During the 2021 NFL Draft process, Northern Iowa offensive tackle Spencer Brown created a buzz, and he ended up being a third-round pick of the Buffalo Bills. It looks like in back-to-back draft classes the Northern Iowa Panthers will have NFL teams interested in an offensive tackle watching their program closely thanks to the presence of Trevor Penning. In speaking to some NFL advance scouts, Penning received the highest preseason grade of any offensive line prospect for the 2022 NFL Draft.
Penning certainly passes the eyeball test, with the preseason measurements from scouts having him at 6-foot-7, 329 pounds. Along with good height and weight, their preseason measurements have him with 34.78-inch arms and 10.18-inch hands. They also estimate him having good speed for a massive offensive tackle, projecting a 40-yard dash time of 5.20 seconds.
It will be interesting to see where Northern Iowa plays Penning now that Brown is in the NFL. Penning would also benefit from performing well against better competition at an all-star game like the Senior Bowl or East-West Shrine. Having a normal draft process with an NFL scouting combine and pre-draft workouts could also benefit Penning by giving him additional opportunities to show off his skill set. A lot could change during the course of the season and across the events leading up to the draft, but Penning is off to a fantastic start, having made a good first impression on advance scouts.
