2014 NFL Draft Stock Up
Tom Savage, QB, Pittsburgh
Savage’s stock continues to rise. More teams are showing interest in him with some late workouts and meetings. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder has an intriguing skill set with a big arm, pocket presence and experience in a pro-style offense. WalterFootball.com knows there are some teams that are considering Savage in the middle of the second day of the 2014 NFL Draft. Some feel that Savage won’t get out of the second round.
Cody Latimer, WR, Indiana
Similar to Savage, Latimer’s stock has been steadily rising. That was given further proof when he was invited to attend the 2014 NFL Draft by the NFL. The league wants some second-day prospects there for Friday night, but they don’t want those players to fall too far. Having Latimer attend indicates that league has received assurances from teams that he won’t get out of the second round. Latimer was once viewed as a mid-round pick.
Will Sutton, DT, Arizona State
WalterFootball.com has heard from sources that there are teams considering Sutton for the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Namely the Bears, Cowboys, Raiders, Bucs, Rams, Seahawks and Jaguars are looking hard at Sutton. With so many teams interested, Sutton could go in the first 50 picks. Teams are looking for interior linemen who can get after the quarterback, and after Aaron Donald, Sutton is the next most accomplished interior pass – in the 2014 NFL Draft. Sutton could go higher than expected on draft day.
HaHa Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
There have been more and more projections of Clinton-Dix cracking the top 10 or 12 picks in the 2014 NFL Draft. Some feel that He is in consideration for the sixth-overall pick to the Atlanta Falcons. Clinton-Dix is also being connected with the Lions at No. 10 and the Titans at No. 11. It looks unlikely that he would get past the middle of the first round with Chicago and Dallas. Clinton-Dix is the top-rated safety, and there are a lot of teams that need safety help picking early in the first round.
Logan Thomas, QB, Virginia Tech
Like Savage, Thomas’ stock has been steadily rising over the past few months. Thomas had some rough moments across the past few seasons, but teams love his skill set. With his big size, arm strength and running ability Thomas can physically do it all. He needs development in his field vision and accuracy, but some teams think that those problems are fixable. Thomas has also impressed teams in interviews. One source said that Thomas is the most accountable quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft. He could easily go in the middle of the second day.
Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech
Sources picking in the middle of the second round have told WalterFootball.com that they aren’t confident that Amaro will get to their selection. They think that it could happen, but is unlikely. Amaro’s stock has had a late rise, and he could end up going in the top half of the second round. With concerns about Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Amaro looks likely to be the second tight end selected after North Carolina’s Eric Ebron.
2014 NFL Draft Stock Down
Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
Sources have said that Roberson has had one of the worst leadups to the draft among any prospect they can remember. At one time, he had a shot at being a first-round pick, but he performed poorly at the Combine and followed it up with a terrible pro day. Roberson was injured during the 2013 season and made a huge mistake in entering the 2014 NFL Draft. He would be lucky to go in the second round and could fall to the mid-rounds.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins, S, Washington
Seferian-Jenkins is up or down depending on who you ask, but in speaking with sources at NFL teams, they feel that Seferian-Jenkins could slide in Round 2 of the 2014 NFL Draft. It isn’t out of the realm of possibility for Seferian-Jenkins to slip to the third round. He was said not to have interviewed well with teams this Spring. Some have off-the-field and character concerns with him, too. WalterFootball.com knows some teams that have a need at tight end but won’t draft him because of those concerns.
Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame
In conversations with teams, it is becoming increasingly clear that they believe that Tuitt will be available in the second round. There are some teams picking late in the first round that could use some defensive line help though. The Patriots and 49ers would be good fits for him, but many believe those teams are targeting other positions. Sources feel that Tuitt is more likely fall to Round 2 than go in Round 1. Tuitt could be a nice value pick on the second day.
Lamarcus Joyner, CB, Florida State
Many pundits project Joyner to be a second-round pick, but league contacts have told me he is being graded out in the third round. Sources say that on top of the lack of size (5-8, 190), Joyner doesn’t have the speed to make up for it. He lives off instincts and was a great college player, but teams feel that Joyner could get picked on by NFL receivers.
