Carlos Boozer Signs with Bulls

It would seem as though the Chicago Bulls have landed their first big free agent prize. It just wasn't who the Bulls thought it would be.

After the commitment of Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to the Miami Heat, and with fading optimism that they were ever really a front runner to land LeBron James to begin with, the Bulls shifted their focus to Carlos Boozer and have reportedly agreed to a 5-year, 80 million dollar deal that escalates in future seasons.

Quite simply, and this is the important part, this allows the Bulls to retain enough cap space to allow LeBron to come to Chicago should he decide to pick the Bulls.

On one hand, it would appear that the Bulls' courting of one of, if not the, biggest free agent classes in the NBA's history was a complete failure. Bosh and Wade are heading to Miami to apparently play 46 minutes a game and pay no state income tax, and it would appear LeBron is ready to ruin his career by heading to the Knicks, though there is no confirmation on that.

Certainly, it wasn't the best period for the men in red from the west side of Chicago. Looking closer, however, Boozer does bring a degree of selflessness to the court, and would willing to be a second banana to a great young point guard - something he did often and well in Utah with Deron Williams.

He is one of the best post-men in the NBA at executing the pick-and-roll, and could have a field day with Rose in this respect.

He's also very willing to do the dirty work in the post, even if he's a little undersized (size on the front line with Noah and Boozer DOES become something of a concern). In all, it's a solid signing by the Bulls even if it isn't a flashy one.

What's more, it DOES have to give LeBron something to think about, because he would still be able to come into a GREAT nucleus in Chicago and lead his team to the NBA title. Unfortunately it would seem he is destined to head elsewhere, leaving the Bulls a lot of room to overpay some mediocre players with mid-level contracts.

Time will tell where the Bulls end up, but to say that today is one of the most important days for this once-proud franchise in the last 12 years is an understatement.
