NHL Hockey Picks - December 2007

Note: Picks to be posted daily prior to 5:45 p.m. My NHL picking records are at the bottom of this page.

Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 (0-1, -$240)

San Jose Sharks (21-17) at Minnesota Wild (22-16)
Line: Sharks +100; Wild -120.

I hate betting favorites in hockey because you can go broke easily if you get a series of picks wrong. But I am taking the Wild tonight; despite tons of action on the Sharks, the line has risen from -110 to -120 in Pinnacle.

Prediction: Wild 3, Sharks 1
Wild -120 (2 Units) -- Incorrect; -$240

Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007 (1-0, +$300)

New Jersey Devils (21-16) at New York Islanders (18-18)
Line: Devils -120; Islanders +100.

The Islanders look like a great play here; they're not as good as the Devils, yet this line is low. It actually opened up -120 in Pinnacle and dropped to -109 despite tons of action on the visitor.

Prediction: Islanders 2, Devils 1
Islanders +100 (3 Units) -- Correct; +$300

Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007 (1-0, +$330)

Florida Panthers (17-19) at Atlanta Thrashers (18-19)
Line: Panthers +110; Thrashers -130.

Ugh, the losing streak continues. Let's stop the bleeding by fading a team getting 90 percent of the money and see the line moving the opposite way.

Prediction: Panthers 3, Thrashers 2
Panthers +110 (3 Units) -- Correct; +$330

Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 (0-1, -$300)

Nashville Predators (16-18) at Chicago Blackhawks (18-17)
Line: Predators +125; Blackhawks -145.

Ouch - after a hot start in hockey, I went 1-5 last week. Let's rebound - or lose even more cash! I like Nashville tonight. Tons of action on the Blackhawks, yet the line dropped in Pinnacle from -145 to -124.

Prediction: Predators 3, Blackhawks 1
Predators +125 (3 Units) -- Incorrect; -$300

Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007 (0-1, -$330)

Ottawa Senators (22-12) at New York Rangers (17-18)
Line: Senators -110; Rangers -110.

I can't believe I'm taking the Rangers over the Senators. Someone please shoot me. But that's what the line movement is telling me to do. With 75-percent action on the visitor, the line has dropped in Pinnacle from -116 to -105. Let's hope I turn around this sudden cold streak.

Prediction: Rangers 2, Senators 1
Rangers -110 (3 Units) -- Incorrect; -$330

Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007 (0-1, -$300)

Vancouver Canucks (19-16) at Phoenix Coyotes (17-16)
Line: Canucks -120; Coyotes +100.

I find it odd that despite so much action on Vancouver, the line dropped in Pinnacle from -121 to -112. It's cheaper there than everywhere else. Perhaps they've been paying attention to Phoenix's four-game winning streak.

Prediction: Coyotes 3, Canucks 2
Coyotes +100 (3 Units) -- Incorrect; -$300

Friday, Dec. 21, 2007 (0-1, -$200)

Los Angeles Kings (12-23) at Columbus Jackets (14-19)
Line: Kings +140; Jackets -160.

I find it odd that with equal action on both sides, the line dropped in Pinnacle from -167 to -154. It's also cheaper at Pinnacle than anywhere else, meaning the sharpest book on the net wants you to take the host. I don't mind fading a team that has lost four of five.

Prediction: Kings 2, Jackets 1
Kings +140 (2 Units) -- Incorrect; -$200

Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007 (1-0, +$240)

Detroit Redwings (25-9) at St. Louis Blues (16-14)
Line: Red Wings -140; Blues +120.

Let's snap this ugly two-game losing streak by fading the best team in the NHL! Sounds awesome! The Blues have lost like a million games in a row, but they've actually won three of the last four meetings against Detroit, so maybe they have their number or something. Despite 90 percent of the money on the Red Wings, the line has dropped in Pinnacle, -150 to -135.

