2016 NFL Mock Draft by ColinKalt - 3.18
Published at 4/18/2016 12:03:26 AM

Hello, my name is Colin Kaltenecker. I currently attend The Ohio State University majoring in Physical Activity & Education and minoring in General Business. I want to have a future in scouting or coaching at the college and/or professional level. This is a quick write up so any comments or critiques are greatly encouraged and appreciated. I used team's needs, teams' rankings, prospects' rank, and personal opinion to come up with my mock draft. Thank you to football outsiders, drafttek, walter football, and nfl draft scout to help me find my information. Every week I will add another round or another write-up. Round 1: Each Team will have their needs and last year's rankings, & player awards. Round 2: Team Needs, website reviews, & awards

Round 1

1. Rams: Jared Goff, Quarterback, California

Team Needs: QB, WR, C, DB, & FB
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-29th, Pass-31st, Run-14th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-7th, Pass-8th, Run-7th

I think they are the winners of the trade. LA knows what they want and that is a quarterback. Rams will pick Jared Goff because he has more experience throwing the football and a local boy. He will know how to handle the big stage.

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: Matt Ryan
Combine Grade: 6.56

Awards/Highlights:
First-team All-Pac-12 (2015)
2015 Armed Forces Bowl MVP
Pac-12 Offensive Player of The Week (Twice in 2015)

2. Eagles: Carson Wentz, Quarterback, North Dakota State

Team Needs: RB, OL, DT, DE, OLB & QB.
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-26th, Pass-26th, Run-17th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-17th, Pass-14th, Run-28th

Eagles will draft their franchise QB here. They traded up here to get Goff or Wentz. I believe Wentz falls.

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: Blake Bortles
Combine Grade: 6.5

Awards/Highlights:
2× NCAA Division I Championship Game Most Outstanding Player (2015, 2016)
CoSIDA Football Academic All-American of the Year (2015)
2× CoSIDA Division I First-team Academic All-American (2014–2015)

3. Chargers: Jalen Ramsey, Cornerback, Florida State

Team Needs: DL, S, TE, WR, OL & DE.
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-15th, Pass-8th, Run-31st
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-28th, Pass-22nd, Run-32nd

Chargers need all the help on defense they can get. With the 3rd pick, I could see going after one of these three players: Bosa, Jack, or Ramsey. San Diego would draft Ramsey because of Weddle leaving.

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: Sean Smith
Combine Grade: 6.83

Awards/Highlights:
Consensus All-American (2015)
Second-team AP All-American (2014)
ACC Champion (2013, 2014)
BCS National Champion (2014)
First-team All-ACC (2014)

4. Cowboys: Ezekiel Elliott, Running Back, Ohio State

Team Needs: CB, RB, DT, DB, & QB.
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-31st, Pass-32nd, Run-9th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-19th, Pass-17th, Run-29th

Cowboys could trade down considering they need defensive line help along with a running back. Dallas could draft Ramsey, or Hargreaves because of the defensive back need but there are still question marks about both. They will go this the flashy player.

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: Edgerrin James
Combine Grade: 7.2

Awards/Highlights:
Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year (2015)
Ameche-Dayne Running Back of the Year (2015)
Unanimous First Team All-Big Ten (2015)
8th place in Heisman Trophy voting (2015)
James E. Sullivan Award (2015)
CFP National Champion (2015)
CFP National Championship Offensive MVP (2015)
Sugar Bowl Champion (2015)
Sugar Bowl Offensive MVP (2015)
Big Ten Champion (2014)

5. Jaguars: Joey Bosa, Defensive End, Ohio State

Team Needs: CB, C, OL, OLB, & DB
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-21st, Pass-20th, Run-28th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-26th, Pass-31st, Run-17th

Jaguars would love if Ramsey or Hargreaves would fall to them. Jacksonville needs defensive backfield help but would love to add a pass rusher who is versatile. Gus Bradley needs his defense to finally develop or else he will be canned. The offense came on late last year but the pass defense couldn't cover a cold. Drafting Bosa would allow Bradley to use him in multiple roles to rush the pass. This pick is a match make in heaven for both parties.

