2014 NBA Draft Scouting Report: James Michael McAdoo

Position: Power Forward

Size: 6-9, 230

School: North Carolina, Junior

Strengths:
  • Athleticism
  • Explosive at the rim
  • Leaping ability
  • Quick first step off the bounce as a straight-line driver
  • Solid rebounder
  • Active around the glass on both ends
  • Decent mid-range game
  • Turnaround jump shot when posting up
  • Runs the floor well
  • Should be able to guard either forward position in the NBA
  • Active in the passing lanes
  • Doesn’t force much; takes what is given to him

  • Weaknesses:
  • Is he a power forward or small forward at the next level?
  • Physicality
  • Outside shooting
  • Free throw shooting
  • Ball handling
  • Creating his own shot

  • Summary: McAdoo hasn’t lived up to the hype at North Carolina, and as a result, his draft stock has taken a hit. He hasn’t fully developed his all-around game, and my biggest issue with McAdoo is that he is a hybrid forward without a true position at the NBA level. McAdoo relies on his athleticism more than his skill level and still needs to develop his face-up game. Once considered a lottery pick, McAdoo is now a borderline first-round pick.

Player Comparison: Tyrus Thomas. Thomas was praised for his athleticism coming out of LSU, and that is McAdoo’s strength as well. Both guys are explosive at the rim and are solid rebounders, but lack the physicality and perimeter game to be a threat from the perimeter. Thomas struggled to find his niche in the league, and McAdoo will likely face a similar challenge.
