2013 NFL Free Agency: Star rating is out of five. Age listing as of Sept. 1, 2013.
Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

  1. Elvis Dumervil, DE, Broncos. Age: 29.
    Signed with Ravens

Elvis Dumervil has 63.5 sacks in six NFL seasons (he missed all of 2010 with an injury). This includes 11 sacks in 2012. He can be a liability in run support, but his tremendous ability to get to the quarterback makes up for that.

  2. Anthony Spencer, DE/OLB, Cowboys. Age: 29.
    Re-signed with Cowboys (1 year, $10.6 million)

Anthony Spencer dealt with consistency issues early in his career, but he was amazing for the Cowboys this past season, both in terms of stopping the run and getting to the quarterback.

  3. Michael Johnson, DE, Bengals. Age: 26.
    Franchised by Bengals

The sky's the limit for Michael Johnson, who turns 26 in February. He recorded 11.5 sacks in 2012 while playing the run very well. He's expected to be franchised.

  4. Michael Bennett, DE, Buccaneers. Age: 27.
Signed with Seahawks (1 year, $5 million)

One of the more underrated players in the NFL, Michael Bennett is a solid pass-rusher and a premier run-defender. He plays all three downs and deserves a big contract.

  5. Cliff Avril, DE, Lions. Age: 27.
    Signed with Seahawks

Cliff Avril is a relatively young, dynamic pass-rusher, but he tends to struggle in run support. He rejected a 3-year, $30 million deal last offseason.

  6. Dwight Freeney, DE, Colts. Age: 33.
    Signed with Chargers

Dwight Freeney didn't have a good 2012 campaign because he was bothered by an ankle injury and had to transition into a 3-4 for the first time in his career. He should be better on a team with a 4-3 defense next year.

  7. William Hayes, DE, Rams. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with Rams

William Hayes could start for some teams, but he can't crack the lineup in St. Louis because of Chris Long and Robert Quinn. He's terrific against the run and can get to the quarterback on occasion.

  8. Osi Umenyiora, DE, Giants. Age: 31.
    Signed with Falcons

Osi Umenyiora had some decent games this past season, but was mostly invisible. It's fair to wonder if Umenyiora's talents have eroded. He'll be 32 in November.

  9. John Abraham, DE, Falcons. Age: 35.
John Abraham still got the job done as a 34-year-old last season, registering a team-high 10 sacks. He was cut because of his $7.25 million cap number. He can still start, but it's fair to wonder how much he has left in the tank, given that he'll be 35 in May.

  10. Israel Idonije, DE, Bears. Age: 32.
    Signed with Lions (1 year)

Israel Idonije is coming off a fantastic season in terms of getting to the quarterback (7.5 sacks) and stopping the run. He'll be 33 in November, however.

  11. Junior Galette (RFA), DE, Saints. Age: 25.
    Re-signed with Saints (3 years)

Junior Galette is a solid situational pass-rusher who should have seen more action last year.

  12. Robert Geathers, DE, Bengals. Age: 30.
    Re-signed with Bengals

Robert Geathers did not play well this past season because of a lingering knee injury. He was still decent as a run-stopper.

  13. Wallace Gilberry, DE, Bengals. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with Bengals (3 years, $6.75 million)

Wallace Gilberry is a quality nickel pass-rusher. He recorded 6.5 sacks despite not playing very many snaps.

  14. Juqua Parker-Thomas, DE, Browns. Age: 35.
Juqua Parker-Thomas served as a decent situational pass-rusher for the Browns, registering six sacks. He'll be 35 in May, however.

  15. Kyle Moore, DE, Bills. Age: 26. -- Signed with Bears
  16. Lawrence Jackson, DE, Lions. Age: 28.
  17. Frostee Rucker, DE, Browns. Age: 29. -- Signed with Cardinals
  18. Kyle Vanden Bosch, DE, Lions. Age: 34.
  19. Matt Shaughnessy, DE, Raiders. Age: 26. -- Signed with Cardinals (1 year)
  20. Trevor Scott, DE, Patriots. Age: 29.
  21. Shawne Merriman, DE, Bills. Age: 29. -- Announced retirement
  22. Andre Carter, DE, Raiders. Age: 34. -- Re-signed with Raiders (1 year)
  23. Antwan Applewhite, DE/OLB, Panthers. Age: 27.
  24. George Selvie, DE, Jaguars. Age: 26. -- Signed with Buccaneers
  25. Willie Young (RFA), DE, Lions. Age: 27. -- Tendered by Lions (2nd round)
  26. Darryl Tapp, DE, Eagles. Age: 28. -- Signed with Redskins
  27. Jason Hunter, DE, Broncos. Age: 30. -- Signed with Raiders

  28. Lawrence Sidbury, DE, Falcons. Age: 27. -- Signed with Colts
  29. Jarvis Moss, DE, Raiders. Age: 29.
  30. Jarius Wynn, DE, Titans. Age: 27. -- Signed with Chargers
  31. Keyunta Dawson, DE, Titans. Age: 27.
  32. Turk McBride, DE, Saints. Age: 28. -- Signed with Bears
  33. Edgar Jones, DE/OLB, Chiefs. Age: 28. -- Re-signed with Chiefs
  34. Dave Tollefson, DE, Raiders. Age: 31.
  35. Dave Ball, DE, Titans. Age: 33.

Walter, you are the biggest horse's ass on line. You cannot even track you OWN comments. "any team should sell their soul to get Mario Williams". So one team (Buffalo) does EXACTLY what you suggest and you are too stupid to endorse your OWN suggestion! Anyone with a brain would at least read his OWN suggestions before mocking a team that follows them! So, either you are a know-nothing when making suggestions or a know nothing when evaluating moves. What a dork!

Mario Williams should go to a 4-3 front defense. He wont likely go back to Houston cause he seems to like the 4-3 front more. I see him in Atlanta or Seattle. I think if he is playing for the right reasons though he will go to Atlanta cause they r closer to Super Bowls then the Seahawks. Atlanta will be able to contend with the Saints with a beefed up Defense

Once in a blue moon, the Packers sign a good undervalued free agent such as Woodson or Pickett.

Robert Mathis!

Shaun Ellis should be higher on the list, he had a bad year with the Pats but remember how he played with the Jets?

Why isn't Calais Campbell on this list? Although Arizona is likely to place the franchise tag, nevertheless, he should still be on the list ranked # 2.

@trying to win a championship

When have the Pats ever thrown big money at a defensive free-agent? Belichek seems to prefer resurrecting other teams cheap cast offs.

The pats should resign Carter and Anderson and also sign Mario williams because Anderson can be used as both a DE and an OLB. This would help them quite a bit!

You say Jeremy Mincey came out of nowhere to register eight sacks. Did it ever occur to you that he was just playing cause of a contract year?

wow...from all bengal free agent reviews prior to this one and certainly not excluding this one, I believe it is fare to say that you didn't really tune into many bengals games. I like a lot of your analysis, and i'm on here twice a week, but I have to call you on these reviews too. Pretty trite Walt, or whichever names is yours.

Thanks for all the good content,

Nathan

The texans should let mario williams go. They already have a talented pass rush without him. Use the money to sign a big name wideout to compliment andre johmson and boost that already good offense. Desean or vincent Jackson..

Mario Williams will leave Texens and go to a team who will pay him 50 million or something like that.
