2011 Fantasy Football Rankings - Tight Ends (Sept. 5):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-40

  1. Tony Gonzalez, TE, Falcons. Bye: 8.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Tony Gonzalez saw eight targets in a half of action at Pittsburgh, but caught four balls for only 26 yards. Two incompletions were the result of Gonzalez being unable to get off the ground. I'm not kidding when I say this, but he may have a 2-inch vertical leap right now. It just didn't look like he could jump at all. He's also having trouble separating; he needed to shove off a defender in the end zone to catch a touchdown. He was whistled for an offensive pass interference penalty.

AUG. 20 UPDATE: Tony Gonzalez is finished. He saw one target and caught it for five yards. As he was running, it looked like he needed a cane. Avoid this guy in all leagues, save for perhaps touchdown-only formats.

Tony Gonzalez is done. His yards-per-catch average dipped below 10 for the first time in his career last year, as he looked slow and sluggish as the season progressed. He still has some value because he'll get end zone looks, but don't count on him unless you're in a touchdown-only league.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 59 catches. 560 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 92.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 151.

  2. Dustin Keller, TE, Jets. Bye: 8.
AUG. 22 UPDATE: Dustin Keller led the Jets with four receptions for 73 yards in the exhibition victory against Cincinnati. He had a nice game, but I still wouldn't draft him. He's just too damn inconsistent.

AUG. 7 UPDATE: With Derrick Mason aboard, someone on the Jets is going to lose targets. That will likely be Dustin Keller, who wasn't much of a fantasy factor to begin with.

Dustin Keller had 55 receptions for 687 yards and five touchdowns last year, but most of his production - including all of his touchdowns - came in the first four weeks of the season. Keller will be a bigger part of the offense in 2011 if the Jets can't re-sign either Santonio Holmes or Braylon Edwards.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 54 catches. 650 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 89.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 143.

  3. Heath Miller, TE, Steelers. Bye: 11.
AUG. 10 UPDATE: Heath Miller has really been focusing a lot on blocking during training camp. Considering the status of Pittsburgh's miserable offensive line, it's easy to see why. Miller's stats will be down this year.

Heath Miller had a disappointing 2010 campaign, catching just 42 balls for 512 yards and two touchdowns. The reason for his decline was that he had to stay in and block because of all the injuries Pittsburgh incurred to its offensive line. If the Steelers can retain Willie Colon, Miller should rebound with a solid 2011 season.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 550 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 85.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 135.

  4. Evan Moore, TE, Browns. Bye: 5.
AUG. 22 UPDATE: Evan Moore hauled in all three of his targets from Colt McCoy in the exhibition defeat to the Lions for 40 yards and two scores. I really like Moore, but it's hard to get too excited about this because Ben Watson didn't play. Watson is McCoy's primary tight end, as Moore is a poor blocker.

Evan Moore is a talented pass-catching tight end, but can't block whatsoever. He caught only 16 balls last year (322 yards) because of a groin injury. He'll be a bigger part of the offense in 2011.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 40 catches. 550 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 85.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 125.

  5. Todd Heap, TE, Cardinals. Bye: 6.
Todd Heap was actually a decent fantasy option last year, as he caught 40 balls for 599 yards and five touchdowns in 13 games. However, he's still a major injury risk.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 43 catches. 530 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 83.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 126.

  6. Ed Dickson, TE, Ravens. Bye: 5.
Ed Dickson saw five targets in the exhibition win over the Redskins, catching three balls for 57 yards. While Dennis Pitta stood out in Week 1, it's now clear that Dickson is Joe Flacco's favorite tight end. I still wouldn't draft either though, as there are so many better options.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 45 catches. 550 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 79.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 124.

  7. Travis Beckum, TE, Giants. Bye: 7.
The Raiders have signed Kevin Boss, so Travis Beckum is projected as New York's starting tight end. I wouldn't recommend drafting him, but he's worth monitoring as a potential waiver-wire acquisition.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 38 catches. 450 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 75.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 113.

  8. Fred Davis, TE, Redskins. Bye: 5.
AUG. 14 UPDATE: I was disappointed to see that Fred Davis saw just two targets from Rex Grossman in the exhibition opener against Pittsburgh. With Chris Cooley out, I imagined that Davis would play a larger role. It's only been one game, but Davis' sole 11-yard reception indicates that you shouldn't bother with him as a late-round flier.

With Chris Cooley hobbled by a knee injury, Fred Davis is taking advantage of his opportunity. Davis showed up to training camp in incredible shape. He would be a great sleeper tight end if the Redskins had at least a mediocre quarterback.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 40 catches. 490 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 73.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 113.

  9. Anthony Fasano, TE, Dolphins. Bye: 5.
Anthony Fasano would be a functional fantasy tight end if Chad Henne knew how to throw touchdown passes. Instead, Fasano is just an ordinary TE2.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 37 catches. 490 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 67.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 104.

  10. Julius Thomas, TE, Broncos. Bye: 6.
Rookie tight end Julius Thomas led the Broncos with 70 receiving yards off four receptions against the Seahawks. Orton targeted him thrice, while the other look came from Tim Tebow. Thomas is an extremely athletic player whose role will grow as the season progresses. He's someone to watch out for in 2012.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 40 catches. 480 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 66.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 106.

  11. Visanthe Shiancoe, TE, Vikings. Bye: 9.
Donovan McNabb likes utilizing tight ends, so Visanthe Shiancoe could benefit. The lockout length helps Shiancoe too; Kyle Rudolph won't be much of a factor early on.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 37 catches. 400 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 58.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 95.

