So, basketball is actually going on tonight? Oh, OK. I think this is a classic case of one-game overreaction. Chicago beat Miami in Game 1. That was no fluke. The fluke was Game 2 because the Bulls didn’t try. They were conserving their energy for Games 3 and 4, so they didn’t want to shoot their wad. They’ll be much more competitive tonight. With that in mind, I had Miami -6 as the correct spread, so I like getting 2.5 points of value.

People may want to bet on them because of what happened in Boston this past week, but that could serve as a distraction.

To say that Miami is struggling right now might seem a little strange, but that’s the case, given that the team had trouble putting away Orlando and Philadelphia as double-digit favorites. Talent’s not the issue; it’s the Heat’s focus. LeBron James and company have nothing to prove right now. They’re the No. 1 seed, so they can coast toward the playoffs.
The Pacers, meanwhile, are playing well, having won eight of their previous 10. They should be able to stay within the number; my projected spread for this game is Heat -4.5.

Second, Ersan Ilyasova is doubtful and J.J. Redick is questionable. Third, the Kings have quietly performed well of late; they’re actually 5-2 against the spread in their previous seven games.

I think this spread is way off. By numbers, the Warriors should be favored by 7.5, and that’s even taking into account that Denver played last night. Golden State has not been good since its hot start. The team even lost to the horrific 76ers on Saturday, which was pretty eye-opening for me. The Kings, meanwhile, have been pretty competitive for the most part lately. They should be able to hang within the high number.

This spread is six points off as far as I’m concerned. Considering New York played yesterday, the Cavaliers should favored by three. I’ll take six points of value any day.
The Knicks are so overrated. They’re an old, regressing team. Miami played like it was intoxicated Sunday afternoon, yet was still able to come back from double digits and win. The Knicks will be worn out from that tough battle and won’t be focused on this game. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, are 7-5 in their previous 12, covering nine of those contests. Kyrie Irving will be back in the lineup tonight, so that’ll be a big boost.

My projected line for this game is Heat -8. I think Miami’s going to be especially motivated in this contest, having lost to New York twice thus far this season.

I’ve been waiting for a Hawks +6 number to pop up all day. It finally showed up at 5Dimes, so I’m jumping on it. I view Atlanta and Los Angeles as equals, so getting three points of value over my projected line of Lakers -3 is a pretty good deal.
I’m not a believer in this Laker squad. They’ve won four out of five, but their most impressive win came against Boston at home. Meh. They also won on the road in Dallas, but Atlanta did the same thing recently. The Hawks are actually hotter, having won six of eight. They slipped up at Phoenix on Friday night, but I feel like they were looking ahead to this contest.

Kyrie Irving is out, but I still really like the Cavaliers to cover. They’ve been just fine without Irving the past two games, winning at Chicago and then beating the Raptors by double digits. Cleveland is on fire in general, going 7-4 (9-2 against the spread) in its previous nine.
Even with Irvin sidelined, my projected line for this contest is Clippers -2, so I love the value with Cleveland. Los Angeles just played last night and could be exhausted after a tough battle against Indiana.

I noted in the comment board below last night that I was planning on betting the Warriors – the only thing I didn’t know was how many units I’d use. The spread then was Knicks -6.5, but it’s risen to -8 for some strange reason. My projected line for this game is New York -5, so I love the Golden State tonight.
The Warriors lost yesterday, but they were likely conserving energy for this contest. They should have a chance to win outright, as the Knicks are terrible. New York’s two wins since the beginning of the month have come against the pathetic Timberwolves and struggling Sixers – and both victories were by just six points. The Knicks are terrible, so I’m going to keep fading them.

What are the Lakers favored by seven for? They stink. I understand this line is inflated because the Celtics played last night, while Los Angeles is coming off an extended period of rest, but that doesn’t mean the team will stink any less. These Lakers nearly lost to the Suns (at home) and Bobcats recently. They have no business being favored by a touchdown over a competent opponent.

All four victories have been by nine or more points, and two of the wins came without Eric Gordon, who’s expected to return tonight. There’s tons of money on Chicago, yet this spread has barely moved. That’s an indication that the sharps like the home dog.

To say the Knicks are struggling right now is an understatement. They were blown out at home against the Clippers. Before that, they had trouble dispatching the Timberwolves and also lost to the Bullets and Sixers. Their age has finally caught up to them, so they’ll be a nice fade team down the stretch. Last night’s Boston-Denver game is why I hate sports betting sometimes. It’s possible to get a game exactly right but lose money. The Nuggets, underdogs of two points, took the Celtics to triple overtime. Boston led by two, but hit a meaningless layup just as the buzzer sounded. The team won by four and consequently covered the spread. Ugh.
Moving on, the 76ers are one of my two plays tonight. They’ve won five of seven, which includes a win over the Knicks. Speaking of the Knicks, the Clippers just beat them in an emotional game yesterday, so they could be tired and unfocused. I think we’re getting good value with Philadelphia here, as the Statfox Power Ratings say the 76ers should be -1.

Hmm… maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to bet against the best team in basketball. Here’s another low-unit pick as I get my feet wet. The 76ers are so much worse defensively this year. Andrew Bynum is out, and I just feel as though Denver is the superior squad. Besides, Andre Iguodala will want some revenge.

I had a horrible season picking NBA games last year, but I won’t take any blame for it and instead will just point at the lockout for ruining things.
This reminds me of the Cowboys-Giants NFL season opener. The Celtics spent the offseason acquiring big men to take advantage of Miami’s weakness. This game means much more to them than it does the Heat. By the way, the spread opened at -7, and despite slight action on the host, it has dropped to -6, which indicates that the sharp bettors are on Boston.
