2022 College Recruiting - 9 Commits

Last Player Grade Published on Aug. 12, 2021
Mississippi State logo CB DeCarlos Nicholson (Petal, MS) commits to Mississsippi State  View Class

Nicholson (6-3, 200) is one of the top junior college prospects in the 2022 class and is rated as the top cornerback. He played quarterback in his freshman year at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College before switching to defense. Nicholson chose Mississippi State over Kentucky, Florida State and Baylor.

DeCarlos Nicholson's Player Grade: B
Mississippi State logo OL Lucas Taylor (Mobile, AL) commits to Mississippi State  View Class

Taylor (6-5, 310) is originally from Mississippi and committed to LSU in August. He made the decision to flip to Mississippi State after an unofficial visit to Starkville over the past week. He plays tackle in high school, but he's likely going to move inside to guard at the next level. Taylor is a mauler, and he plays mean with a clear nasty streak. Although the testing numbers aren't impressive, Taylor moves better than you think, and he can pull from one side of the field to the other. He is strong at the point of contact and does not back down from a challenge. Taylor will need to improve his footwork a little, especially blocking in the Air Raid offense.

Lucas Taylor's Player Grade: C+
Mississippi State logo LB/DE Donterry Russell (Jackson, MS) commits to Mississippi State  View Class

Russell (6-4, 200) has the classic look of an edge player with good long arm and a nice burst off the snap. His most recent game film is as a sophomore because his school didn't play football in 2020, but the quickness and ability to get in the backfield is evident right away. Russell is an active body who doesn't mess around coming off the outside. He can work in a stand-up role, which seems likely, or put his hand in the ground like a traditional defensive end. Either way, Russell showed great potential as a sophomore and will now take advantage of camp season to continue his development.

Donterry Russell's Player Grade: C+
Mississippi State logo ATH Trent Singleton (Raymond, MS) commits to Mississippi State  View Class

Singleton (6-0, 185) plays quarterback in high school, but he could end up as a running back, wide receiver or defensive back in college. He trained with the defensive backs at Mississippi State's first prospect camp of the year, and it's good for him to start getting reps and teaching at the position because there will be a learning curve once his gets on campus. Singleton is a good athlete who also runs track. He is going to need time to learn his position, but he is a natural leader with a great attitude. Singleton's one of those players who will find success at the next level through his work ethic.

Trent Singleton's Player Grade: B-
Mississippi State logo QB Braedyn Locke (Rockwall, TX) commits to Mississippi State  View Class

When you look at Locke (6-0, 181) from a production standpoint, his numbers are eye-popping. He threw for over 4,000 yards and 52 touchdowns as a junior and over 3,000 yards and 41 touchdowns in his sophomore season. Locke tossed just 15 interceptions over those two seasons, which is remarkable considering the high volume of passing Locke does. Locke is good with his ball placement. He has completed a little under 65 percent of his passes, but it feels like that number could get higher this year. Like most of Mike Leach's type of quarterbacks, Locke moves well within a contained space, but he's looking to get the ball out of his hands fast and on target. Locke is a good quarterback prospect and a great fit with Leach.

Braedyn Locke's Player Grade: B
Mississippi State logo WR Jarnorris Hopson (Horn Lake, MS) commits to Mississippi State  View Class

Hopson (5-10, 175) is a smooth, versatile athlete who can rack up yardage through a few different avenues. He plays some quarterback in high school, mostly operating as a wildcat or single-wing type of player. Hopson has also played on the outside or in the slot, and that's a big deal in Mike Leach's offense, as Leach likes to move wide receivers around depending on the formation.

Hopson is a natural playmaker who can do good things in space, and he has the agility to make tacklers look silly in the open field. Hopson can also return kicks. Even though he is on the smaller side, Hopson is tough and will battle for extra yardage. He'll have to put on more size in college to continue using that element of his game, but I think that will happen.

Jarnorris Hopson's Player Grade: B-
Mississippi State logo S Wesley Miller (Columbus, MS) commits to Mississippi State  View Class

Miller (5-10, 185) is an undersized, but very active, safety and a very good athlete who plays baseball and runs track. He isn't afraid to stick his nose into the pile on a tackle, and he's aggressive at making plays in a one-on-one situation. Miller doesn't get broken down easily. He could also work out as a boundary cornerback. He defends the ball well and is quick turning out of breaks. Miller will go against larger, taller receivers with some level of success. He can play either role as a safety.

Wesley Miller's Player Grade: C+
Mississippi State logo S Jourdan Thomas (Montgomery, AL) commits to Mississippi State  View Class

A day after landing a commitment from Wesley Miller, the Bulldogs come back with Thomas (6-1, 190), who is the bigger and more rangy safety of the two prospects. Thomas is going to provide more options in pass coverage. He transitions well in the backpedal and seems to do a good job of tracking the ball all the while. Thomas could fit very well playing in a deep safety role that allows him to monitor the field. He plays the run with integrity, but probably nothing more than an average tackler at this point.

Jourdan Thomas' Player Grade: C+
Mississippi State logo CB Tyler Woodard (Memphis, TN) commits to Mississippi State  View Class

Woodard (6-0, 177) is the third secondary prospect who has committed to Mississippi State in as many days. He did not play as a junior, but he played plenty as a sophomore and projects out as a big cornerback who could play on either side or at deep safety. Woodard has great athleticism. He's very twitchy and jumpy and just difficult for a wide receiver to figure out how to hand. Woodard likes to battle and complete, even as a sophomore he was taking on the top opposing wide receiver.

Tyler Woodard's Player Grade: B