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: Ryan Kerrigan
Combine Grade: 6.72

Awards/Highlights:
College All-American (2015)
CFP National Champion (2015)
Sugar Bowl Champion (2015)
Big Ten Champion (2014)
Unanimous All-American (2014)
2× First Team All-Big Ten (2014, 2015)
Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year (2014)
2× Smith–Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year (2014, 2015)
Freshman All-American (2013)
Freshman All-Big Ten (2013)

6. Ravens: Laremy Tunsil, Offensive Tackle, Ole Miss

Team Needs: OL, CB, OLB, WR, & DL.
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-20th, Pass-21st, Run-18th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-20th, Pass-25th, Run-12th

They could go after a cornerback or pass rusher. However, with the signing of Mike Wallace I think they are going to focus on protecting Joe Flacco. Tunsil has great size and is the best tackle in the draft. This pick will fill a need at the tackle position, address part of the offensive woes, and add young potential.

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: Tyron Smith
Combine Grade: 7.72

Awards/Highlights:
2× All-SEC First Team (2014, 2015)
All-SEC Second Team (2013)
Sporting News Freshman All-American (2013)
USA Today High School All-American (2012)

7. 49ers: DeForest Buckner, Defensive End, Oregon

Team Needs: QB, WR, OL, DL, ILB, & DT
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-28th, Pass-30th, Run-21st
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-27th, Pass-30th, Run-23rd

49ers are giving Chip Kelly the chance to put his stamp on the offense but he will have to wait later in the draft or tade pout of this pick. Since, Goff will be gone, 49ers will pick best available. The best available will be DeForest Buckner from Oregon. Oh yeah, there is that Oregon tie..

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: Calais Campbell
Combine Grade: 7.23

Awards/Highlights:
All-American (2015)
Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year (2015)
First-team All-Pac-12 (2015)
Second-team All-Pac-12 (2014)
Pac-12 Champion (2014)

8. Browns: Ronnie Stanley, Offensive Tackle, Notre Dame

Team Needs: QB, WR, OT, CB, OL, & DL.
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-27th, Pass-27th, Run-20th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-29th, Pass-27th, Run-26th

The Browns need offensive line help and a quarterback. At this pick, its better not to over value a qb. They will find a replacement to Schwartz. Peter King believes the Browns will select Notre Dame offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley at No. 8 in his latest mock draft.

April 26, 2016- http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/2016/04/peter-king-has-browns-taking-ot-ronnie-stanley-trading-back-into-first-round-for-qb-again/

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: Lane Johnson
Combine Grade: 6.7

Awards/Highlights:
Consensus All-American (2015)
Polynesian Player of the Year

9. Buccaneers: Vernon Hargreaves, Cornerback, Florida

Team Needs: CB, OT, S, OL, & DE.
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-18th, Pass-17th, Run-11th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-18th, Pass-26th, Run-9th

Buccaneers need will to be better against the pass. So they will draft a defensive back. He's a stud cornerback but there are some red flags about his height and frame. Plus, when he gives up a completion its for big yards.

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: Joe Haden
Combine Grade: 6.6

Awards/Highlights:
Consensus All-American (2015)
First-team All-American (2014)
3× First-team All-SEC (2013, 2014, 2015)
According to NFL.com:

10. Giants: Darron Lee, Outside Linebacker, Ohio State

Team Needs: ILB, RB, QB, & OL,
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-19th, Pass-18th, Run-23rd
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-30th, Pass-28th, Run-21st

Giants will follow the same philosophy as the Eagles with taking the best defensive player. Darron Lee can play inside or outside backer. This pick and Ramsey pick I'm the least confident in because of their variance potential and athleticism with other prospects.

According to NFL.com:
NFL COMPARISON: Zach Brown
Combine Grade: 6.07

Awards/Highlights:
Fiesta Bowl Champion (2016)
CFP National Champion (2015)
Sugar Bowl Champion (2015)
Big Ten Champion (2014)

11. Bears: Leonard Floyd, Outside Linebacker, Georgia

Team Needs: DE, OL, CB, & DL
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-10th, Pass-13th, Run-5th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-31st, Pass-23rd, Run-31st

Floyd is getting a lot of love from the media and experts but I'm not completely sold on him. However, he had an amazing combine. He was a top performer in each of his categories. He could be pick by the Bears because they need a pass rusher to attack the quarterback.

