2012 Free Agency: Star rating is out of five. Age listing as of Sept. 1, 2012.
Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

  1. Drew Brees, QB, Saints. Age: 33.
    Franchised by Saints

Drew Brees just turned 33, but he's still going to be one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL for a few more years. He holds Dan Marino's record for most passing yards in a single season, but he'll need another Super Bowl ring to go down as one of the all-time greats. He'll be franchised.

  2. Peyton Manning, QB, Colts. Age: 36.
Signed with Broncos (5 years, $96 million)

It's still hard to believe that Peyton Manning is a free agent. Manning would be a five-star player if it weren't for his neck injury, so I'm docking him half a star. Knowing Manning though, it's hard to imagine him not playing like an All-Pro next year in an attempt to prove that he can still perform at the highest level.

  3. Matt Flynn, QB, Packers. Age: 27.
Signed with Seahawks (3 years, $26 million; $10 million guaranteed)

When Matt Flynn threw for 480 yards in a Week 17 win over the Lions, he passed for more yardage than any Packer quarterback in a single game. There's a limited sample size, but the potential is clearly there. Flynn will be a starter somewhere next season. It's also worth noting that Charley Casserly, the man who spent early picks on David Carr and Dave Ragone, doesn't think too highly of Flynn. This could very well mean that Flynn has Pro Bowl potential.

  4. Alex Smith, QB, 49ers. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with 49ers

Alex Smith threw for 3,150 yards, 17 touchdowns and only five interceptions in his first season under Jim Harbaugh. His two fourth-quarter drives against the Saints were a thing of beauty.

  5. Jason Campbell, QB, Raiders. Age: 30.
    Signed with Bears

Look up the definition of mediocre in the dictionary, and you'll probably find a picture of Jason Campbell. Campbell has been really consistent in his two years with the Raiders, completing about 60 percent of his passes and throwing slightly more touchdowns than interceptions.

  6. Brian Hoyer (RFA), QB, Patriots. Age: 26.
    Re-signed with Patriots (1 year, $1.92 million)

The Patriots like Brian Hoyer, and I do too. I'd like to see him get a chance to start somewhere in 2013. For now, he'll continue to back up the Golden Boy.

  7. Josh Johnson, QB, Buccaneers. Age: 26.
    Signed with 49ers (2 years)

Josh Johnson has some nice skills and the upside to potentially make some team believe that it can groom him into a starting quarterback.

  8. Kyle Orton, QB, Chiefs. Age: 29.
    Signed with Cowboys (3 years)

Kyle Orton has proven that he can be a solid game-manager when surrounded by a quality supporting cast. That's all he is though.

  9. Shaun Hill, QB, Lions. Age: 32.
    Re-signed with Lions (2 years)

Shaun Hill has proven himself as one of the top backup quarterbacks in the NFL.

  10. Dennis Dixon, QB, Steelers. Age: 27.
Dennis Dixon has some upside as a potential starter. He's a good backup, at the very least.

  11. Billy Volek, QB, Chargers. Age: 36.
I can't say I understand why the Chargers cut Billy Volek. He can still serve as a really reliable backup quarterback and passable spot-starter.

  12. Rex Grossman, QB, Redskins. Age: 32.
    Re-signed with Redskins (1 year)

Rex Grossman has proven himself as a capable backup quarterback, but he commits too many turnovers to be a starter.

  13. Chad Henne, QB, Dolphins. Age: 27.
    Signed with Jaguars (2 years)

Chad Henne has some solid physical tools, but it appears as if he'll never have the mental aspect of football down. Still, I'd like to see what he could do with some really good coaching.

  14. Josh McCown, QB, Bears. Age: 33.
    Re-signed with Bears (1 year)

Josh McCown was pretty impressive in two starts late in the year. He's a solid backup quarterback.

  15. Donovan McNabb, QB, Vikings. Age: 35.
Constantly overrated by the media, Donovan McNabb is fat and lazy. He's also a bad guy to have in the locker room because he throws teammates under the bus and seldom takes the blame. He could be a good backup quarterback if he were willing to accept the role. But his enormous ego will get in the way of that.

  16. David Garrard, QB, Jaguars. Age: 34.
    Signed with Dolphins (1 year)

David Garrard is an old quarterback with back problems. He can be a good backup and a decent spot starter, but no team should count on him to be under center very much in 2012.

  17. Drew Stanton, QB, Lions. Age: 28. -- Signed with Jets (1 year)
  18. Dan Orlovsky, QB, Colts. Age: 29. -- Signed with Buccaneers (2 years)
  19. Charlie Batch, QB, Steelers. Age: 37. -- Re-signed with Steelers (1 year)
  20. Vince Young, QB, Eagles. Age: 29. -- Signed with Bills (1 year, $2 million)
  21. Matt Leinart, QB, Texans. Age: 29. -- Signed with Raiders
  22. Byron Leftwich, QB, Steelers. Age: 32. -- Re-signed with Steelers
  23. Brady Quinn, QB, Broncos. Age: 27. -- Signed with Chiefs
  24. Chase Daniel (RFA), QB, Saints. Age: 25. -- Re-signed with Saints (1 year)
  25. Kellen Clemens, QB, Rams. Age: 29. -- Re-signed with Rams (1 year)
  26. Sage Rosenfels, QB, Vikings. Age: 34. -- Re-signed with Vikings (2 years)
  27. Troy Smith, QB, Steelers. Age: 28.
  28. A.J. Feeley, QB, Rams. Age: 35.
  29. Derek Anderson, QB, Panthers. Age: 29. -- Re-signed with Panthers (1 year)
  30. David Carr, QB, Giants. Age: 33. -- Re-signed with Giants
  31. Charlie "Whithart" Whitehurst, QB, Seahawks. Age: 30. -- Signed with Chargers
  32. J.P. Losman, QB, Dolphins. Age: 31.
  33. Kyle Boller, QB, Raiders. Age: 31. -- Announced retirement
  34. John Beck, QB, Redskins. Age: 31. -- Signed with Texans
  35. Luke McCown, QB, Jaguars. Age: 31. -- Signed with Saints
  36. Jake Delhomme, QB, Texans. Age: 37.
  37. Chris Redman, QB, Falcons. Age: 35. -- Re-signed with Falcons
  38. Mark Brunell, QB, Jets. Age: 41. -- Announced retirement
  39. Kerry Collins, QB, Colts. Age: 39.
  40. Kevin O'Connell, QB, Jets. Age: 27.
  41. Caleb Hanie, QB, Bears. Age: 27. -- Signed with Broncos
  42. Curtis Painter, QB, Colts. Age: 27. -- Signed with Ravens
  43. Max Hall, QB, Cardinals. Age: 26.

