2010 NBA Summer League Recap – July 6

Welcome to the NBA, Daniel Orton. In his Summer League debut, Orton was ejected after getting into a scuffle with the Pacers’ Josh McRoberts. The Magic rookie finished with three points (1-of-8 from the field), three boards and five fouls in more than 13 minutes. And you wonder why he fell to the 29th spot of the 2010 NBA Draft.

It’s far too early to say, “I told you so,” but I have been high on Lance Stephenson all season and felt the Pacers got one of the steals of the 2010 NBA Draft with the 40th pick. Stephenson had 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting while dishing out four assists and only committing two turnovers as he spent a good portion of Indy’s game running the point which is interesting since the Pacers badly need a floor leader of the future. “Born Ready” is a great creator and slasher, and it will be interesting to watch and see if Indiana keeps running the offense through him in almost a Tyreke Evans-like role through the rest of summer league.

Ladies and gentlemen, a B.J. Mullens sighting. He only played in 13 games this past season for the Thunder and looked as if he was going to be a bigger project than originally expected. The former first-round pick put up a day-high 24 points in Orlando. Oklahoma CIty has to be thrilled that he showed some growth on Day 1.

Luke Harangody is not going to wow anyone with his athleticism, but he has a natural feel for the game and displayed that for the Celtics. He hit 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and looks in great shape as he is far more toned and slim than he was at Notre Dame. Boston could have gotten a great pick at No. 52.

Second-year players have an obvious advantage in Summer League compared to the rookies. Guys like Terrence Williams, Jrue Holiday, James Harden and Gerald Henderson looked like vets on the floor. All but Henderson played major minutes last season so the Bobcats have to hope Henderson ready to be more of an impact player during his sophomore campaign.

The No. 2 and 3 overall picks met head-to-head as Evan Turner’s 76ers took on Derrick Favors and the Nets. Turner had a solid all-around outing posting 12 points, eight boards, and four assists while Favors had eight points and nine rebounds. The two players did combine for 13 fouls though (players cannot foul out in Summer League.)

From the “remember me” files… former Illinois big man James Augustine capitalized on his playing time for the Jazz, dropping 20 points in 21 minutes. For a team likely in need of some depth inside since Carlos Boozer is likely to leave via free agency, that is a great way to get the front office’s attention.
