2012 Fantasy Football Draft: Fantasy PPR Mock Draft

Aug. 23, 2012.

This is a 2012 Fantasy Football PPR Mock Draft I took part in with 11 other members of the forum. As usual, I'll have analysis of my picks, as well as the best and worst selections from each two rounds.

Just a heads up that we have 2012 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday evening. Check out the fantasy mock draft thread for details.

Oh, and you can see our chat log here.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: This was a tale of two rounds. I got the guy I praying to fall with my first selection, but then I failed to land the three players I was targeting at 2.05.

I was dreading that Ragnarok would take Tom Brady. If he did that, I don't know what I would have done. The 7-10 range is horrible this year. Maybe I would have taken a chance on Darren McFadden. Perhaps Julio Jones? Blegh.

In the second round, I wanted Andre Johnson, Julio Jones or Wes Welker. They all went right before me, so I took the best available player on my list in Brandon Marshall (see my 2012 Fantasy Football Cheat Sheet here). In hindsight, I wish I would have gone with a lesser player in Darren Sproles because of all the receiving depth.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: The aforementioned Welker-Jones-Johnson chain gets my vote. I also obviously like the Sproles pick.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I don't like Jimmy Graham and Drew Brees at the end of the first round, but I'm down on the Saints because of Bountygate ramifications.

Two other picks I didn't like were DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews. They're two injury-prone backs with very high bust rates.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: This is another pick I'd regret. I love Victor Cruz, but I'm thinking I should have selected Fred Jackson so my running back corps wouldn't be weak as balls. Antonio Gates, meanwhile, was a no-brainer after all of the running backs were plucked off the board.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I don't understand why Greg Jennings is falling into the third round of mock drafts, but he's a steal there. Fred Jackson, Ahmad Bradshaw and Cam Newton were all great value picks.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Adrian Peterson doesn't catch passes, so I can't support using a third-round selection on him in a PPR draft. A much worse pick is Michael Turner at the end of Round 4. He's done.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: See what I mean? I'm stuck with crap running backs. I was hoping that either Kevin Smith or Steve Johnson dropped to me at 5.08, but that didn't happen. With the clock ticking down, I panicked and chose Donald Brown. Yeeesh. Peyton Hillis would have been a better selection, but I was luckily able to land him at 6.05.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Demaryius Thomas, Steve Johnson, Eli Manning and Philip Rivers were atop my cheat sheet when they were chosen.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I'll give myself the worst pick of these two rounds. Donald Brown should not be taken so early.

Three other picks that I hated:

1. Chris Wells - Speaking of crappy running backs, Wells has not shown that he can stay healthy, so he went way too early.

2. Stevan Ridley - Round 6 is ridiculously early for Ridley in a PPR format. He's not even going to be in some game plans this year.

3. Vincent Jackson - Josh Freeman has not looked comfortable throwing the ball to Jackson this preseason.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: The Jaguars are saying that Maurice Jones-Drew won't be traded, but that's only natural. They'd lose leverage by announcing that they plan on dealing him. If Jones-Drew is sent packing, Rashad Jennings will be a steal in Round 7. And if not, there's a good chance Jones-Drew will suffer an injury because he's missed so much practice time.

As for Darrius Heyward-Bey, he's a nice flex option who has gone way later than he should in mock drafts. Go here to see more 2012 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: I would have considered Nate Washington at 7.08 had he fallen to me. He's really underrated. There were many other solid selections, like Jonathan Stewart, Malcom Floyd and Michael Bush.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: It's a bit early for Ben Roethlisberger, whose stats will drop because Todd Haley wants to run the ball more this year. I also hate Sancho's other pick; Robert Meachem has simply looked awful in both training camp and the preseason.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Let me copy-paste what I wrote last week because I'm lazy (plus, it still applies):

I'm only going to use Robert Griffin once this season, but he's a great backup to have just in case Tom Brady goes down. Plus, this pick reminds me of something forum member Injured Reserve did in one of my leagues last year. He had Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback and started him every week, but he also stashed Cam Newton on his bench. He never dealt Newton, reasoning that getting someone in return would upgrade his team a little but, but improve the other squad a lot. Well, maybe I can theoretically accomplish the same feat with Griffin.

Kendall Hunter is atop my 20 Fantasy Football Sleepers list.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Other players on the sleepers list include Ryan Williams, Danny Amendola (PPR only), Jacquizz Rodgers and Evan Royster. The steal of these two rounds, however, is Jason Witten.