Prediction: Blues 3, Red Wings 2
Blues +120 (2 Units) -- Correct; +$240

Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007 (0-1, -$100)

Colorado Avalanche (19-14) at Anaheim Ducks (16-20)
Line: Avalanche +115; Ducks -135.

No weird line movement tonight in the NHL, though there is tons of action on the Avalanche, and the line is moving their way. It opened up in Pinnacle at -135 and dropped to -125.

Prediction: Avalanche 3, Ducks 1
Avalanche +115 (1 Unit) -- Incorrect; -$100

Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007 (0-1, -$240)

Calgary Flames (16-18) at Columbus Jackets (14-18)
Line: Flames +100; Jackets -120.

I've been using the Flames as a play for what seems like a week now. People have taken notice of their five-game winning streak and have decided to bet them tonight. About 70 percent of the public money is on Calgary. Yet, despite that, the line has actually risen from -110 to -122 in Pinnacle in the Jackets' favor. Let's hit the host tonight.

Prediction: Jackets 2, Flames 1
Jackets -120 (2 Units) -- Incorrect; -$240

Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007 (1-0, +$220)

Calgary Flames (15-18) at St. Louis Blues (16-13)
Line: Flames +110; Blues -130.

I'm not sure why the public is all over St. Louis. Nearly 70 percent of the action is on the Blues. Yet, the line has dropped in Pinnacle, from -125 to -117. The red-hot Flames have won four in a row.

Prediction: Flames 4, Blues 2
Flames +110 (2 Units) -- Correct; +$220

Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007 (1-0, +$140)

Washington Capitals (12-20) at Tampa Bay Lightning (14-18)
Line: Capitals +140; Lightning -160.

These teams both stink, so I don't know who Tampa is to be favored by -160. I guess more than 70 percent of the action is on the Lightning because they've dominated Washington at home the past few years. That's fine, let the public take them. I'll side with the hotter Capitals, who have won three of four. The line has dropped in Pinnacle, by the way, from -160 to -154 despite the money on the host.

Prediction: Capitals 5, Lightning 3
Capitals +140 (1 Unit) -- Correct; +$140

Friday, Dec. 14, 2007 (1-0, +$270)

Minnesota Wild (16-14) at Anaheim Ducks (15-18)
Line: Wild +135; Ducks -155.

About three-quarters of the public is on Anaheim, which is understandable, given how it has dominated Minnesota over the years (6-2 since 2005, 13-5 since 1996). However, the line has dropped in Pinnacle from -161 to -152. Looks like the smart money is on the Wild.

Prediction: Wild 2, Ducks 0
Wild +135 (2 Units) -- Correct; +$270

Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007 (1-0, +$220)

Calgary Flames (13-18) at Tampa Bay Lightning (14-17)
Line: Flames +110; Lightning -130.

Shady line movement: With 70 percent of the money on Tampa Bay, the line has been dropping steadily from Pinnacle (-126 to -117).

Prediction: Flames 2, Lightning 1
Flames +110 (2 Units) -- Correct; +$220

Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007 (0-1, -$220)

Ottawa Senators (18-10) at Carolina Hurricanes (16-15)
Line: Senators -110; Hurricanes -110.

Ottawa is a public team in the NHL, which would explain by about 85 percent of the action is on them tonight. Yet, look at the line movement. The line in Pinnacle has dropped from -125 to -105.

Prediction: Hurricanes 2, Senators 1
Hurricanes -110 (2 Units) -- Incorrect; -$220

Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007 (1-0, +$105)

Calgary Flames (12-18) at Florida Panthers (13-16)
Line: Flames +105; Panthers -125.

No abnormal line movement today, but I'll take the Flames for a small play. With nearly 80 percent of the public taking them tonight, the line has matched the money, as the spread in Pinnacle dropped from -132 to -111.

Prediction: Flames 3, Panthers 2
Flames +105 (1 Unit) -- Correct; +$105

Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 (1-0, +$250)

Vancouver Canucks (16-13) at Los Angeles Kings (11-18)
Line: Canucks -145; Kings +125.

