2015 Combine: Bench Press Analysis – Tight Ends

By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • The consensus top tight end prospect, Minnesota’s Maxx Williams, managed only 17 reps. Williams (6-4, 249) is the same size as last year’s top tight end, Eric Ebron, yet Ebron had 24 reps. One comparison isn’t a big deal, but Williams fell short of a lot of other early-round tight end prospects from the past two years. Zach Ertz (24), Tyler Eifert (22), Troy Niklas (27), Austin Seferian-Jenkins (20) and Jace Amaro (28) all did significantly better than Williams.

  • Two years ago, the best total on the bench press came from Vance McDonald (31 reps). Last year, Joe Don Duncan ripped off 35. This year the honor goes to Louisville’s Gerald Chrisitian with 28 reps. This provides further evidence that is a weak class of tight ends.

  • Miami tight end Clive Walford recorded 20 reps. Walford (6-4, 251) has a thick build, and I thought he would have produced a higher total in the mid-20s.

  • Maxx Williams wasn’t alone with lower than expected total. Rutgers’ Tyler Kroft (6-6, 246) matched him at 17 reps. Kroft could use more strength for the next level.

  • Two quality showings came from Ohio State’s Jeff Heuerman (6-5, 254) and Penn State’s Jesse James (6-7, 261) as they each had 26 reps. Heuerman and James could be proving to be worthy of consideration as Y (blocking) tight ends for the NFL.

  • Oklahoma tight end Blake Bell (6-6, 252) came in last of all the tight ends who participated with 14 reps. Bell played quarterback for the majority of his collegiate career, so it is understandable to a degree that his total would be lower. However, 14 is lower than any tight end from this year or last year’s group (Colt Lyerla with 15 reps was the lowest in 2014).
