My Thoughts on the 2024 NFL Draft – Live on Draft Day!

What is this? I’ll be posting my thoughts on the 2024 NFL Draft here. That will include everything from the actual picks, to the TV personalities, to the commercials, etc. Anything goes. This page will be updated every five minutes or so, so I hope you join me for the 2024 NFL Draft!

By the way, I’ll be posting live 2024 NFL Draft Grades for individual picks. Overall 2024 NFL Draft Grades will be posted all day Sunday. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

7:15: It’s 7:15, and the site is still up. The site crashed around 4:30 until midnight last year, so fingers crossed. The real test will be when the picks are made because traffic will go through the roof then.

7:20: Ian Rapoport just said that Michael Penix was in consideration for the Falcons as a successor. Didn’t seem like anything he was throwing out there either. If you bet Latu, I would hedge with Penix. He’s 28/1 on BetUS. I bet a half-unit on it just to be safe.

7:22: To be clear, I don’t think it makes much sense, and I would grade it poorly. The Falcons went all-in with Kirk Cousins, so why draft Penix? It could happen, but I’d hate it.

7:24: Apparently, Roger Goodell has a bad back and asked prospects not to squeeze him too hard. Is this a ploy to gain sympathy so he’s not booed very much?

7:26: They always show so many women wearing NFL gear on these NFL Shop commercials. Where are these women wearing NFL gear? I don’t see them anywhere.

7:27: Whoops, I meant half-unit on Penix. Because I’m limited to $50 on BetUS because Pennsylvania sucks.

7:29: My dogs have decided to begin fighting, so I can’t hear the TV. I’d raise the volume, but then my wife won’t be able to put my daughter to sleep. First-world draft problems are the worst.

7:33: I don’t know why, but I have a feeling I’m going to have to take a giant deuce during the draft for the first time. I feel like it coming on, so hopefully it lasts beyond the first round and the after show on YouTube.

7:36: It’s very nice that the Zillow commercial features two best friend roommates who knit sweaters for each other. I wish one of my friends would knit a sweater for me.

7:38: Update on my dogs, for those who care. They’ve tired themselves out. Now, one is farting in the corner, while the other decided to lie down on my feet.

7:40: I said the only way Caleb Williams isn’t the top pick is if he falls down the stairs or is abducted by aliens. Well, Zarlox has just 20 minutes to zap Williams off Earth.

7:44: I personally would have gotten Metallica to perform instead of that huge woman with the blinding yellow dress.

7:47: Is this the Detroit celebrity Roger Goodell promised earlier? If so, this is a big whiff.

7:52: Sorry for the 5-minute hiatus, but I just posted a grade for the Eagles re-signing A.J. Brown.

7:54: It sounds like the Patriots will be staying at No. 3, so hopefully the Cardinals trade the fourth pick. How do the Vikings not trade up after getting Houston’s pick?

7:58: I still don’t get how the Chargers can justify passing on Marvin Harrison Jr., but it sounds like it’ll happen.

7:59: Caleb Williams will be criticized for his weird zipper suit, but I’m a fan of anything that doesn’t require ties.

8:03: The NFL Network guys aren’t wrong about the Lions. I said this a couple of years ago, but they did an amazing job of building up their scounting department, and it really paid off.

8:06: Nuggets just told me that DraftKings took down all draft props. Consider yourself lucky if you didn’t have to drive to the Trenton Thunder Baseball Stadium to make your bets. Pennsylvania sucks.

8:08: I somehow thought it might be Eminem. Let’s see if he shields Goodell from the boos.

8:09: Roger Goodell not wearing a tie. I think people should lay off the boos tonight.

8:11: Barry Sanders was so great that people were drafting him in my fantasy leagues in the final round three years after he retired.

8:12: With everyone chanting Jared Goff’s name, it would be super awkward if the Lions drafted a quarterback tonight.

8:13: The Bears on the clock! I wonder who they’re taking?

8:15: The origami snowflakes in Caleb Williams’ suit are a nice touch.

8:16: It’s nice of the Bears to keep us sweating here. I hope I get this pick correct!

