NFL Draft Rumors and Buzz: April 9, 2011
Below are some comments Adam Schefter made in his NFL Draft Mailbag found on ESPN's Insider. If you don't have Insider, here are some of the key points. Follow me @walterfootball for more.
If you watch the tape, take a look at how many tackles Jonathan Baldwin breaks ... not many. He also has some character questions. He was arrested in May 2009 and charged with misdemeanor indecent assault, summary harassment and disorderly conduct.
As for Leonard Hankerson, some teams wonder about his ability to be a deep-play threat. He also has had some drops and like Baldwin, he is not a great runner after the catch.
Jonathan Baldwin and Leonard Hankerson will be second-round picks.
I had one person tell me Jimmy Smith the third-best cornerback in the draft and another tell me he's not worthy of a first-round pick.
Some teams are worried about Jimmy Smith's character and his sense of worth.
If Baltimore wanted Jimmy Smith at No. 26, my sense is it would be able to get him there.
This year, as much as the Colts still need a defensive tackle, they have to go offensive tackle somewhere high. They have to protect Peyton Manning, that's more important than anything they can do right now.
It's hard for me to imagine Mark Ingram falling to No. 32.
I know some people think that Mark Ingram's value is dropping some -- not because of him, but because of the value of running backs -- but I'm not buying it.
The Panthers simply have to take the player they want -- which I believe will come down to Blaine Gabbert, Cam Newton, Patrick Peterson or A.J. Green.
*** Unrelated to Adam Schefter ***
Jon Gruden: I think Cam Newton's the best player in the country. I agree with the Heisman Trophy people that gave him the award. He's got everything I'm looking for.

Is Mallet the "most ready to play" QB or is he going to "slide to the 2nd Round"? MAKE UP YOUR MIND, MAYOCK!!!

The Broncos should have Miller in the conversation for 2nd overall? What?!
Kyle, or should I say Chad, is going to be replaced by Bulaga at Left Tackle. The Bears should trade down for Titus Young, a deep threat like most of their current receivers? Not a guy with great hands that could develop into a legit number 1 for Cutler (like Greg Little)? Not an offensive lineman or 2? Titus Freakin' Young? Millen is still the worst GM of all time, but Casserly's utterly stupid comments make me think he could've narrowed the gap if Houston had given him more time.

I love the Casserly quote where his favorite tight end is described, but not named.

@Matt
Ryan Mallett has a superior arm. Everyone says Mallett is just a chucker... no way... he's got the most accurate arm in the draft between 15-50 yards. Scary potential with Brandon Marshall.

Also, why don't the Panthers consider letting time run out on them? Jerry Richardson is a cheap SOB. I'm sure he wouldn't mind dropping to #3 or #4 and grabbing whoever is left between Green, Newton, Gabbert, or Peterson.

How is Mallet any different than Henne? They are both big, strong-armed, slow pocket passers. I don't see how Miami improves their team by replacing one with the other.

Jason La Canfora has to be stupid. If the Bengals wanted to wait till the 9th pick they simply could have offered a steal of a deal to Dallas like say Give us John Kitna and a 4th round pick for a swap in the 1st round. Dallas would jump on that in a heartbeat and draft Patrick Peterson and Cincy would have their insurance in case Carson Palmer retires on them and a 4th round pick. Sure it's not an even trade but they'd be getting alot more that way then by not drafting and waiting for the 9th pick. Of course you need a CBA before that trade can go down but you get what I'm saying.

I rarely agree with Casserly but he's right here. You can't give Bowers a fat paycheck with a banged up knee. I disagree with taking him until the early second round. Plenty of solid DL prospects in round 1.

Charlie Casserly thinks DaQuan Bowers falls falls out of the first round? That probably means he's back in the conversation for 1st overall!

Wait, Mike Mayock gave Julio Jones a Hines Ward comparison? When on God's green earth did Hines Ward ever run a 4.3? Plus, Hines Ward is a possession receiver while Julio Jones is probably more along the lines of a speedster. I like the comparison to T.O. more, even though that is very far fetched as well. If he was as good as T.O., i'm pretty sure Carolina would no doubt take him.

@Walt
Do you think the day is coming when the NFL trys to make more money off the draft, like say people being able to pay to watch a teams war room live? I doubt teams would ever agree to that but I think that would be exciting. |
