Quan Martin, Christian Gonzalez Draw Rave Reviews

The 2023 NFL Draft is viewed as not having an elite talent at cornerback or safety, but containing some quality prospects and good depth that extends into the mid-rounds for secondary talent. After the defensive backs worked out at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine on Friday night, WalterFootball.com surveyed team sources about which players helped themselves. The two most-common names returned were Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez and Illinois safety Jartavius 'Quan' Martin.

Gonzalez is not a surprise as a workout warrior and basically confirmed what teams expected. His excellent combination of size, speed, and fluid athleticism was seen on tape, so the combine served to validate the earlier evaluation. Even though Gonzalez has a great skill set, he has not been a lock as a top-10 prospect for the 2023 NFL Draft. Teams said they didn't like the lack of fight, competitiveness, and finesse they saw on tape.

Martin posted excellent numbers, including a 4.46-second time in the 40-yard dash, a 44-inch vertical jump, an 11-foot-1 broad jump, and a very smooth appeareance in the team drills. Some team sources raved about his senior year tape, but were disappointed with his quiet week at the Senior Bowl. Martin rebounded with a tremendous combine that showed explosive speed and some fluidity in the field work.

Team sources said they think the combine could help to push Gonzalez into the top 10 of the 2023 NFL Draft and Martin could be a riser on the second day of the 2023 NFL Draft.