  12. Chris Cooley, TE, Redskins. Bye: 5.
AUG. 14 UPDATE: Mike Shanahan told the media this weekend that Chris Cooley will miss at least the next few weeks because of his knee injury. "At least" being the key words there. Shanahan has no idea when Cooley will be available. He's undraftable.

AUG. 6 UPDATE: It's not looking good for Chris Cooley. The PPR-friendly tight end has been limping around training camp, and there's speculation that his knee hasn't healed. He'll be dropped in my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings.

If Chris Cooley can post solid numbers (77-849-3) with bums like Donovan McNabb and Rex Grossman as his quarterback, he should be OK with John Beck at the helm. Just don't expect (m)any touchdowns.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 36 catches. 420 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 54.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 90.

  13. Scott Chandler, TE, Bills. Bye: 7.
AUG. 15 UPDATE: Scott Chandler was targeted thrice as he caught two balls for 13 yards in the exhibition premiere against the Bears. It looks like he could be one of Ryan Fitzpatrick's primary "weapons" (using the term "weapons" very loosely), but don't expect much. He's probably not even a TE2.

The reason the Bills didn't pick a tight end in the 2011 NFL Draft? Scott Chandler - a fourth-year player with only one career reception. Makes sense to me.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 35 catches. 310 yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 49.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 84.

  14. Kyle Rudolph, TE, Vikings. Bye: 9.
Rookie quarterbacks tend to depend on tight ends, and Kyle Rudolph is a very talented one. Unfortunately, Minnesota's offense will be stagnant, so Rudolph won't have many red zone opportunities.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 32 catches. 350 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 47.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 79.

  15. Dennis Pitta, TE, Ravens. Bye: 5.
Second-year tight end Dennis Pitta received two of Joe Flacco's six targets in the preseason opener at Philadelphia. Pitta actually ended up with four receptions for 47 yards, including an impressive 27-yard grab from Flacco in which he made the catch over an Eagle defender. With Todd Heap and Derrick Mason gone, it's certainly possible that Pitta could emerge as Flacco's favorite target. We'll definitely know for sure in the next couple of weeks, but keep Pitta in the back of your head for now.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 22 catches. 250 yards. 2 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 37.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 59.

  16. Tony Scheffler, TE, Lions. Bye: 9.
Tony Scheffler is the No. 2 tight end in Detroit. Unless Brandon Pettigrew gets hurt, Scheffler won't produce much.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 28 catches. 240 yards. 1 total TD.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 30.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 58.

  17. John Carlson, TE, Seahawks. Bye: 6.
AUG. 3 UPDATE: The Seahawks signed Zach Miller, so John Carlson is no longer a factor in fantasy football. Not that he was much of a factor to begin with.

Matt Hasselbeck must be the worst fantasy football player ever because he called John Carlson a "fantasy sleeper" last May. Carlson caught only 31 balls for 318 yards and one touchdown. He's been a huge disappointment, and I can't see his numbers improving substantially considering the mess Seattle has at the quarterback position.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 20 catches. 210 yards. 1 total TD.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 27.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 47.

  18. Tony Moeaki, TE, Chiefs. Bye: 6.
Out for the year with a knee injury.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 0 catches. 0 yards. 0 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 0.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 0.

It really is rare to laotce a professional person in whom you may have some faith. In the world nowadays, nobody absolutely cares about showing others the way in this issue. How fortunate I am to have now found a real wonderful web site as this. It truly is people like you exactly who make a true difference these days through the suggestions they talk about.

Aaron Hernandez obviously has had a better pre season than Rob Gronkowski this year I don't know why you have him rated lower he should be top ten before you know it, not number 11 more like #5 when Antonio Gates get out for the year and Hernandez already has 500 yards receiving with 5 TD's and

@Walt
Why have you not downgraded Gates. His injuries are obviously more severe than we once thought.

@Charles,

About 4 weeks ago, I posted almost the same thing that Williamson is saying, just minus the actual numbers.

After the preseason game the other night, it's also lookin like Burleson might see an uptick in targets, too, which would obviously eat into Pettigrew's #'s even more...

For Kevin Boss, you wrote "The good news is that the Giants didn't pick a tight end in the 2011 NFL Draft." No, but the Raiders did pick Richard Gordon in the sixth round.

Walter, are you sure about Pettigrew? I recently read this about him, and it kind of worries me. From Rotoworld:

Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson suggests Brandon Pettigrew's 2010 receiving numbers "might inflate his true value as a receiving option."
It's valid point. The inflation was most apparent with a weak-armed Shaun Hill filling in for Matthew Stafford. In 10 games as Hill's dump-off receiver, Pettigrew averaged 5.6 receptions and 61.5 yards. In three games started by Stafford, a more aggressive downfield passer, Pettigrew averaged just 2.0 receptions and 10.7 yards. It's fair to expect a decline in production this year.

I'm so anti-Gates this year it's not even funny. Somebody look up the numbers on Ben Coates... similar size, similar domincance in fantasy, and once he hit 30, his production steeply declined.

I think we're lookin at the beginning of that here with Gates. These plantar fasciitis injuries are grueling for a man of his size.

Watch out for rookie Julius Thomas in Denver. Not saying he should be your fantasy starter or anything, but he has looked great in camp and should be worthy of a late round sleeper TE2... and definitely deserves a top 20 ranking here based on pure upside.

I feel like TEs are going way early this year do you think a Greg Olsen-Jimmy Graham combo is respectable enough if you loaded up on other positions early and end up in a jam?

Antonio Gates is on the chargers PUP list, not off to a good start, his planter fasciitis has returned early on in camp. I think you should move him down on your list, its not looking good for him to complete a whole season.
