Why Undrafted?: Cody Hoffman

Why Undrafted?: Cody Hoffman, WR, BYU
By Charlie Campbell, @draftcampbell

Entering the 2013 season, many felt that Hoffman could be a second-day prospect in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was one of the most productive receivers in the nation in 2012, despite inconsistent quarterback play. The junior caught 100 passes for 1,248 yards with 11 touchdowns. The 6-foot-4, 223-pounder used his size and run-after-the-catch ability to produce lots of yards and points for the BYU offense. Many thought Hoffman would enter the 2013 NFL Draft, but he decided to return for his senior year. Hoffman is one of the rare examples of a player who made a mistake by going back to school.

A suspension and some injuries caused a dip in Hoffman’s production in 2013. The senior ended up recording 57 receptions for 894 yards and five touchdowns for the year, plus played well against good competition. After the season and the Senior Bowl, Hoffman was viewed as a fourth- or fifth round-pick.

The big concern about Hoffman was the speed to separate from NFL defensive backs. At the Combine, sources said that red flag was validated when Hoffman ran a slow 40 time of 4.65 seconds. Teams didn’t like some of his off-the-field issues either, but those were said to be secondary to views on if Hoffman’s game could translate to the NFL.

Hoffman will have to make the Washington Redskins’ roster based off of special teams. Washington is a good choice for a landing spot though. The coaching staff under Jay Gruden is very willing to take on undrafted players who earn a spot over veterans. The Redskins have a number of speed receivers, but Hoffman would bring some size to the receiving corps. Plus, Washington’s veteran receivers have had some injury issues in the past. Hoffman could work out well in Gruden’s West Coast offense as a Z (flanker) receiver who does the dirty work in the short to intermediate part of the field. Hoffman could be a nice scheme fit for Washington as a backup wide out, but he will need to stand out on special teams to get his foot in the door.
