Scouts See Tyree Wilson Late 1/Early 2

On NFL scouts’ preseason watch list, one highly regarded player was Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson. He broke out in 2021, recording seven sacks, 37 tackles and a pass defended. Listed at 6-foot-6, 275 pounds, Wilson has good size for the next level. Pro team sources told WalterFootball.com that Wilson’s positive buzz has continued into the fall.
“He’s having a solid year,” texted an AFC area scout. “Explosiveness is not special, but there’s been quality rushers in league with similar play style due to their length offsetting any athletic shortcomings. Won’t have same success against NFL [offensive tackles] because they can match the length and athlete, but he’s got a lot of transferable traits. Lot of the late 1-early 2 buzz.
“Lot of like, but don’t love. Doesn’t have Cam Jordan power coming out and not super twitched up. Got enough of both on that long body to intrigue though. Built like a MAC [power forward]. Not really built for power. He can put on bulk with that frame though if coaches want him to in the league. There are guys with his profile who have been good, solid players.
Question is going to be if he’s explosive enough to warrant that high-pick status. He’s not as explosive as Aldon Smith coming out or the bendy athlete that [Jason Pierre-Paul] was. I can think of a few guys as to what he could become, but I’m going with Mathias Kiwanuka because of a lot of the same questions how his skill set translates at same stage. Tyree might be a notch faster and tick stronger than Kiwi.”
Wilson plays a premium position, and if he puts together good production with offseason workouts, he has a real shot at being a Thursday night pick next April in the 2023 NFL Draft.