This line seems a bit short, considering the Canucks have won five of seven, while the Kings are 3-10 in their last 13. With 77 percent of the public on Vancouver, the line has dropped in Pinnacle from -147 to -140.

Prediction: Kings 3, Canucks 2
Kings +125 (2 Units) -- Correct; +$250

Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007 (0-1, -$200)

Anaheim Ducks (14-16) at Nashville Predators (13-13)
Line: Ducks +135; Predators -155.

The smart money looks to be on Anaheim, as the line has moved fom -150 to -148 in Pinnacle despite there being 70 percent on the host.

Prediction: Ducks 5, Predators 3
Ducks +135 (2 Units) -- Incorrect; -$200

Friday, Dec. 7, 2007 (1-0, +$200)

New York Rangers (15-13) at Atlanta Thrashers (13-14)
Line: Rangers -115; Thrashers -105.

Nearly 70 percent of the public is on the overrated Rangers, yet the line in Pinnacle dropped from -109 to -101.

Prediction: Thrashers 3, Rangers 2
Thrashers -105 (2 Units) -- Correct; +$200

Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007 (1-0, +$135)

Toronto Maple Leafs (11-17) at New York Rangers (15-12)
Line: Maple Leafs +135; Rangers -150.

The Rangers are overrated, so the smart money seems to be on the Maple Leafs tonight. With more than 70 percent of the cash on Toronto, the line has dropped in Pinnacle from -158 to -149.

Prediction: Maple Leafs 3, Rangers 1
Maple Leafs +135 (1 Unit) -- Correct; +$135

Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007 (0-1, -$100)

Ottawa Senators (16-10) at Florida Panthers (12-15)
Line: Senators -145; Panthers +125.

It seems like everyone expects the Senators to snap their seven-game losing streak. That could explain why 90 percent of the money is on Ottawa tonight. With that in mind, I find it odd that Pinnacle's line has decreased from -138 to -134. Shouldn't it go up?

Prediction: Panthers 4, Senators 3
Panthers +125 (1 Unit) -- Incorrect; -$100

Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007 (0-1, -$100)

Detroit Red Wings (18-8) at Montreal Canadiens (13-13)
Line: Red Wings -135; Canadiens +115.

The Red Wings have won three in a row, while Montreal has dropped four of five. So, why is Detroit only -135? And with 90 percent of the action on Detroit, why has the line dropped in Pinnacle from -135 to -133?

Prediction: Canadiens 3, Red Wings 2
Canadiens +115 (1 Unit) -- Incorrect; -$100

Monday, Dec. 3, 2007 (1-0, +$130)

Carolina Hurricanes (14-13) at New York Rangers (15-11)
Line: Hurricanes +130; Rangers -150.

People are loving the Rangers tonight; close to 65 percent of the action is on them. Yet, the line in Pinnacle has dropped from -160 to -143.

Prediction: Hurricanes 3, Rangers 1
Hurricanes +130 (1 Unit) -- Correct; +$130

Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007 (0-1, -$200)

Vancouver Canucks (14-11) at Minnesota Wild (14-11)
Line: Canucks +115; Wild -135.

Not too many games to choose from tonight, but I like the Canucks. Despite there being 80-percent action on the Wild, the line has dropped in Pinnacle from -155 to -135.

Prediction: Canucks 2, Wild 1
Canucks +115 (2 Units) -- Incorrect; -$200

Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007 (1-0, +$200)

Pittsburgh Penguins (11-13) at Toronto Maple Leafs (9-17)
Line: Penguins +115; Maple Leafs -135.

Pittsburgh is on fire, having won three in a row. Toronto, meanwhile, is as cold as the ice they play on, losing seven of nine. So, it's no surprise that the Penguins are a publicly backed underdog, getting about 80 percent of the cash tonight. Yet, the line in Pinnacle has risen from -115 to -132, indicating some sort of larcenous activity. I'll take my chances with the host.

Prediction: Maple Leafs 5, Penguins 3
Maple Leafs -135 (2 Units) -- Correct; +$200
