2010 NFL Free Agency: Star rating is out of five. Age listing as of Sept. 1, 2010.
-
Brandon Marshall (RFA), WR, Broncos. Age: 26.
Traded to Dolphins
Brandon Marshall is one of the most talented receivers in the NFL. He’s a head case, but he’s well worth the trouble. Josh McDaniels just left this site.
-
Miles Austin-Jones (RFA), WR, Cowboys. Age: 26.
Re-signed with Cowboys (1 year, $3.1 million)
Miles Austin-Jones came out of nowhere in October to finish with 81 catches, 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns. Pretty impressive, considering he didn’t even start until Week 5.
-
Vincent Jackson (RFA), WR, Chargers. Age: 27.
Re-signed with Chargers (1 year, $583,000)
Vincent Jackson amazingly has never caught more than 68 passes in a single season, but with his size (6-5, 230) and downfield ability, he’s one of the top wideouts in the NFL.
-
Braylon Edwards (RFA), WR, Jets. Age: 27.
Re-signed with Jets (1 year, $5 million)
Braylon Edwards is a physically gifted receiver who really opens up New York’s running game because defenses have to respect him. However, he has major issues with consistency regarding his hands.
-
Derrick Mason, WR, Ravens. Age: 36.
Re-signed with Ravens (2 years, $8 million)
It’s amazing that at age 35 and the only viable option in Baltimore’s offense, Derrick Mason notched his eighth 1,000-yard season in nine years. He’s not a No. 1 anymore, but he continues to be very consistent.
-
Antonio Bryant, WR, Bengals. Age: 29.
There’s no denying Antonio Bryant’s talent. He’s a gifted receiver. But would I want him on my team? Absolutely not. He’s a locker room toad who causes too many problems.
-
Lance Moore (RFA), WR, Saints. Age: 27.
Re-signed with Saints (1 year, $1.7 million)
Lance Moore barely played in 2009 because of nagging injuries, but he’s still a very talented slot receiver.
-
Steve Breaston (RFA), WR/PR, Cardinals. Age: 27.
Re-signed with Cardinals (1 year, $2.3 million)
Steve Breaston has proven that he’s more than capable of replacing Anquan Boldin in the lineup. Breaston isn’t as talented as Boldin, but he still managed to generate 1,000 receiving yards in 2008.
-
Davone Bess (ERFA), WR/PR, Dolphins. Age: 24.
Re-signed with Dolphins
Davone Bess is a talented slot receiver who caught 71 balls in 2009. He’ll only be 25 on Sept. 13.
-
Brad Smith (RFA), WR/KR, Jets. Age: 26.
Re-signed with Jets (1 year, $1.7 million)
Brad Smith can be used as a receiver, Wildcat quarterback and kick returner. He averaged 31 yards on 10 kickoff returns this year.
-
Courtney Roby (RFA), KR, Saints. Age: 27.
Re-signed with Saints (1 year)
Courtney Roby averaged 27.5 yards per kickoff return with one touchdown.
-
Jason Avant (RFA), WR, Eagles. Age: 27.
Re-signed with Eagles (5 years, $18 million; $8 million guaranteed)
One of the more underrated players in the NFL, Jason Avant caught 40 passes for 579 yards out of the slot.
-
Terrell Owens, WR, Bills. Age: 36.
Signed with Bengals (1 year, $2 million)
Terrell Owens had only one 100-yard game in 2009. His pedestrian quarterbacks didn’t help, but neither did Owens’ declining skill set. At 36, he’s not worth the trouble anymore.
-
Malcom Floyd (RFA), WR, Chargers. Age: 28.
Re-signed with Chargers (1 year, $3.1 million)
Malcom Floyd failed to catch more than four passes in any game this year except for the season finale. He has intriguing size (6-5, 225), but hasn’t been able to put it together yet.
-
Nate Burleson, WR, Seahawks. Age: 29.
Signed with Lions (5 years, $25 million; $11 million guaranteed)
Nate Burleson is coming off a very solid year, catching 63 balls for 812 yards in 13 games. There is no doubt in my mind, however, that once Burleson signs an overpriced contract, he’ll revert to Sloth Mode.
-
Plaxico Burress, WR, Giants. Age: 33.
Plaxico Burress may get a work furlough this fall. If so, I don’t know if I’d expect much, given that he’s been in jail for a year because scumbag DA Robert Morgentheau wanted to make an example out of him.
-
Devin Thomas, WR, Panthers. Age: 23.
Devin Thomas is a major NFL Draft bust. He’s still young though, so maybe someone will be able to coach him up and get him to play up to his potential.
-
T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR, Seahawks. Age: 32.
Signed with Ravens (1 year, $885,000)
T.J. Houshmandzadeh is old and slow. He’s also coming off sports hernia surgery, so he’ll probably miss a few games this year. All teams should stay away.
-
Chris Chambers, WR, Chiefs. Age: 32.
Re-signed with Chiefs (3 years, $15 million; $5.9 million guaranteed)
Being cut by the Chargers served as a wake-up call for Chris Chambers, who eclipsed the 70-yard barrier five times in nine games with the Chiefs. Having said that, I wouldn’t be able to trust Chambers with a new contract.
-
Kevin Walter (RFA), WR, Texans. Age: 29.
Re-signed with Texans (5 years, $21.5 million; $8 million guaranteed)
Kevin Walter has plenty of starting experience, but he’s inconsistent. Expected to step up after a strong 2008 (60 catches, 899 yards), Walter managed 51 receptions for only 581 yards.
-
Matt Jones, WR, Bengals. Age: 27.
Matt “Coke Zero” Jones is talented, but who knows if he’s kept his nose clean?
-
Mark Clayton (RFA), WR, Ravens. Age: 28.
Re-signed with Ravens (1 year, $1.8 million)
Mark Clayton is an inconsistent, drop-happy receiver. One game he’ll catch seven balls for 126 yards. In the next three weeks, he’ll have two receptions total.
-
Muhsin Muhammad, WR, Panthers. Age: 37.
Announced retirement
John Fox hates rolling the dice with young players, but Muhsin Muhammad can’t be a No. 2 wideout going forward.
- Kelley Washington (RFA), WR, Ravens. Age: 31.
- David Clowney, WR, Jets. Age: 25.
- Maurice Stovall (RFA), WR, Buccaneers. Age: 25. — Re-signed with Buccaneers (1 year, $1.1 million)

- Kevin Curtis, WR, Eagles. Age: 32.