According to NFL.com:
NFL COMPARISON: Eli Harold
Combine Grade: 6.5

Awards/Highlights:
Team-MVP (2014)
Freshman-team All-SEC (2013)
17 career sacks; 182 career tackles.

12. Saints: Sheldon Rankins, Defensive Tackle, Louisville

Team Needs: DL, QB, CB, OG, & OL
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-7th, Pass-7th, Run-15th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-32nd, Pass-32nd, Run-27th

From February by Larry Holder-" Some NFL mock drafts from some of the media's more reputable pundits are slotting the New Orleans Saints to select Louisville defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins at No. 12 overall in the NFL draft. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. is one of them"

Saints need help on the defensive line. Their defense was dead last in the league

According to NFL.com:
NFL COMPARISON: Grady Jarrett
Combine Grade: 6.18

Awards/Highlights: N/A

13. Dolphins: Eli Apple, Cornerback, Ohio State

Team Needs: CB, OT, QB, OG, & DE
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-22nd, Pass-24th, Run-13th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-25th, Pass-29th, Run-20th

They need a corner they draft a corner.
March 31, 2016-http://www.sbnation.com/nfl-mock-draft/2016/3/31/11335802/2016-nfl-mock-draft-miami-dolphins-eli-apple-ohio-state

According to NFL.com:
NFL COMPARISON: Trumaine Johnson
Combine Grade: 5.68

Award/Highlights:
Defensive MVP of 2016 Fiesta Bowl
CFP National Champion (2015)
Sugar Bowl Champion (2015)
Big Ten Champion (2014)

14. Raiders: William Jackson III, Cornerback, Houston

Team Needs: CB, OT, ILB, S, & C
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-17th, Pass-11th, Run-24th
2015 Defense 5 Rankings: Total-15th, Pass-16th, Run-15th

One of the fastest corners of this year's draft. The Raiders could use a corner at this pick (Alexander or Jackson III) I think the Raiders will go Jackson for the speed. They don't need a great cover corner with Mack rushing the pasher but they do need a play making corner and Jackson is that playmaker. He has a lot of confidence right now which is huge for a cornerback making the transition. Peach Bowl MVP to a great combine.

According to NFL.com:
NFL COMPARISON: Phillip Gaines
Combine Grade: 5.93

Awards/Highlights:
2015 Peach Bowl Defensive MVP
Second-team All-AAC (2014, 2015)
8 career interceptions; 40 career passes deflected

15. Titans: Myles Jack, Outside Linebacker, UCLA

Team Needs: OT, CB, S, WR, & DE.
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-32nd, Pass-29th, Run-29th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-23rd, Pass-24th, Run-24th

Titans need offensive line help to protect Mariota but they will pick best available is Jack is still on the board. NFL Network's Mike Mayock thinks Jack will fall to the Raiders. I think the Raiders will go DB with their pick.

According to NFL.com
NFL COMPARISON: NaVorro Bowman
Combine Grade: 7.5

Awards/Highlights:
2× Second-team All-Pac-12 (2013, 2014)
Sporting News Freshman All-American (2013)
Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year (2013)
Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year (2013)

16. Lions: Reggie Ragland, Inside Linebacker, Alabama

Team Needs: OT, CB, ILB, & DL
2015 Offense Rankings: Total-13th, Pass-15th, Run-27th
2015 Defense Rankings: Total-16th, Pass-20th, Run-14th

Ragland is a dominating MLB and a player that can contribute immediately to the Lions defense. They focused on the offensive side of the ball during free agency so defense is 1st priority. Ragland is by far the best ML in the draft. He is expecting to be a better version of previous Alabama linebackers.

According to NFL.com:
NFL COMPARISON E.J. Henderson
Combine Grade: 6.51

Awards/Highlights:
CFP National Champion (2016)
BCS National Champion (2013)
SEC Champion (2012, 2014, 2015)
SEC Defensive Player of the Year (2015)
