2012 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Will Barton

Position: Shooting Guard

Size: 6-6, 175

School: Memphis, Sophomore

Strengths:
  • Athleticism
  • Slasher
  • Ball-handling
  • Explosive at the rim
  • Body control in the lane
  • Creative scorer
  • Dynamite in transition
  • Quick first step
  • Length
  • Active defender
  • Rebounds well for his position

    Weaknesses:
  • Very wirey; needs to get stronger
  • Handling contact, more physical matchups
  • Shot selection
  • Forces the issue too often
  • Inconsistent outside shooter
  • Playing off the ball

Summary: Barton is an extremely gifted scorer when attacking the basket, and his length serves him well defensively and on the glass. However, at 170 pounds, handling the physicality of the pro game is his biggest obstacle in transitioning to the NBA. Because of that concern, he will likely be a late first/early second-round selection.

Player Comparison: Corey Brewer. Like Brewer, Barton is a long, athletic, slashing wing who entered the league needing to add muscle to thin skinny frames. Neither guy shoots the ball efficiently from the outside, but both excel in the open floor.