Oh, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but nice value with Eagles QB No. 7.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: How was Roy Helu drafted before Evan Royster? Helu is nursing two sore Achilles' tendons. I'm not crazy about Carson Palmer either. He has played terribly this preseason.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Miguel Lobsterbush and Jared Cook should serve as good backups. Remember, I can use Cook as a flex if I'm desperate.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I really wanted Shane Vereen at 11.08. I was also going to consider Austin Collie, Cedric Benson and Mikel Leshoure. Oh well.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Randy Moss, Emmanuel Sanders and Ronnie Hillman get the nod here. Moss won't be used on many plays this year; Sanders could be screwed if Mike Wallace reports; while Hillman has barely practiced because of nagging injuries.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: I think Sidney Rice provides nice value. He's finally going to play this weekend. Kicker, defense, blah blah blah.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: I was really looking at Rashard Mendenhall, Vick Ballard and Ronnie Brown at 13.08. Mendenhall is a nice gamble, while Ballard would have been a nice handcuff for my reach of Donald Brown. Ronnie Brown, meanwhile, will start several games this year because Ryan Mathews can't stay healthy.

Love the upside with Jake Locker and Tim Tebow, by the way.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Nothing too glaring, but I don't think Doug Baldwin and Felix Jones are going to remain on fantasy rosters for very long this season.

My Fantasy Team:

QB - Tom Brady, Patriots
RB - Donald Brown, Colts
RB - Peyton Hillis, Chiefs
WR - Brandon Marshall, Bears
WR - Victor Cruz, Giants
RB/WR/TE - Darrius Heyward-Bey, Raiders WR
TE - Antonio Gates, Chargers
K - Matt Bryant, Falcons
DEF - Lions Defense

BN - Rashad Jennings, Jaguars RB
BN - Robert Griffin, Redskins QB
BN - Kendall Hunter, 49ers RB
BN - Michael Crabtree, 49ers WR
BN - Jared Cook, Titans TE
BN - Sidney Rice, Seahawks WR

I hate this team. I'm really strong at quarterback and tight end, and I'm decent at receiver, but my running backs are horrible - even worse than usual. I wish I had taken either Darren Sproles or Fred Jackson in the second or third rounds, respectively. That would have gotten me out of the Donald Brown mess.

In a year where rb's are ridiculously weak how in the hell does lynch fall to 4.7?

That is an absolute joke. I know theres a threat of suspension, but come on..this is a beast that could contend for the nfc rush title!

Seriously, Walt, what's wrong with you this year? Most of your drafts were terrible. You draft like you have the experience of someone who's only played one season of fantasy football before. No RBs and you take Cruz over Jackson? Then Gates over Lynch? Awful. Just awful.

The problem with your draft is that you didn't make any good picks.. You'll get them next time though.

My experience with ppr mocks so far this year has been that you can't go WR-WR in round 2 & 3, as any decent RB will be gone after that, any that are left in the 4th are 5th round picks at best, and you're left hoping one or two will go off either by having a great year or by assuming a starting roll. I don't think it's a good idea to hope for the best with any of these picks. I've had success going QB-WR or QB-TE first, usually can get Jackson or Bradshaw with the third, get a WR with the fourth or Gates if you didn't get a TE in the second, then get either a decent RB2 with the fifth.

This team really sucks, Walt. However, I have a feeling Brady is in for a MONSTER year. He should carry you to a respectable record.

Had you taken Gronk in the 2nd and either MJD, A. Brown or Maclin in the 4th then you would've had a great draft, Walt.

Wow, Walt, I always respected your judgement until I saw this draft. Not too sure I can trust your advice any more. I know WR's have gained value in recent years and in PPR, but RB's STILL are important. Donald Brown will be WORTHLESS with that line and the Dolts playing from behind all year. Your only hope is if Jamal Charles gets hurt again early, in which case Hillis will be an OK starter. Or if MJD holds out or goes down, then Jennings will be OK. You'd need a big trade or extreme luck on the Waiver Wire to be competitive with this team.

"He never dealt Newton, reasoning that getting someone in return would upgrade his team a little but, but improve the other squad a lot. Well, maybe I can theoretically accomplish the same feat with Griffin."
Or you can trade him for an actual running back lol
