Oklahoma had a nice run of quarterback prospects for the NFL with Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, and Caleb Williams before he transferred. Washington State transfer John Mateer looks as though he will reestablish that tradition as he has been very impressive for the Sooners to start the 2025 season. In speaking to multiple team sources, they think high first-round potential is possible for Mateer.
“He’s a good player, just short,” texted an AFC National Scout. “Closest thing to Baker, but this kid is faster.”
Mateer has completed 72 percent of his passes for 662 yards with four touchdowns, two interceptions, and three rushing touchdowns. At 6-foot-1, 224 pounds, Mateer does not have prototype size, but he is bigger than Baker Mayfield or Kyler Murray. Last year, Mateer played well for Washington State and impressed in his first year as a starter. He completed 65 percent of his passes for 3,139 yards with 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Sources at four different teams who have scouted Mateer said they can see high-pick potential, but it is still very early in the season, and a lot can change. They feel he is off to a great start and has been impressive. Thus, Mateer will need to stay consistent and healthy. He is also eligible to go back to Oklahoma next season. However, right now, I have Mateer going very high in my latest 2026 NFL Mock Draft after hearing rave reviews from multiple team sources.
