2017 NFL Mock Draft by kkunert327 - Way Too Early 2018 Mock
Published at 5/5/2017 5:08:51 PM

Life in the NFL is always moving towards what's next. So, without even a week between drafts I am sure scouts and teams are already looking into their draft boards for next year. I will go by strength of schedules and try to determine records and orders. If you take offense to any of it please realize it's only April and you still need to account for injuries before the season even starts so who knows how it all shakes out.

Round 1

1. 49ers: Sam Darnold, Quarterback, USC

Here is the quarterback that John Lynch and company will be tanking for next year. Now do not get me wrong they can win a few games with Hoyer/Barkley, but definitely not more than a handful. Especially, in their conference with Seattle and their overall difficult schedule. Darnold if he does come out and continues to play well while under the microscope this season will be the number one pick. However, he will only be 20 if he comes out next year and a red shirt sophomore so I am not totally sold that he will come out. Like Andrew Luck, who stayed an extra year for seasoning I think Darnold will, as well. Especially, if the first pick goes to a disfunctional team like the Jets, Browns, or Bills.

2017 First Round Selection: Solomon Thomas DE Standford & Reuben Foster LB Alabama
2018 Record Prediction: 1-15

2. Jets: Josh Allen, Quarterback, Wyoming

Unless, Christian Hackenberg shocks the world the Jets will most likely be selecting high next year. Hell, it might not even be his fault with how poor the offensive talent is around him and how leaky their defense was last year. I think Allen reminds me a lot of like Carson Wentz with a ton of size and arm strength. Plus, a real workman like mentality coming out of Wyoming and a good understanding of a pro style system. If I were the Jets I would however, avoid Josh Rosen who has a bit of a diva like attitude and might not work out in New York.

2017 First Round Selection: Jamal Adams S LSU
2018 Record Prediction: 2-14

3. Browns: Saquon Barkley, Running Back, Penn State

Everyone has quarterbacks mocked with the top 3 picks with the Jets, 49ers, and Browns in any order, but I highly doubt that happens. Especially, since it's only happened twice in the modern NFL era. So, most likely someone is going to slide out of the three. I am banking on the Browns sticking with Kizer for a year or two since he will probably see some playing time next year with how brittle Kessler is. In any matter, surrounding whoever the quarterback is with weapons can help a lot. Barkley is an impressive runner and teams are starting to come around on selecting running backs high in the draft.

2017 First Round Selections: Myles Garrett OLB Texas A&M, Jabrill Peppers LB/S, & David Njoku TE Miami
2018 Record Prediction: 2-14

4. Bears: Mike McGlinchey, Offensive Tackle, Notre Dame

In a perfect world in my opinion the Bears should bomb this year land the number one pick to get a haul of picks like the Titans did a few years ago and all the while stick with the plan of leaving Trubisky on the bench to prepare for next year. Though, I feel like Glennon will play with a huge chip on his shoulder as a big screw you to Pace and play well enough to prevent that scenario of the number one pick. Either way upgrading left tackle if Charles Leno keeps playing like a low end blocker is a good idea for Trubisky's future success.

2017 First Round Selection: Mitchell Trubisky QB UNC
2018 Record Prediction: 4-12

5. Browns: Calvin Ridley, Wide Receiver, Alabama

This is the selection from the Texans who I believe will lose a lot more games than expected due to the Titans and Colts getting better and having better quarterbacks. In that case, all the better for the Browns who trade extremely smart, but pick players like they are picking names out of a hat or who could sell more jerseys i.e. Peppers. They should continue to upgrade the offense around whoever the quarterback is and having Ridley to pair with Corey Coleman, David Njoku, and in this scenario Saquon Barkley actually makes a menacing offense.

Texan's 2017 First Round Selection: DeShaun Watson QB Clemson
Texan's 2018 Record Prediction: 6-10

6. Rams: Tarvarus McFadden, Cornerback, Florida State

Trumain Johnson remains on the Rams roster, but after signing his second franchise tag two years in a row I doubt they do it again. If he fails to stay healthy again I bet they move off from him. I know building around Goff needs to be the number one priority of the Rams, but they did a decent jobs getting him weapons in this years draft. Now the defense needs some assistance. McFadden is an elite cover prospect with a ton of size, ball skills, and upside. I do not know how well Wade Phillips will mesh with the young Sean McVay, but if he stays he has been known to groom defensive backs very well.

2017 First Round Selection: None
2018 Record Prediction: 6-10

7. Saints: Josh Rosen, Quarterback, UCLA

I can see a slide for Rosen out of the other top 3 quarterbacks since he did not play that great last season before getting shut down and his size could worry some teams. Also, he has some off field diva-like issues which may be a cause for concern on how serious he cares about being a great quarterback. The Saints could be in the market for a successor to Drew Brees and Rosen could learn a lot from the veteran if Brees stays for one more season.

2017 First Round Selection: Marshon Lattimore CB Ohio St
2018 Record Prediction: 6-10

8. Ravens: Christian Kirk, Wide Receiver, Texas A&M

I think the Ravens will have an up and down season due to their tough schedule and their very pedestrian offense. I understand Ozzie Newsome drafts best player available more often than not, but to completely ignore the offense's skill positions is a big oversight if you ask me. Right now the unknown Chris Moore occupies a starting spot as the third stringer to go along with first round disappointment Breshad Perriman. Kirk is only 5-11, but the Ravens thrived with another undersized receiver in Steve Smith. The Aggie has a ton of explosive play making ability in him similar to Odell Beckham with his ability to make plays on every level of the field.