Chris Redman is a perfectly good backup! He may be a little old, but his throws are extremely on target. He only lacks downfield strength, and even that's not a major problem

Player F
Backup QB with 2 career starts. 480 yards week 17 vs Lions, nearly beat the mighty Patriots in his other career NFL start.

Player G
Age 31
13-13 record 50%
194 yards per game
39 TD 23 INT
17 fumbles

Key: Henne, Campbell, Orton, Young, Grossman, Flynn, Hill.

Chad Henne has very similar stats to Jason Campbell and he's 4 years younger, doesn't have a chronic fumbling problem, has a stronger arm and more upside due to his age. Now I don't like either player, or either player's slow release but it goes to show how overrated Jason Campbell is when you factor in his fumbles which don't show up in QB rating. FYI he's my last choice of the list.

Jason Campbell is awful in the 2 min drill, shows no leadership, and never plays well against a good defense. He's an ultra conservative game manager that gets sacked and fumbles too much.

Brees was tagged with the exclusive franchise tag and therefore cannot be signed away by another team.

If the Redskins gave up 3 1st rounders and a 2nd for RG3 then why aren't teams trying to sign the franchised Drew Brees for 2 1st rounders.

Miami was the original wild cat team and even wasted a 2nd round pick on chicken legs Pat White lol. People initially thought Tebow would go to Miami or New England before Denver picked him.

Jacksonville is closer to Gainesville and the Jags can play Tebow now and let Gabbart sit and learn.

Say Manning signs with Denver. That means Tebow is expendable and that Miami is still in need of a QB. With the "star power" and Florida ties that Tebow possesses he may very well become a Dolphin for the 2012-2013 NFL season.

I'm surprised Ozzie and the Ravens don't go after Manning, why not? Are you that committed to Flacco? If you sign Manning and draft reasonably well you are the AFC favorite for the next 3 to 5 years. Assuming Manning is fully recovered I think he can play longer than most people think if he wants to. So do you really want to keep Flacco long term? How many more years will Flacco be a Raven ?

Peyton Manning will be great for Miami. It will finally give NE a competition in the AFC east. Especially, if they sign R. Wayne so Manning will have more targets. If Miami signs either player the only thing keeping them from the playoffs is if Marshall or Bush gets hurt from being on the cover of Madden 13.

Kyle Orton didn't have a lot of talent in Chicago but he played conservative and did alright and won games. Under Josh Mcdaniels in Denver he was given more freedom to be more aggressive he put up some numbers. I don't see how Jason Campbell can be ranked higher. One of the main reasons why Jay Cutler went to Chicago instead of Washington is because they liked Orton in the trade deal with Chicago more than Campbell and Washington's package. Campbell is an ultra conservative game manager with a slow release, poor pocket awareness and a propensity to throw 4 yard checkdowns on 3rd and 10 and lose death of 1,000 cuts. Most QB's aren't like that but make no mistake, he's not a very good player and he doesn't deserve to be a starter.

Shaun Hill is a really good backup QB. I don't see how Hoyer and Josh Johnson can be ranked higher as they've proven exactly nothing.

Rex Grossman would actually be a very good backup QB who can throw for 300 yards in a spot start, he just makes too many mistakes to be a starter.

Vince Young should also be ranked higher on the list. If he could settle down and become committed to a team he's probably the 3rd best guy on your list. If a coach like Harbaugh could make him "the guy" and build the team around him he could do what Alex Smith did this year but better.

A little bit surprised that my Packers didn't Franchise QB Matt Flynn, thus allowing GM Ted Thompson to trade him for a couple of draft picks. However, when one stops to think about it for a moment, not putting the tag of Flynn makes a fair amount of sense.

By not putting the tag on Flynn I have to believe that the ultra tip-lipped Thompson must've known something that, we, the average fan does not. Simply put, he probably knew days or even a couple of weeks in advance that the Colts were going to release QB Peyton Manning, thus taking away one more possible trade partner.

I belive my theory holds water for two reasons. 1) According to ESPN the two real legitimate franchises that appear to be interested in Flynn are Miami and Cleveland. However, again, according to ESPN, the Dolphins first choice would be Manning, thus putting Flynn (Green Bay had he been franchised.) in a wait and see mode. 2) According to the report the Washington Redskins and New York Jets are not interested in Flynn. Thus leaving the Browns, possibly Arizona and maybe, although highly unlikely, Jacksonville as possible trade partners.

I think Thompson was well aware of this and didn't want to take the chance of having to pay a back-up QB "franchise QB" type money.

Not always a fan of Thompson, but for this one, I think he was 100% correct with his lack of in-action.
