Below, you can find various tidbits of NFL Draft rumors and information offered by Mike Mayock, Michael Lombardi and the rest of the Path to the Draft crew on the NFL Network. I posted these in my forum, but I thought it would be better to keep all the draft rumors together in this section. I'll be tweeting these during Path to the Draft at @walterfootball.
Michael Lombardi: I would not look past a quarterback with the Bengals.
Mike Mayock: I would rather draft Dontay Moch in the third round than Justin Houston or Akeem Ayers in the first round. Two years from now, Moch will be a better player.
Mike Mayock: I like Marcus Gilchrist. I'll take him in the third or fourth over than Rahim Moore in the first or second.
Mike Mayock: I would take Dan Watkins late one, early two over Gabe Carimi, Derek Sherrod or Nate Solder in the first.
Michael Lombardi: Dontay Moch is the type of player the Steelers draft.
Michael Lombardi: I think Carolina is looking for a can't-miss player. A.J. Green is can't-miss. The Panthers have no receivers.
Mike Mayock: I'm not buying into Marty Hurney definitely taking a quarterback with the first pick. I've got no problem with A.J. Green. I'd rather have Marcell Dareus. Patrick Peterson would make some sense too.
Darren Urban (AZCardinals.com Beat Writer): I'll be honest, I know a lot of people are talking about Blaine Gabbert for the Cardinals, but I think they're going to go defense and look at quarterback elsewhere like Marc Bulger.
Darren Urban: If Blaine Gabbert's there at No. 5, the Cardinals will take a pass. The Cardinals need play-makers on defense. Von Miller would be a great choice.
Darren Urban: Von Miller is a more coveted selection than Patrick Peterson. But Peterson is a possibility if Von Miller is gone.
Darren Urban: I don't think the Cardinals would give up the No. 5 pick for Kevin Kolb, but they might be willing to give up a 2012 first-round pick.
Mike Mayock: Franchise quarterback trumps everything, but if Blaine Gabbert is available at No. 5, I believe Arizona has to sprint to the podium and hand in their card.
Mike Mayock: Aldon Smith could be a 280-pound dominating right defensive end. He's one of the quickest get-off guys. The 3-4 teams like him at 265, but he's best suited to play in the 4-3.
Mike Mayock: I like Ryan Kerrigan as a 4-3 defensive end. He looks a lot like Ray Edwards to me. The 3-4 teams might see some Mike Vrabel.
Mike Mayock: Robert Quinn is the ideal 4-3 defensive end. He didn't look good in the pass drop drills as a linebacker, but how often do the Cowboys drop DeMarcus Ware into coverage? He has elite ability to get to the quarterback. It wouldn't surprise me to see the 3-4 teams in the top 10 - like San Francisco - consider him as a rush linebacker.
Mike Mayock: Da'Quan Bowers didn't have a good workout. I'm not a big believer in him as a top 10 pick.
Mike Mayock: Brooks Reed has a great motor. The 3-4 teams like him an awful lot.
Mike Mayock: Allen Bailey seems to get stuck on blocks. He doesn't have great instincts. He could slide to the second or third round.
Mike Mayock: I still think Adrian Clayborn is going in the first round. If you liked him before knowing about the Erb's Palsy, why wouldn't like him now?
Michael Lombardi: I think Robert Quinn is much more suited for the 4-3. You want to bring him forward and bring his ability to rush the passer at full force.
Michael Lombardi: If you're a 3-4, you have to go a different direction other than Robert Quinn.
Michael Lombardi: I worry about Da'Quan Bowers in terms of his work ethic, his knee and the lackluster workout.
Mike Mayock: Like Malcolm Jenkins, I think Aaron Williams' best position could be free safety.
Michael Lombardi: Everyone keeps talking about Tyron Smith going to the Cowboys. Aldon Smith is a guy I'm hearing about for Dallas.
Jason La Canfora: I continue hear to continue buzz about Jake Locker being the third quarterback off the board in the middle of the first round. Maybe Minnesota. Maybe Miami.
Jason La Canfora: I hear that Jay Gruden likes Andy Dalton. Jon Gruden likes him too - he worked him out.
@Black&Gold Problem is that you see Eli and Cobi as solid backups. Truth is that Eli is number 2 and Cobi is our number 3. They aren't backups, but starters. So what you're saying is that we have no true number 2, but see no need in drafting a receiver? What D line depth are you thinking? DE or NT? Have you seen what LT Walton has done? Remember he's only in his second year.
@Steelr Fan 3:16 Coates was supposed to be plan B at number 2 with the uncertainty of Bryant. You make the case that he's a one trick pony and not a 50 catch per season wide-out, so does that scream out as a option for number 2? What gives you hope about Green? I hope he does end up staying on the field, but so far in his career he hasn't be able to do that. I like James, but if he goes down you trust Grimble? He can't block, and hasn't been reliable in the pass game. He did mess his ribs up with a nice touchdown reception a few weeks ago. That still doesn't mean he can pick up and be an impact if James would not be able to go. We have 7 picks in this draft. The first I hope goes OLB. We are good at CB with Burnes and @[email protected] will be challenged hopefully by Golson. Loser of the battle would be a good slot corner. Golson lacks length so they may throw him in the slot role anyways. LT Walton has been more than solid at DE. If Heyward or Tuitt can't go a few weeks during the season then I have faith in LT to get the job done. I like Chickillo and Moates at OLB. They have started and played solid. Williams and Dirty Red at backup ILB is good depth that any team would love. Safety we have Golden and Dangerfield. Both have started any didn't miss a beat. Offensive line? Yeah, we're good there. You say we're good at tight end and WR, so with or final 6 picks we're going what exactly? A RB would be nice with Williams age. A backup that won't see the field unless God forbid Bell gets hurt is a wasted pick anywhere in the top 4 rounds. Maybe 5th would be suffice. That's 2 picks gone and 5 to go. A backup QB of the future would be nice. Four to go. A special teamed lol? Warren, Boswell, and Berry are really good.
