are impossible so grading on accuracy is pointless, we our forced to grade on entertainment, and while that stupid dingleberry comment was crazy, entertaining it was. Keep up those idiot comments everyone south of ohio!! Keeps us yanks entertained like all the idiot youtube videos. |
