2011 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Klay Thompson

Position: Shooting Guard

Size: 6-6, 185

School: Washington State, Junior

Strengths:
  • Three-point sharp-shooter
  • Limitless range from distance
  • Stretches defenses
  • Catch and shoot ability
  • Moves well off the ball
  • Great job of squaring up his body when coming off screens for shots
  • Much improved off the bounce
  • Body control in the lane
  • Passer
  • Active in passing lanes on the defensive end

    Weaknesses:
  • Strength
  • Lacks ideal NBA athleticism
  • Aggressiveness at the rim
  • Questions about character after drug arrest

Summary: With the 2011 NBA Draft class being very thin on shooting guard prospects, Thompson is the second best in that group behind Colorado’s Alec Burks. He should get looked at anywhere from the late lottery to the early 20s, and provide a team with a scoring threat off the bench.

Player Comparison: Rudy Fernandez. Fernandez is a lengthy shooter who has been a valuable weapon off Portland’s bench. Thompson has a similar game and will likely begin his NBA career in a similar role, providing a team with an outside threat off the bench.
