  • Tyler Van Dyke 2023 Preview
    By Charlie Campbell

Career Recap: D’Eriq King was expected to be Miami’s starting quarterback in 2021, but an injury to King forced the redshirt freshman Van Dyke into the starting lineup. Immediately, Van Dyke showed that he is a gamer, keeping Miami in some high-scoring shutouts and leading some impressive comebacks. Van Dyke out-dueled Kenny Pickett to lead Miami to a road win over the future ACC champions, and Van Dyke led his team to other impressive wins against teams like N.C. State as well. On the year, Van Dyke completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions.

2022 Season Outlook: Van Dyke has a lot of easy opponents in both conference and in non-conference games. As long as his supporting cast performs decently, Van Dyke should put together a good 2022 season. The best opponents he will face include Texas A&M on Sept. 17 and Clemson on Nov. 19. Those defenses will feature the most NFL talent that Van Dyke will see in his second season as the Hurricanes’ starter.

Skill-Set Summary: The current rage for NFL teams is to get dual-threat mobile quarterbacks, and Van Dyke is not in the mold of a Pat Mahomes, Deshaun Watson or Josh Allen. Van Dyke is more of a traditional pocket passer, and as a college quarterback, he is reminiscent of Kyle Trask at Florida. Van Dyke looks like he has a stronger arm than Trask and a little more mobile athleticism, but overallm they are similar prospects as traditional thickly built pocket-passing quarterbacks.

As a passer, Van Dyke shows the ability to work through the pocket and distribute the ball to carve up a defense. Van Dyke has good pocket presence and sees the field really well. As redshirt freshman and first-season starter in 2021, Van Dyke’s field vision was very impressive. He scanned his targets, worked through his progressions, and made good decisions about who to throw the ball to. Van Dyke showed worked off his first read and was not slow at dealing with defenses.

Van Dyke was an accurate passer and threw some pretty deep balls in his Miami debut. On the back of his quality arm, Van Dyke can air out passes downfield, and he does a nice job of dropping them in to receivers downfield and along the sideline. With nice precision, Van Dyke throws pretty touch passes to beat good coverage. While he is a threat to go vertical, Van Dyke is smart and will take the check down when nothing else is open. He did a good job of leading those outlet receivers for yards after the catch in 2021, and hid smart play resulted in some huge gains for Miami.

In 2022, it would be good to see Van Dyke display more power in his throws and fire some fastballs into tight windows. While Van Dyke has some straight-line speed, he is not shifty enough in the pocket to dodge sacks and buy time. Against pro defenses, he will not be a running threat, so he will function more as a traditional pocket passer.

2023 NFL Draft Expectations: The majority of redshirt sophomores return for their junior years, so Van Dyke could easily return to Miami for 2023. That could help his draft slot because he has the potential to be the top quarterback for that class assuming both Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud enter the 2023 NFL Draft.