2017 First Round Selection: Marlon Humphrey CB Alabama
2018 Record Prediction: 7-9

9. Vikings: Luke Falk, Quarterback, Washington State

Sam Bradford is a free agent after this season and if I were the Vikings I would be hesitant to give him a big contract with how fragile and ineffective he is as a quarterback. Do not get me wrong he can move an offense and limits mistakes, but like Alex Smith with the Chiefs you can always do better. Depending on if Teddy Bridgewater comes back I think the Vikings should look into this quarterback class for an upgrade. Falk could have snuck into the first round this year if he came out, but come next year I think he will be a better known commodity. He has good size, a strong arm, and a good feel for the pocket. The only thing holding him back is him coming out of an Air Raid offense and it may take him a bit to develop.

2017 First Round Selection: None
2018 Record Prediction: 7-9

10. Bills: Arden Key, Defensive End, LSU

In this scenario, I think the Bills attempt to trade up to land a quarterback since they very clearly do not love Tyrod Taylor even though he will win them too many games to get his replacement easily. In any case, if they stay here finding a young pass rusher to come in and be a real threat against Tom Brady is a good idea to finally maybe win a game against them. Like you saw in this years draft pass rushers slid out of the top 10 in favor of offensive skill position players and I can see the same happening again with teams emphasizing scoring now in the offensive heavy NFL. Key is a talented and electrifying pass rusher who has versatility to boot. He would fit perfectly in Sean McDermott's defensive front.

2017 First Round Selection: Tre'Davious White CB LSU
2018 Record Prediction: 7-9

11. Cardinals: Adonis Alexander, Cornerback, Virginia Tech

The Cardinals were praised for drafting Budda Baker, but I think it was odd since they really needed help at corner over the safety spot. I also do not think he will be effective at corner like many think he will be. In any case, they still need a corner who can handle the heat across from Patrick Peterson while he is still playing at a high level. Alexander should be a nice safe pick coming from Virginia Tech who has made a few stable and strong corners over the years. His length should be a nice compliment to the speedier Peterson.

2017 First Selection: Haason Reddick LB Temple
2018 Record Prediction: 7-9

12. Dolphins: Martinas Rankin, Offensive Tackle, Mississippi State

I would like to think the Dolphins have realized drafting Ju'wan James in the first round a few years ago was one of the worst picks in awhile. They should look to upgrade him on the right side and find a blocker to create a great tandem with Laremy Tunsil on the left side. Rankin would have been a nice second round pick, but with another year of seasoning and improvement on his strength he should be a strong first round candidate.

2017 First Round Selection: Charles Harris DE Missouri
2018 Record Prediction: 7-9

13. Jaguars: Quenton Nelson, Offensive Guard, Notre Dame

This is the year the Jags could finally move out of the top 5 picks with a relatively easy schedule and a new regime led by Tom Coughlin. I think they are trying to recreate a power offense and with the addition of Leonard Fournette they should really invest into that movement. Nelson will be an immediate guard upgrade to pair with this years selection of Cam Robinson giving them a strong interior. The Notre Dame product would have most likely been a first rounder along with his teammate McGlinchey.

2017 First Round Selection: Leonard Fournette RB LSU
2018 Record Prediction: 7-9

14. Redskins: Courtland Sutton, Wide Receiver, SMU

This is an odd up coming draft for the Redskins since they may be without Kirk Cousins by this time next year if they continue to dis him. I think they should just pay him since finding someone better will cost a lot for them to trade up for. A receiver could be needed if Pryor bolts after his one year deal and Josh Doctson continues to fail to impress. Sutton is a big bodied receiver who can run all the routes and was actually my favorite heading into the 2017 draft. He has a lot of Brandon Marshall to his game with his ability to block out receivers with very good strength for the position.

2017 First Round Selection: Jonathan Allen DT Alabama
2018 Record Prediction: 7-9

15. Chargers: Mitch Hyatt, Offensive Tackle, Clemson

The Chargers did an amazing job upgrading the interior of their line in the 2017 draft, but relying on Russell Okung on the left side might turn out to be their undoing with how injury prone he can be. Hyatt is a talented blocker who can come in and play the right side if Okung remains there next year. If not I think his experience being a great blindside blocker for DeShaun Watson is a very good sign for future success.

2017 First Round Selection: Mike Williams WR Clemson
2018 Record Prediction: 8-8

16. Eagles: Derrius Guice, Running Back, LSU

I am kind of shocked the Eagles failed to address the running back position and please do not tell me the undersized Donnel Pumphrey is a quality possible gem. Much like Sproles and Smallwood he is another rotational pass catching back. I may be biased, but I love Guice and when I watched him he looked better than Fournette to me with his better speed and shiftiness in the open field. In the end, I think he will turn into the better pro with his more versatile skill set and has a less stressful running style than the power back Fournette is which can cause him to get hurt often.

2017 First Round Selection: Derek Barnett DE Tennessee
2018 Record Prediction: 8-8
