2015 NFL Combine: Weigh-In Recap – Defensive Linemen
By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • The media consensus for the top defensive prospect is USC lineman Leonard Williams. Williams was just as advertised at 6-foot-5, 302 pounds, and he carries his weight well. He also had longer arms at 34 5/8 inches. It would be surprising if Williams didn’t perform well at the Combine.

  • Oregon has produced a lot of good athletes with size and speed. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead continued the trend by checking in at 6-foot-7, 292 pounds with 33-inch arms. Armstead has the ability to play inside or outside, and he should be a standout in the field drills.

  • At the Senior Bowl, Washington defensive tackle Danny Shelton celebrated being 343 pounds at 6- foot-2. He had dropped weight and was pleased with the result. Shelton continued to trim down, as he checked in at 339 pounds. That should help him in the 40 and the field work. However, Shelton may end up playing around 350 in the NFL.

  • One of the surprising weighins came from Clemson’s Grady Jarrett. He had a good week at the Senior Bowl at 6-foot, 288 pounds. In less than a month, Jarrett has put on a lot of weight on, as he weighed in at 304 pounds. It will be interesting to see if that weight helps or hurts him in the weight room and field drills.

  • Florida State defensive tackle Eddie Goldman checked in as expected. Goldman (6-4, 336) is a thick nose tackle who has some surprising explosion off the snap for a big lineman. With a crowded group of nose tackles like Jordan Phillips and Shelton, Goldman could use a strong Combine performance.

  • Oklahoma nose tackle Jordan Phillips (6-5, 329) is similar to Goldman with a rare combination of size and speed. Phillips also has long arms (34 3/4 inches), thus he could be a candidate to move around as a 3-4 defensive end and nose tackle. With a good Combine, Phillips could end up being a first-round pick.

  • Another nose tackle prospect who isn’t as highly rated as Goldman or Phillips is UCLA’s Ellis McCarthy. McCarthy was a massive 6-foot-5, 338 pounds. It will be interesting to see where his conditioning is in the field work.

  • LSU defensive end Danielle Hunter (6-5, 252) was a surprising early entry in the draft considering he didn’t have much sack production last year. Clearly, Hunter needs to add weight for the NFL, and if he’s unable to, he’ll have to move to outside linebacker.

  • One of the most surprising weigh-ins came from Florida State defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr. He was listed in the mid-290s, but he checked in at 6-foot-3, 279 pounds. Edwards may have dropped weight to run fast in the 40-yard dash and be explosive in the field drills. However, that size makes him more of a defensive end rather than a tackle. Considering Edwards hasn’t been a big sack producer, that could hurt his draft stock.

  • Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown was 6-foot-2, 319 pounds, and he is a versatile lineman for a 4-3 defense, as he could fit as a three-technique or a nose tackle. That should help Brown to be a first-round pick.

  • Arkansas defensive tackle Darius Philon had a good weigh-in. He had been listed in the 270s, but that appears to have been long outdated, as Philon was 6-foot-1, 298 pounds at the Combine. Philon is a sleeper who was a good player in the SEC last year and could be a good value pick on the second day or midrounds.

  • Oregon State edge defender Obum Gwacham showed that he has to play linebacker unless he can add a lot of weight. Gwacham (6-5, 246) is way too small for defensive end.
