After new Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer signed his former quarterback Tim Tebow, many in the NFL media dismissed the signing as a gimmick and a favor to a former player. Tebow helped Meyer win two National Championships at Florida and the two remained close in the years after Tebow entered the NFL in 2010. Tebow didn't stick in the pros as a quarterback, and after playing minor league baseball for a few years, Tebow is back in the league, now competing at tight end. While many in the media have dismissed Tebow, sources with the Jaguars say Tebow has a legit shot to make the final roster.
"No, I think he has a real shot to make the team." said a member of the Jaguars staff. "It isn't a gimmick or a favor. I think he could be a core special teamer."
Excellent special teams units were an emphasis and a constant throughout Meyer's time with Florida and Ohio State. Some league sources say for special teams, they want players with S.T.I. - speed, toughness and instincts. The athletic former quarterback Tebow certainly fits those criteria.
Another factor working in Tebow's advantage is the Jaguars being thin at the tight end position. They do not have an established veteran starter on the roster.
"We've been impressed with Luke Farrell," said the Jaguars source. "He looks the part, and he's off to a good start."
After Ferrell, Tebow is competing for two or three roster spots with a group of late-round picks and undrafted free agents.
It isn't lost on the Jaguars that Tebow could help the team in the locker room. His work ethic is legendary, and he has been known to be a great teammate. Sources with the Jaguars say Tebow will be a good outlet for rookie franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Tebow has been through a lot of ups and downs as a player, and the organization feels he will be a good influence for Lawrence. Jacksonville also knows the media's obsession with Tebow could benefit Lawrence with less requests of the rookie, and the attention being on Tebow could help Lawrence to avoid distractions and focus on football.
The combination of all these factors, and selling tickets in Tebow's hometown of Jacksonville, have Jaguars sources saying Tebow has a legit shot to make their final 53-man roster.
