Chargers Pass on Herbert, Who Becomes A Patriot - 4.02 Update
Published at 3/29/2020 4:16:56 PM

Let's see what happens if the Chargers pass on Herbert at 6, shall we? What happens to Jordan Love later in the round? This is going off my first mock, where the first 5 picks are the same. Round 2 is included, and I've made several changes. Have a look.

Round 1

Picks 1-16
1. Bengals: Joe Burrow, Quarterback, LSU

The Bengals make the right pick...

2. Redskins: Chase Young, 3-4 Outside Linebacker, Ohio State

As do the Redskins.

4. Giants: Tristan Wirfs, Offensive Guard, Iowa

The G-Men still get a hogmollie, one with a 99th-percentile athletic testing grade at his position.

5. Lions: Jeff Okudah, Cornerback, Ohio State

The Lions move down to 5 and still get their guy, plus the extra draft capital from the Dolphins.

7. Panthers: Derrick Brown, 3-4 Defensive End, Auburn

The only way the Panthers can get a 2021 1st, in my mind, is if a team has to move up quite a bit to #7 overall. That wouldn't apply to the Jaguars, who are scheduled to pick at #9. But it does apply to New England, scheduled at #23. So here we go, Herbert becomes a Patriot, and it turns out that he doesn't fall far at all. As compensation, Carolina gets #23 overall (obviously), the 2021 1st rounder, and pick #98 overall in this year's draft (the first compensatory pick that the Patriots have).

12. Raiders: CeeDee Lamb, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma

The Raiders might prefer Lamb to Jeudy, but with either guy I'd have to believe that Jon Gruden would be happy.