8:18: The pick is in. Oh, baby!

8:22: The Caleb Williams grade is up, though it was up since this morning. I actually have grades for the Redskins taking Jayden Daniels and the Patriots pick Drake Maye written up already. If other picks are made, I’ll share those with you.

8:24: Kaylee Hartung looks like a super villain in that outfit.

With the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Redskins select Jayden Daniels, QB

8:28: Two for two, baby! Amazing!

8:29: Why is everyone in the Redskins room clapping? They knew they could get Daniels. It’s not like he fell to them unexpectedly.

8:31: The Patriots have not traded the pick. The pick is in.

With the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots select Drake Maye, QB

8:34: And now the draft begins…

8:35: Come on, Cardinals. Trade down!

With the No. 4 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Cardinals select Marvin Harrison Jr., WR

8:40: Ugh, so lame the trade didn’t happen. I’m shocked, based on what was said about this pick.

8:41: By the way, this is bad news for combine and pro day interest. Marvin Harrison Jr. didn’t bother working out and wasn’t penalized at all for it, so other players may follow suit.

8:42: It’s nice that Marvin Harrison Jr. is honoring his father because he was a class act on and off the field.

8:44: Maybe the Chargers will do the trade. Great Beverly Hills Cop music, by the way.

8:49: So much for Daniel Jeremiah having info on the Chargers with the J.C. Latham pick. I tried to connect the dots, but that failed miserably.

8:50: Giants have to go Malik Nabers, right?

8:52: Pretty Rickey’s reputation on the line here with the Giants pick.

With the No. 6 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Giants select Malik Nabers, WR

8:54: No, Pretty Rickey, no!!!

8:55: Poor Titans. No Alt, no top receivers. Will they trade down or reach for Latham?

8:56: Malik Nabers said that he wants to be the best team he can be.

8:59: Charlie Campbell is six for six in his mock draft. Way to go, Charlie!

9:01: Seven for seven!

9:05: Wow, Falcons. Wow…

9:07: Arthur Blank is making this pick, and it’s much like what David Tepper did last year.

With the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Falcons select Michael Penix Jr., QB

9:09: I love Michael Penix, but this pick makes no sense. Nice going, Arthur.

9:11: No trades. Where are the trades!? How did the Bears not trade?

With the No. 9 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bears select Rome Odunze, WR

9:14: Anyway, I hope you hedged with Penix, as mentioned above. I still can’t believe it though.

9:15: The Vikings move up for one spot for some reason.

9:18: It’s funny that the Jets duped the Vikings into trading up, but it’s not like Minnesota is giving up too much.

With the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Vikings select J.J. McCarthy, QB

9:22: It’s nice to honor these families, but I wish they’d stop the clock so the broadcast wouldn’t fall so far behind.

9:26: I’m shocked that this Jets pick isn’t Brock Bowers. Wow.

With the No. 11 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Jets select Olu Fashanu, OT

9:30: Denver took like two seconds to make the pick. Bo Nix?

With the No. 12 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Broncos select Bo Nix, QB

9:34: Six quarterbacks in 12 picks, and four will suck.

With the No. 13 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Raiders select Brock Bowers, TE

9:39: Michael Mayer, time to update your resume.

9:40: One trade. No defensive players. Falcons drafting Michael Penix for no good reason. This draft is insane.

9:41: Maybe the Saints will bail us out with Laiatu Latu.

9:44: Wow, the Falcons didn’t even discuss the pick with Kirk Cousins. Arthur Blank is the worst.

9:48: How does a team with a future NFL player win five games in four years?

9:52: Come on, Colts, take Latu!

With the No. 15 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Colts select Laiatu Latu, DE

10:01: Congrats to everyone who won with the Laiatu Latu bets! It sucks he didn’t go to the Falcons, but he was at least the first defensive player chosen.

10:02: It’s funny that people are talking about Latu’s medical when some teams flunked Dallas Turner for that reason.

10:03: OK, do we need a video montage about the military? This is why the broadcast falls so far behind.

