2010 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Nic Wise

Position: Point Guard

Size: 5-9, 177

School: Arizona, Senior

Strengths:
  • Shoots the ball at a high percentage from deep and the free-throw line
  • Effective with the catch and shoot
  • Good ball-handler
  • Very quick, especially in transition
  • Court vision
  • Creative distributor
  • Pesky on-the-ball defender with quick hands
  • Strength helps offset lack of height
  • Isn’t afraid to take it at bigger defenders
  • Likes having the ball in his hands in pressure situations
  • Got himself in great condition after coming to college a bit overweight (played all 40 minutes in 11 games as a junior)

    Weaknesses:
  • Undersized for an NBA point guard
  • Played a lot of zone at Arizona and will need to prove he can handle man-to-man defense
  • Lacks any explosiveness at the basket
  • Not a great leaper

Summary: If Wise were 6-2, he would probably be a first-round talent. But he’s not. He is generously listed as 5-10, but is more around 5-8 or 5-9. The kid can ball and made a major leap in his junior season, but still doesn’t translate well into the NBA which is why he will likely be a late-second round pick or go undrafted. (Interesting tidbit: Only two players under 6-0 have been drafted since 2001: Nate Robinson and T.J. Ford)

Player Comparison: Speedy Claxton. Claxton stands at 5-11, but as his nickname suggests, he uses his quickness as well as his knack for scoring and finding teammates to keep a job in the Association. Wise will have to follow suit if he is going to make a career in the NBA.
