UPDATED 6/17
Point guard is the deepest position in the 2009 NBA Draft with eight players likely being taken in the first round, and that number possibly could jump to as high as 11. Depending on a team’s need, there are a few different directions it can go if it’s looking to draft a point guard. Experience versus potential will likely determine which team takes which point guard based on the direction of their franchise.

-
Ricky Rubio, Spain
Height: 6-3. Weight: 180. Year: 1990
Projected Selection: 2-4.
A true play-maker with the basketball in his hands… Completely unselfish and looks to pass rather than shoot… Despite being 18 years old, has already played a few years professionally in one of the toughest Euro leagues… If he can adapt to the NBA game by becoming more physical and a better shooter, he could be a special player.
-
Jonny Flynn, Syracuse
Height: 6-0.75. Weight: 195. Year: So.
Projected Selection: 4-10.
He just gets it… Knows when to put a game in his hands and score for his team, but also is a great floor leader and distributor… As shown by his six overtime performance against UConn in the Big East Tournament, his toughness and heart cannot be questioned… Explosive in transition with great leaping ability… Not afraid to attack the rim… Probably the safest of the top point guard prospects.
-
Stephen Curry, Davidson
Height: 6-3. Weight: 181. Year: Jr.
Projected Selection: 5-11.
The best pure shooter in the draft, his range from deep is limitless… Quick release which means he needs little separation from a defender to get a good look… Moves well without the ball… Needs to work on his defense and decision-making as he will likely find the most success in the NBA playing the point… MUST get stronger.
-
Jrue Holiday, UCLA
Height: 6-4.25. Weight: 199. Year: Fr.
Projected Selection: 4-14.
Grossly underachieved in his one year at UCLA, but still has the skill set that NBA scouts desire… A great athlete who can D’ it up… Ideal size for an NBA point guard, but not the best shooter… Will be drafted based on potential which is dangerous if too much is asked of him right away.
-
Brandon Jennings, Italy
Height: 6-1. Weight: 170. Year: 1989
Projected Selection: 4-15.
Learned a big-time lesson and matured in his one year as a pro in Italy when he didn’t see a lot of playing time… Excels in transition because of his great athleticism and is a great creator… Lacks consistency with his jumper and tends to force his shots too often… May need a year or two before he becomes a real contributor.
-
Eric Maynor, VCU
Height: 6-3.25. Weight: 164. Year: Sr.
Projected Selection: 10-22.
An experienced point guard who knows when to get his teammates involved and when to take a game over with his scoring ability… Great size for an NBA point guard, but a bit on the thin side… Solid mid-range game… Can create his own shot off the dribble… Must improve defensively… Ready to contribute immediately.
-
Jeff Teague, Wake Forest
Height: 6-1.5. Weight: 175. Year: So.
Projected Selection: 13-22.
A great play-maker who shot the ball at high percentage from all areas of the court… More of a shoot-first point guard who will have to work on his passing ability… Great leaper who can get up and down the floor on the break in a hurry… At his best when using his athleticism to penetrate and finish at the rim.
-
Ty Lawson, North Carolina
Height: 6-0.5. Weight: 198. Year: Jr.
Projected Selection: 13-22.
Defines the phrase “floor general”… Lightning quick with the basketball and knows how to run an offense… His three-point shot has vastly improved… A little on the small side, but is very strong… Saw his stock rise due to his great play during Carolina’s run to the National Title.
-
Patty Mills, St. Mary’s
Height: 6-0.5. Weight: 175. Year: So.
Projected Selection: 22-early second round.
Made a big splash with his solid play for Australia in last summer’s Olympic Games…Has a gunner’s mentality, but shot the ball at a low percentage due to poor shot selection… Extremely quick first step which allows him to get off just about any shot he wants… A bit under-sized and physically weak…
-
Nick Calathes, Greece/Florida
Height: 6-5. Weight: 185. Year: So.
Projected Selection: late first/early second.
Likely would have been picked in the early-to-mid 20’s but decided to play porfessionally in Greece before awaiting his NBA fate… Has a great feel for the game… A good shooter with a quick release… Needs to get stronger… Not the best athlete which is a concern in defending quicker players at the next level…
-
Toney Douglas, Florida State
Height: 6-2. Weight: 183. Year: Sr.
Projected Selection: late first/early second.
A combo guard who is more of a scorer than true point guard… Smooth looking jump shooter with great quickness in getting to the rim… A lockdown defender who uses his length to his advantage… Needs to develop better point guard skills if he wants to find a true home in the NBA…
-
Darren Collison, UCLA
Height: 6-1.5. Weight: 166. Year: Sr.
Projected Selection: late first/early second.
A three-year starter with the Bruins whose stock slipped after a disappointing senior year… Knows how to run an offense… Looks pass-first and only relies on his solid mid-range game when he needs to… Needs to get stronger as he often shies away from contact when driving to the hoop…
