2023-24 Season Overview:

With the injuries suffered, you have to consider Cleveland’s season a win. A weak Eastern Conference helped make the Cavaliers look stronger than they probably were, but Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen were excellent. Max Strus, meanwhile, fit well, and Caris LeVert played a monster season off the bench. All-Star point guard Darius Garland had a rough season by his standards (18-6), and if the Cavaliers trade Mitchell, they will need him to play like a star again. The rumormill, however, says if they keep Mitchell, they will trade Garland. Evan Mobley still hasn’t taken the leap to All-Star, but the potential is still there. If Mitchell is traded, those two and Allen will ve the main guys for Cleveland.

Offseason Goals

The first task of Cleveland’s offseason should be making a choice betweem Mitchell and Garland, as it looks the club will only have one. Mitchell only has one season left on his contract, and although I can’t see him signing, it seems there’s a real chance he could. One trade that would make a lot of sense would be to ship Mitchell to Brooklyn for Cam Thomas and three or four first-round selections. Thomas could take Mitchell’s role at the two and as No. 1 scorer, while the picks would help fill the roster.

The team’s second task should be paying Evan Mobley, and which will be a max deal. Isaac Okoro, Cleveland’s recent lottery pick, had a nice season, and if inexpensive, he should be signed. The Cavalier should also keep Emoni Bates and Isaiah Mobley for depth. Speaking of depth, if they could get Patrick Beverly, he would be an excellent fit as a defender and much-needed reserve guard; he could also help their locker room. Signing a veteran center like Mason Plumlee or Andre Drummond would be smart as well.

As for the 2024 NBA Draft, the Cavaliers have pick No. 20. They should look to find a third big man or guard, and I love the potential of Devin Carter, who could become their third scoring guard.
