2011 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Matt Howard

Position: Power Forward

Size: 6-8, 230

School: Butler, Senior

Strengths:
  • Hustle
  • Brings great energy to the floor
  • Non-stop work ethic
  • Aggressive rebounder
  • Basketball IQ
  • Makes winning plays
  • Solid fundamentals on offense
  • Three-point range
  • Free throw shooter
  • Good touch around the basket

    Weaknesses:
  • Athleticism
  • Undersized to be a NBA power forward
  • Putting the ball on the deck
  • Not a great back-to-the-basket scorer
  • Too often gets in foul trouble
  • Struggles against bigger opponents

Summary: Matt Howard is a great college basketball player, but his skills do not necessarily translate to the next level. Still, he could get looks at the next level due to his intangibles, and actually make a roster thanks to the energy he brings. More than likely, he goes undrafted, but a team could take a second-round flier.

Player Comparison: Eduardo Najera. How does Najera still have a role in the NBA? Because he brings the same intangibles to the floor that Howard does at the college level. If Howard gets his chance in the league, he will have to follow the same path of the Najeras, Brian Cardinals, Brian Scalabrines and Mark Madsens of the world by working his tail off.
