2019 Senior Bowl: Recap

By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

North 34, South 24
  • Duke quarterback Daniel Jones could be the first quarterback selected in the 2019 NFL Draft, and he illustrated why in the 2019 Senior Bowl. Jones completed 8-of-11 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown.

Jones made some nice passes to move the ball down the field on his initial scoring drive, though he was fortunate that Virginia safety Juan Thornhill dropped an easy interception. To finish the drive, Jones had a short rushing touchdown after making a good read on a read option. Jones then had a completion of 25 yards to Terry McLaurin after lofting in a jump ball downfield on the next drive. Jones followed that up by connecting with UMass wide receiver Danny Isabella on a screen for a 19-yard touchdown. Jones showed his live arm, size, field vision and pocket presence in the Senior Bowl game. The Senior Bowl will help Jones to get picked early next April.

  • Isabella and UC Davis wide receiver Keelan Doss did nice job of getting open in the short to intermediate part of the field. Both are polished route-runners with quickness to get separation. Isabella (7-74-1) and Doss (4-55) were able to move the ball well. The two small-school receivers both look like they could stick in the NFL as No. 2 or 3 receivers.

  • West Virginia wide receiver Gary Jennings helped himself at the Senior Bowl, and performed well in the game. He got downfield to make a 54-yard reception and then used his speed to get open on a quick slant for a 10-yard touchdown from Buffalo’s Tyree Jackson. Jennings’ two receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown was a nice cap to his week. He could be a mid-round pick who ends up outperforming his draft stock.

  • Delaware safety Nasir Adderley had a bit of a slow start to the week and then came on strong in practice over the days to come. Adderley was in zone coverage and snatched a terrible throw from Jackson as the pass flew right to him for the easy pick. Adderley had five tackles with an interception in this game. He used his time in Mobile to solidify his standing, so he should go no lower than the second round.

  • Texas cornerback Kris Boyd had a rough week in Mobile and the Senior Bowl game was a fitting finish to the week. Boyd had three pass interference penalties in the opening quarter alone, as he panicked when the ball was in the air and initiated way too much contact downfield. Boyd has technical issues in coverage and off-the-field concerns, so the Senior Bowl has illustrated the problem with Boyd that could cause him to slide in the draft.

  • Western Illinois defensive tackle Khalen Saunders really helped himself in Mobile, and he finished the week in impressive fashion in the Senior Bowl game. Saunders used hands to slap away a defender and then speed to charge down the pocket and sack Will Grier in the first quarter. Saunders almost had another sack on the very next play. Saunders totaled three tackles with that sack in the game. After his impressive week in Mobile, Saunders could be a day-two pick and would be a good fit on the inside of a 4-3 defense.

  • TCU defensive end L.J. Collier had a solid week of practice, showing strength to give offensive tackles problems at the point of attack. Collier used speed and power to rush through the left guard to strip-sack Jarrett Stidham in the third quarter. He grabbed another sack and came close to a few more. Collier totaled two sacks, three tackles and a forced fumble. Entering this week, Collier had a reputation with scouts as being more of a run defender, so it really helped him to show some pass-rush ability this week.
