2016 Combine: Bench Press Analysis – Tight Ends

By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • For a point of comparison, here are some of the measurements of other recent tight end prospects:

  • Vance McDonald: 31 reps
  • Jace Amaro: 28 reps
  • Troy Niklas: 27 reps
  • Eric Ebron: 24 reps
  • Zach Ertz: 24 reps
  • Tyler Eifert: 22 reps
  • Austin Seferian-Jenkins: 20 reps
  • Clive Walfords: 20 reps
  • Maxx Williams: 17 reps

  • The consensus top tight end prospect is Arkansas’ Hunter Henry, but like Maxx Williams last year, Henry had a disappointing showing on the bench press. Henry (6-5, 250) produced only 13 reps of 225 pounds. If the rest of the Combine goes well for Henry, it shouldn’t mean very much, but Henry should look to improve on that total at his pro day.

  • Stanford tight end Austin Hooper did better than Henry with 19 reps. However, Hooper’s total is also on the low end when comparing him to other early-round tight ends taken in the early rounds of recent drafts. If Hooper (6-4, 254) can add a few more reps at his pro day, he would be in line with those other prospects.

  • The leader of all the tight ends was UTSA’s David Morgan (6-2, 262), who posted 29 reps. He also is the heaviest tight end at the Combine.

  • The lowest total came from UCLA’s Thomas Duarte. However, Duarte (6-2, 231) is a converted wide receiver who is significantly smaller than the other other tight end prospects.

  • Another disappointing total came from Ohio State’s Nick Vannett with 17 reps. Vannett (6-6, 257) is a blocking tight end, and one would have thought that he would have been able to reach 20 reps.

  • Three tight end prospects didn’t participate, but among them was South Carolina’s Jerell Adams. Adams could be the third tight end drafted. The other two who didn’t partake were Western Kentucky’s Tyler Higbee and N.C. State’s David Grinnage.
