2012 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Casper Ware

Position: Point Guard

Size: 5-10, 175

School: Long Beach State, Senior

Strengths:
  • A scorer
  • Ball handling
  • Change of direction/speed dribble
  • Creating off the bounce
  • Quickness
  • Three-point shooting
  • Catch-and-shoot ability
  • Step-back jumper
  • Utilizes floater in the lane
  • Competitiveness
  • On-the-ball defender

    Weaknesses:
  • Undersized
  • Will be overpowered by most NBA point guards
  • Shot selection; gets too trigger happy
  • Finishing around the rim (height a factor)
  • Not a true distributor

Summary: Ware is more of a scoring point guard than a true distributor, and he can ceratinly get buckets. However, the fact that he is undersized and not a true floor general hurts his stock. He could sneak into the second round especially since this is not a deep draft for point guards.

Player Comparison: Isaiah Thomas. Despite a productive career at Washington, Thomas was doubted as a NBA prospect due to his height. Thomas ended up being the final pick in the 2011 NBA Draft and started for the Kings this past season. Ware will have to overcome a lack of height as well, and like Thomas, he is more of a scorer than true point guard.
