2016 Combine: Weigh-In Recap – Linebackers

By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • If healthy, UCLA outside linebacker Myles Jack would have been a beast at the Combine because he is phenomenal athlete. At the Combine, Jack impressed at the weigh-in as he measured 6-foot-1, 245-pounds with 33 5/8-inch arms. Jack hit his projected height but was 15 pounds heavier. That could cause some teams to project Jack to playing middle or outside linebacker. Having that flexibility makes Jack even more dynamic and valuable. The future top-10 pick, Jack was a star of the weigh-in for the linebackers.

  • The other star linebacker coming off a knee tear is Notre Dame outside linebacker Jaylon Smith. His weigh-in was the opposite of Jack, as Smith wasn’t as heavy, and it could limit his position flexibility for the NFL. Smith was 6-foot-2, 223-pounds, and that was about 12 pounds less than expected. Below 230 pounds, Smith will have to be an outside linebacker and doesn’t have the bulk to be a middle linebacker in a 4-3 defense. Of course, Smith’s medical checkup was critical, but this weigh-in could hurt his draft projection.

  • There was some debate about whether USC’s Su’A Cravens should be a safety or outside linebacker in the NFL. At 6-foot-1, 226 pounds, Cravens is a better fit at linebacker for the pros. Some teams might move him around, but in the passing-driven NFL, Cravens would be better in coverage at linebacker.

  • Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland weighed in at 259 pounds at the Senior Bowl. A month later, Ragland’s weight is back where it should be for middle linebacker at 247-pounds. It will be interesting to see if Ragland maintains this weight at his pro day and in the pre-draft workouts. Still, Ragland is a thumper linebacker who will be an asset on the inside or outside in the middle of a defense.

  • The continuous tweener issues that surround Oklahoma outside linebacker Eric Striker won’t come to an end after the Combine. Striker (5-11, 227) is an undersized outside linebacker who is at his best blitzing off the edge as a 3-4 defender. However, his body type is more of a safety. Striker needs a strong Combine to help his stock.

  • Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright has been working to trim weight of his frame. Wright showed up at 6-foot, 239 pounds with short arms of 30 1/2 inches. Team sources don’t expect Wright to be a Combine star, but they like his tape and production to make him a second-day pick.

  • Ohio State speedy outside linebacker Darron Lee hit the numbers he needed to at 6-foot-1, 232 pounds. It was important that Lee didn’t weigh in the 220s. Lee has the athletic ability to light up the Combine.

  • Georgia outside linebacker Leonard Floyd (6-6, 244) showed versatile size, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the athletic Floyd stars in the field work. Floyd has the frame where he could add more muscle to battle offensive tackles.

  • LSU linebacker Deion Jones has some fans in the draft pundits, but teams have weight concerns with Jones. At 6-foot-1, 222 pounds, Jones reinforced those concerns at the Combine. While he was three pounds heavier than he was at the Senior Bowl, Jones still is very undersized for the NFL. Teams feel that Jones is limited to being a sub linebacker in passing situations.