With the No. 17 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Vikings select Dallas Turner, DE

10:09: Stupid Vikings didn’t take very long, so I couldn’t comment between picks. Anyway, I guess the Vikings didn’t get the memo that Dallas Turner was flagged medically.

10:12: It just occurred to me that they are playing the Beverly Hills Cop song because the Eddie Murphy character was from Detroit; not because Los Angeles was on the clock.

10:14: Amarius Mims is still available. I’d love this for my mock.

With the No. 18 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bengals select Amarius Mims, OT

10:18: Well, at least my mock isn’t a giant turd. Still, disappointing because of no Arizona trade and Arthur Blank’s stupidity.

With the No. 19 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Rams select Jared Verse, DE

10:26: Graham Barton would be nice for the Steelers, who desperately need a center.

With the No. 20 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Steelers select Troy Fautanu, OL

10:28: Ugh. Fautanu makes sense as a center, but Barton would have been safer. Not a bad pick, but risky because of the medical.

10:29: Not sure what Charles Davis was thinking by mentioning the name of Governor Dolores Umbridge.

10:31: If they have a Walter Payton Man of the Year, there should be an O.J. Simpson Turd of the Year award.

With the No. 21 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Dolphins select Chop Robinson, DE

10:37: Fun fact: Chop Robinson’s name used to be Porkchop Robinson, but he chopped the pork off. Wait, that sounded dirty.

10:38: No Georgia players for the Eagles, unless they want to reach.

With the No. 22 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Eagles select Quinyon Mitchell, CB

10:46: “The NFL has gone global.” Booooooooo!!!!!!

10:47: Roger Goodell will have players playing on the dark side of the moon by 2030.

10:49: I feel better about my 17/1 Eagles Super Bowl bet. Thanks, Howie!

10:50: I vividly remember the Lito Sheppard pick. I was an underclassman at Penn State. I can’t believe that was so long ago. Where did all the time go?

With the No. 23 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Jaguars select Brian Thomas, WR

10:54: Guessing Tyler Guyton or Graham Barton here. The Cowboys wanted Troy Fautanu.

10:56: Still only two trades. That’s the most surprising thing tonight aside from the Penix pick.

10:59: Lions trade up! Terrion Arnold?

11:04: Blah, blah, blah, kids play football, blah, blah, blah.

With the No. 24 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Lions select Terrion Arnold, CB

11:07: Butters pointed out to me that the Falcons drafted a left-handed quarterback named Michael. Oh man.

11:08: That’s cool that they gave Arnold the mic.

With the No. 25 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Packers select Jordan Morgan, OL

11:17: I doubt the Buccaneers thought Graham Barton would be here.

With the No. 26 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Buccaneers select Graham Barton, OL

11:19: Cardinals on the clock. I was told Jordan Morgan and Darius Robinson for them, but I don’t know if they knew that Johnny Newton and Kool-Aid McKinstry would still be on the board.

With the No. 27 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Cardinals select Darius Robinson, DT

11:24: Glad to get this one correct!

11:25: Chiefs moved up. Tyler Guyton?

With the No. 28 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Chiefs select Xavier Worthy, WR

11:28: Why trade up for a receiver with so many good ones available? Also, it’s funny that the Bills were supposed to trade up for a receiver, but they moved down with a team drafting a receiver.

11:33: Fast players added for Patrick Mahomes. Three-peat?

11:34: The Cowboys could have drafted Tyler Guyton at 24. Do they take him here?

11:35: Three more picks. We were waiting for this for so long, and it’s almost over.

With the No. 30 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Ravens select Nate Wiggins, CB

11:38: Another pick correct down here is nice.

11:40: I can’t get the next two correct because I had the 49ers drafting Chop Robinson and the Bills taking Brian Thomas. I did consider Johnny Newton to San Francisco though. Buffalo could go with another wideout, maybe Xavier Legette or Keon Coleman.

11:46: I don’t think I saw Pearsall in any first round.

11:47: Final pick. It’s over in a blur.

11:51: I guess Xavier Legette sold himself to the Panthers on the fourth visit to the team.
