2010 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Maurkice Pouncey

Strengths:
  • Very good frame with bulk and strength
  • Athletic with good quickness
  • Heavy hands
  • Powerful run blocker
  • Physical and tough
  • Mobile – impressive range
  • Gets to second level quickly
  • Effective at pulls and traps
  • Highly experienced (39 career starts)
  • Good character and intangibles
  • Strong work ethic
  • Productive against talented opponents
  • Experience at both guard/center – can play either position in NFL
  • Still has potential

    Weaknesses:
  • Might not be a natural knee bender
  • Footwork needs to be polished
  • Seems to lack pass protection awareness
  • Rough transition from Florida’s unorthodox blocking scheme
  • Technique can get sloppy
  • Doesn’t always finish blocks

Summary: Pouncey is a talented player and should be an immediate starter in the league, but I don’t think he is a better prospect than Alex Mack last year. Pouncey is a bit overhyped. His technique tends to get sloppy in the fourth quarter and I have concerns with him in pass protection at the next level against more athletic defensive tackles in a more complicated scheme. Pouncey will come off the board in the top 30 picks and could go as high as No. 18 to Pittsburgh or No. 19 to Atlanta. I have a low first-round grade on Pouncey.

Player Comparison: Andre Gurode. Gurode has a good skill set for a center with prototypical height and athleticism. He’s a well-rounded player.
