2023 NFL Trades Graded by Team: San Francisco 49ers

Change Team:

This page lists all the 2023 Trades for the San Francisco 49ers. I’ve listed all of the NFL Free Agent Signing Grades here, which included the trades. Because I’ve begun posting polls for the trades, I thought it would make sense to list just the NFL trades here, so archiving the voting would be easier.

November 2023 – Trades and Signings

49ers acquire DE Chase Young from Redskins for 2024 3rd-round pick
The Redskins have decided to completely blow up their roster. This is for the best because the way they are currently built, they won’t be able to compete for a Super Bowl anytime soon. Tanking for Drake Maye and then building around him with plenty of draft picks is the correct decision.

That said, it’s a bit disappointing that the Redskins weren’t able to get more than third-round pick for Chase Young. He’s still just 24, so he could have been a building block for the future. I don’t like selling low like this, but I can understand why it happened.

The 49ers, meanwhile, needed to do something to stop their three-game skid. The offense will be fine once Trent Williams and Deebo Samuel return from injury, but the defense had to be upgraded after it failed to get off the field against the Vikings and Bengals. They couldn’t get any pressure on Kirk Cousins or Joe Burrow, so acquiring another talented pass rusher was essential.

Young hasn’t quite lived up to his draft billing, but only because of injuries. He’s still having a good season with five sacks. He’ll be even better in San Francisco, as opposing offenses won’t be able to focus on him with all the attention being placed on Nick Bosa. Young is a steal for just a third-round selection.

October 2023 – Trades and Signings

49ers acquire DE Randy Gregory from Broncos for swap of 2024 sixth- and seventh-round draft picks
Teams certainly love swapping sixth- and seventh-round picks. We saw it with the J.C. Jackson and Chase Claypool deals, and now the Broncos and 49ers have engaged in a deal with the same compensation.

Randy Gregory had a few bright moments for the Broncos last year amid an injury-plagued season. There were no bright moments this season, as Gregory played extremely poorly. The Broncos considered cutting him, but the 49ers called them and took Gregory off their hands. I considered if the 49ers would be paying Gregory’s egregious salary, but that will not be the case. Denver will foot the bill for the $10 million remaining this season.

With that in mind, this is a small price to pay for the 49ers, who lost defensive line depth this offseason. Gregory will help in that regard, making San Francisco the winner of this trade.

August 2023 – Trades and Signings

Cowboys acquire QB Trey Lance from 49ers for 4th-round pick
This is somehow a bad trade for both teams. I really don’t get it for the Cowboys. They have an established franchise quarterback in the Dak Prescott, and they have a solid backup in Cooper Rush. What are they going to do with Trey Lance? Develop him and then trade him for a third-round pick? This seems like a waste of a resource.

As for the 49ers, it seems premature to give up on a quarterback with such great talent, especially given that Brock Purdy is not a guarantee just yet. What if Purdy struggles in his second year? It would be nice to turn to Trey Lance in that instance, assuming that he developed at all. That said, I think the 49ers won this trade because Lance may just be a lost cause, given his lack of development and horrible pocket awareness and field vision. Plus, moving Lance rids the locker room of a potential headache.

Grade for Cowboys – D
Grade for 49ers – C+
