-
Jessie Bates, S, Bengals. Age: 26.
Signed with Falcons (4 years, $64 million)
Jessie Bates has seemingly been around forever, so it’s hard to believe that he’s only 26. He’s a stellar safety who is elite in run support.
-
Ryan Neal, S, Seahawks. Age: 27.
Signed with Buccaneers (1 year)
Ryan Neal came out of nowhere to perform on an extremely high level in the second half of 2022. He was terrific in coverage.
-
Taylor Rapp, S, Rams. Age: 25.
Signed with Bills
Taylor Rapp is a terrific safety, especially when it comes to stopping the run. It feels like he’s been in the NFL forever, so it’s surprising that he’s only 25.
-
Vonn Bell, S, Bengals. Age: 28.
Signed with Panthers
A short, but talented and well-rounded safety, Vonn Bell doesn’t have any weaknesses in his game.
-
Juan Thornhill, S, Chiefs. Age: 27.
Signed with Browns (3 years, $21 million)
Juan Thornhill tends to miss more tackles than average, but he’s great in coverage.
-
Jimmie Ward, S, 49ers. Age: 32.
Signed with Texans
Jimmie Ward is a terrific safety when healthy. The problem is that he has played only two full seasons in his career, and he missed five games last year. Now 32, Ward could have greater issues remaining off the injury report.
-
Jordan Poyer, S, Bills. Age: 32.
Re-signed with Bills
Jordan Poyer has been an excellent safety for years, and that was once again the case in 2022. However, Poyer is now 32, so he could be regressing soon.
-
Devin McCourty, S, Patriots. Age: 36.
Announced retirement
Devin McCourty has been an exceptional player for quite some time, but his time in the NFL is coming to an end. He turns 36 in August.
-
DeShon Elliott, S, Lions. Age: 26.
Signed with Dolphins
DeShon Elliott is quality safety who was a nice addition for Detroit’s secondary. The downside is his dubious injury history.
-
Donovan Wilson, S, Cowboys. Age: 28.
Re-signed with Cowboys (3 years, $24 million)
It’s hard to believe that Donovan Wilson was a sixth-round pick entering the NFL because he has emerged as a quality safety with no weaknesses.
-
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, S/CB, Eagles. Age: 25.
Signed with Lions
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is a talented and very versatile player, fully capable of playing anywhere in the secondary.
-
Adrian Amos, S, Packers. Age: 30.
Adrian Amos inexplicably had the worst season of his career by far in 2022, as he was torched in coverage quite often. Amos is usually a great player in Green Bay’s secondary, so perhaps he’ll bounce back in 2023.
-
Rodney McLeod, S, Colts. Age: 33.
Signed with Browns
Rodney McLeod is coming off a great year after some injury-plagued seasons. He could continue to perform on a high note, but his age (33) is becoming a concern.
-
Terrell Edmunds, S, Steelers. Age: 26.
Signed with Eagles
Terrell Edmunds had a rocky start to his career, but played well last year. He’s excellent in coverage, though he tends to miss some tackles.
-
Julian Love, S, Giants. Age: 25.
Signed with Seahawks (2 years, $12 million)
Julian Love had some down years earlier in his career, but made some big improvements to his game this past season.
-
John Johnson, S, Browns. Age: 27.
Signed with Rams
John Johnson is coming off a down year with plenty of missed tackles, but he’s young enough to rebound and perform on a high level again.
-
Duron Harmon, S, Raiders. Age: 32.
Duron Harmon is coming off a strong season, particularly when in coverage. The downside is that he’s now 32, so he could be on the decline soon.
-
Nasir Adderley, S, Chargers. Age: 26.
Announced retirement
Nasir Adderley is solid in coverage, but tends to miss one too many tackles.
-
Logan Ryan, S/CB, Buccaneers. Age: 32.
Logan Ryan is a versatile player who can play both safety and slot cornerback. He’ll be on the decline soon at the age of 32.
-
Kareem Jackson, S, Broncos. Age: 35.
Re-signed with Broncos
Kareem Jackson used to be a terrific player, but he’s turning 35 this offseason and doesn’t have much time remaining in the NFL.
