Weaknesses:
Summary: Alabama has produced a ton of offensive line talent under Nick Saban, and Wills will keep that tradition alive in the 2020 NFL Draft. Over the past few seasons, Wills was the Crimson Tide’s starter at right tackle, and he was tasked with protecting the blind side for left-handed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Wills did his job as a steady and effective pass protector while being a tough blocker. The Crimson Tide scored a ton of points in recent years, with Wills being a key contributor to let the team’s play-makers produce big plays.
As a pass blocker, Wills is very gifted, combining excellent athleticism with quickness and agility. His quick feet allow him to easily able get depth in his drop to take away the edge from speed rushers. Wills plays with very good leverage to stop bull rushes and has a textbook ability to bend at the knee. You never saw Wills bending at the waist, and he does a superb job of handling a variety of pass-rushing moves.
Wills has some real nastiness to him in the ground game. He blocks through the whistle and is very physical at the point of attack. Assissted by a bad attitude, Wills gets violent with defenders to push them around and challenges them to stay in their gap. Wills is quick out of his stance and fires to the second level. He is a smooth mover in space, so that combined with his drive-blocking ability makes him a great fit for either a zone blocking or power-man scheme in the NFL.
For the next level, Wills has some areas he can stand to improve. He can be late seeing blitzes on the edge, so getting his vision in check is necessary. His hand placement could use refinement, and that help him with one of his other issues, which is sustainment. Wills can get too reliant on his initial hit to knock defenders out of the play, as he goes for a hard hit to rock them backward rather than securing his contact to sustain the block. Wills can overextend at times, and he also needs to improve his ability to defend inside moves, including counters, spins and games.
Wills has the ability to be franchise left tackle or continue to play on the right side and be an excellent right tackle. He has plug-and-play starting ability with Pro Bowl potential. Wills looks like a lock to be a top-12 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and could go in the top 10.
Player Comparison: Bryan Bulaga. Bulaga (6-5, 314) and Wills are similar in size and both have plus athleticism and some nastiness as blockers.
