Brian Urlacher Retires

One of the top linebackers of this recent generation announced his retirement Wednesday, as Brian Urlacher called it quits after 13 seasons. Playing in 182 games, Urlacher recorded 1,229 tackles, 41.5 sacks and 22 interceptions. He qualified for the Pro Bowl eight times and made it to one Super Bowl – a loss to the Indianapolis Colts following the 2006 season.

Urlacher was recently cut by the Bears because of financial differences. There was some speculation that he would sign with the Vikings, but he opted for retirement instead. “Although I could continue playing, I’m not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that’s up to my standards,” Urlacher wrote in a statement. “When considering this, along with the fact that I could retire after a 13-year career wearing only one jersey for such a storied franchise, my decision became pretty clear.”

Urlacher told the media that there was no scenario in which he’d make a return.

“I’m tired of working out,” Urlacher said Wednesday afternoon. “I won’t be able to move like I want to.”

With that in mind, the only question remains whether or not Urlacher will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Opinions vary. I’ve heard some Chicago fans opine that it may take Urlacher a few years to be enshrined.

So, what do you think? Will Urlacher be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, or will it take him several years?
